BOX OFFICE: SKYFALL Opens With $5.5 Million In Japan; Worldwide Cume Nears $900 Million

With The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on the way, Bond fever is beginning to wear off, but the Sam Mendes helmed Skyfall is still performing well at the box office. Hit the jump for details on its opening in Japan and the current worldwide cume.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Skyfall has opened to an impressive, but not record breaking, $5.5 million in Japan. Taking the #1 spot during its opening weekend, upwards of 400,000 moviegoers flocked to see the critically acclaimed film, resulting in a two-day total of 455 million yen. That's 69% more than Casino Royale and 49% ahead of Quantum of Solace, though both of those finished their runs with around $27 million. The latest instalment in the James Bond franchise opened on 584 screens (355 showing the subtitled version, 229 the dubbed one). Worldwide, Skyfall has now made $869 million, and several analysts are predicting that it will have surpassed $950 million by the time it is released in China next year. Will this be the first billion dollar Bond?

Daniel Craig is back as Ian Fleming’s James Bond 007 in SKYFALL™, the 23rd adventure in the longest-running film franchise of all time. In SKYFALL, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. The film is from Albert R. Broccoli’s EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Directed by Sam Mendes. Produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. Written by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade and John Logan.

That's 69% more than Casino Royale

Giggled at the number xD

Skyfall deserves it as it is a brilliant Bond film, the best modern one they have done in a long time.

It deserves to hit that number and potentially could, but it's going to be very close. What with Twilight also out and Lincoln too, with The Hobbit opening soon, it's definitely going to be hard for it to hit 1 Billion, but certainly not impossible. I'd never have guessed it'd make even around the 900 million mark, I expected between 750-800.

Glad it's doing so well! Only Bond film, besides Casino, that I really enjoyed, just can't seem to get into the older ones.

Yeah this will be the first $1 Billion Bond!

No countdown to destruction, no destructive cold fusion device that can destroy cities, no stolen nuke, no threat of WW3 and yet people enjoy the very personal drama in the film more than any Bond in decades.
That is something that filmmakers will HOPEFULLY take notice of.
How many studios like WB and producers like Jon Peters would have said we've got to have a global threat, we've got to have explosions and a giant spider and a super hot star as a Bond girl?

This films success should be a bigger deal than just being a successful Bond. It really disproves the big studio beliefs and formulas.

well its at 870 million now, it'll make at least 40 million more in the US and 30 more in Japan thats already 940 million without China and the remaining weeks from all the other territores

its a dead cert billion dollar bond!!

In my opinion, all the best Bond films are all the personal stories, GOLDENEYE (best friend and #1 agent gone rogue), SKYFALL (killed the boss), ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE (killed wife on wedding day), LICENSE TO KILL (f#cked up Felix on his wedding day), not necessarily in that order, but those are definitly in my top 5, followed by SPY WHO LOVES ME, CASINO ROYALE, GOLDFINGER.

@TheYoungMan Note: I said films success is more than just being a successful Bond, Quantum in 2008 (if thats what youre talking about) did $586,090,727 Worldwide. Nice numbers but not the kind that surprise people.

Casino Royale was 6 years ago with Worldwide: $599,045,960 great numbers and the film got great reviews. But the numbers were still not the kind that turns Studio heads like Skyfall will when it breaks a Billion and the great reviews werent as high as Skyfalls.

If youre referring to a non-Bond film I have no idea what film youre referring to.

But as I said, the films success, that will be over 1 billion WW, without global threats and Doomsday countdowns and other Hollywood trimmings is a big deal.

holy shit if this makes 1 billion I'm impressed :0
Mego - 12/3/2012, 9:06 AM
@TheYoungMan No, because the film youre referring to did have the element of the entire city under siege thing and the cell phone sonar thing. And though Mendes cited it's style as some sort of influence, that film went for the Grand Scale thing. Skyfall's tone was less grand but very effective. So it was more a film that some studios and producers would never make.
The other with the Entire City being threatened and with a countdown to destruction would be more in line with Hollywood.
Skyfall was a bit more Anti-Hollywood style. A bit more personal and intimate. No threat of mass murder or mass destruction that we see in every other action film.

Bond owes it's box office to Mendes and Craig. Period.

Well deserved! Skyfall was a great Bond film & I hope it does reach the $1 billion mark.

Either way, I am just happy to watch it over and over again. Bond are supposed to be released every two years now, so the more it makes the better it is for the franchise. 50 yrs and still going strong!
