BOX OFFICE: Disappointing $28.7 Million Opening Weekend For THE EXPENDABLES 2

The follow-up to the 2010 film has arrived, but it seems that this sequel had a hard time at the box office this weekend. The Simon West-directed action film made less than the first film, according to official estimates. Check it out...

Despite better reviews and bigger cast, The Expendables 2 grossed $28.7 million in its opening weekend according to official estimates (via That is 17% less than the first film back in 2010 ($34.8 million). Many predicted that The Expendables 2 will most definitely make more than the first chapter in the first weekend. The film received an "A-" CinemaScore, which should result in a good word-of-mouth. It will be interesting to see the numbers for next weekend.

Meanwhile, The Bourne Legacy continued its solid run with another $17.0 million, and the total is now $69.6 million. The Dark Knight Rises made $11.1 million, and it also passed the $400 million mark, which means that the film now stands at $409.9 million. It is now #12 film of all-time domestically.

Maybe it'll have legs, hopefully? The movie was too much fun to get buried at the box office.
NerdyGeek - 8/19/2012, 8:43 AM

Nuff' Said
Maximus101 - 8/19/2012, 8:48 AM
The expendables was awesome fun lol
LAXtremest - 8/19/2012, 8:57 AM
I went Friday night and the theater wasn't packed at all. Hopefully this doesn't affect the third one.
P90 - 8/19/2012, 9:00 AM
The problem is that it is much worse than the first one. The first one was a dumb action movie but it still took itself (mostly) seriously. This one was SO corny and SO self aware it was painful to watch. None of the characters besides Sly had anything to do besides spout bizarre lines and shoot people. The worst thing though was Chuck Norris reciting one of those awful "Chuck Norris Facts" that were so popular eons ago.
number10 - 8/19/2012, 9:04 AM
great fun!! just action porn!
datNAMEtho - 8/19/2012, 9:06 AM
So bad.
batfan175 - 8/19/2012, 9:07 AM
well, i've heard from a lot of people that this is a realy bad film so it's probably gonna meet in the middle 'cause nothing about this film lets me think that anyone gave a shit about anything while making the film.
WildCard12 - 8/19/2012, 9:07 AM
I guess people just don't appreciate an old school style action flick with some of the badass action stars on the planet. Can't wait to see this one.

MisterFixit - 8/19/2012, 9:08 AM
we are seeing the term "disappointing" every week
dreddhead123 - 8/19/2012, 9:13 AM
I don't think this bodes well for Dredd 3D. That's R rated too. I'm guessing a 20 million or less box office opening for Dredd.

And Sylvester Stallone played Judge Dredd in 1995. :)

figuresmaniac - 8/19/2012, 9:16 AM
The general audiences are more into CBMs now. :p
Everything else is failing
bagadoosh - 8/19/2012, 9:16 AM

yeah I'm concerned also for Dredd , they want 35 mil to make a sequel , not sure it's gonna make it
BackwardGalaxy - 8/19/2012, 9:17 AM
Ugh. Grammar is dead.
dreddhead123 - 8/19/2012, 9:22 AM
I just read the full item. Exp 2 has made less money in its three day opening than the first one did in its opening. Wow - that's surprising. Would have thought the fanbase from the first movie would have got a few more people interested in seeing the sequel.

Perhaps the other problem is 'age'. Younger movie goers may not want to see 50 - 60 year old actors being tough. They may find it harder to relate to old action stars. I can't imagine the Twilight/Hunger Games/Spider-man teens getting excited by seeing Stallone and the rest of the crew.
Ranger14 - 8/19/2012, 9:35 AM
This doesn't surprise me. I grew up watching and loving these action stars from when they first started, but would never shell out the money to see this film in the theaters. I don't think it is just the younger generation who doesn't care.

"The film received an "A-" CinemaScore, which should result in a good word-of-mouth."

Average Joe Q. Public hasn't even heard of Cinemascore, so I doubt that will have any affect on anything other than word of mouth between film geeks who might check out Cinemascore. Other review sites haven't been too kind overall on the film. 5.8 out of 10 on RT for the average rating so far.

marvel72 - 8/19/2012, 9:45 AM
i wouldn't worry too much about dredd, its got budget of $45,000,000 & its in 3d as well.

if grosses $150-$200,000,000 worldwide i would consider that a hit considering what it cost to make.

angus666 - 8/19/2012, 9:46 AM
Can't believe we live in a world where 28 million is disappointing.
BooYah - 8/19/2012, 9:50 AM
Maybe these movies will continue with direct to video flicks.
SandMan101 - 8/19/2012, 9:56 AM
I posted an article saying this was going to happen 2 days ago lol. There was a nationwide bomb scare on friday for showings of expendables 2. Caused a lot of panic.
Bread - 8/19/2012, 10:14 AM
This movie was great, I advise all fans of bloody action movies to go see it, also, of you're an Arnold fan then this is a moie for you be ausd he actually has a role in this movie and a decent amount of screen time
TicklerMan - 8/19/2012, 10:18 AM
Meh, I'll wait for FX.
jessepostal - 8/19/2012, 10:24 AM
I think that the main fans of these movies, the people that grew up with these actors and this genre of action now have kids and jobs and can't exactly rush out to see this movie opening weekend, there are more important things. It'll def make its bank though give it time, one rainy day and 3000 construction and iron workers will pack the theatres
TheAbomination - 8/19/2012, 10:26 AM
Not something I want to watch in theaters. Let me know when the DVD is released.
LAXtremest - 8/19/2012, 10:35 AM
I didn't even hear about the bomb scare.
LAXtremest - 8/19/2012, 10:37 AM
I thought this movie was awesome. It gave me and my buddies exactly what we wanted. And the showdown between Sly and Guile at the end was intense.
LAXtremest - 8/19/2012, 10:51 AM
That's the longest statement I've ever seen from Grif.
clag - 8/19/2012, 10:52 AM
i thought it would get at least 35 mil

tonytony - 8/19/2012, 10:53 AM
didnt get chance to see the expendables 2 yet. But I will. Dark knight returns carries on doing well for CBM's
Jer3miah - 8/19/2012, 10:56 AM
@blackandyellow: LMAOOO!
Jer3miah Approves!, D'uh...
TheDetectiveComicRises - 8/19/2012, 11:12 AM
Considering the fact that the movie is rated R this is not dissapointing. Many of Stallone movies have opened this way & gone on to be huge successes. People must realize that every movie will not make the numbers The Dark Knight Rises & The Avengers make I think the film industry has gotten spoiled in people thinking that way I enjoyed the Expendables it had the best action & humor so far out of summer movies & I am also glad to see TDKR still performing well.
Ceejay - 8/19/2012, 11:13 AM
@angus666 - $28 million is hugely disappointing if you spent over $100 million making the film, which these idiots did!

I'd watch films this dumb but I wouldn't pay real money to see them especially if it stars people who's acting ability is baseline like Arnold and Van Damme. Only fanboys kept these guys in any level of spotlight, the rest of the rational thinking public stopped finding these monotone idiots entertaining a long time ago.
AsianVersionOfET - 8/19/2012, 11:15 AM
I'd rather see TDKR a fourth time than spend my money on this.
Equivocal - 8/19/2012, 11:19 AM
anyone knows the result of The Avengers in Japan ?

I'm sure wasn't #1 due to piracy and that it came out way too late but still intested to know the results....
tonytony - 8/19/2012, 11:24 AM
i think the expendables should be doing better. im sure it will go on to be big hit.
tonytony - 8/19/2012, 11:27 AM
also good on batman for overtaking the hunger games. It must be close to 900 mil by now.
eleven59 - 8/19/2012, 11:36 AM
It was a fun over the top action flick. Nothing wrong with that. My new measure of a movie is if it has a better score on the RT (rotten transformers) meter, and it does
Mego - 8/19/2012, 11:56 AM
Haven't seen the film and I think if its great word of mouth may give it a good solid 1st week and a better second weekend that #1 had.

But, when I look at the Expendables pic above, I have to wonder if Expendables would be better if all those actor's characters, were not on the same side.
Is Expendables better and more interesting with an 80's action hero team up, or would it be better with an 80's action hero battle royal?
Imagine a film were Stallone fights Arnold and Norris Vs. Van Damme.
And Stallone needs to put his ego aside and stop trying to assert himself above the rest. He's not a bigger actor than Willis or Schwarzenegger, except maybe in his own mind, and it seems obvious that part of his reason for doing these films is to say he was the biggest star among these guys.
Why should Stallone fight Van Damme at the end? Why not Norris?
