Gladiator: Reasons it should still be mentioned to this day

Gladiator: Reasons it should still be mentioned to this day

I know this isn't a comicbook film but bare with me.

It's been itching at me to make this article. I'm so disappointed in my generation and their "taste" in films. While yes, I got not a lot of room to talk because I do like, "Dude, where's my car". It's more of a guilty pleasure than anything. My problem with my generation is at 16 (will be 17 tomorrow), almost no one my age has ever heard of Gladiator. It's ridiculous. I ask them why. I'll get responses like "I never heard of it" or "My parents thought it was stupid, so I never watched it". But, the response is mostly the first one. To be honest, I want to punch them in the face for it. It's not cause Gladiator is one of my all time favorite films. But, it's because they have never heard of such a great movie. It saddens me alot. This is five reasons why, Gladiator, is a film that should be mentioned to this day.

5: It's simply put, a gorgeous film.

I love the look of the film. I don't mean the setting, I mean the sheer look of the film. Particularly the cinematography. It's simply gorgeous. It really puts you in those times and it helps make it such an engrossing film despite it's length.

4: It's Ridley Scott.

The heading alone says it all. It's Ridley Scott. If someone asks who, just bring up the following: Alien, Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down, Robin Hood and Prometheus. It should ring a bell in their head. Especially the last two, if you're asking someone my age. Not to mention, people my age do like the Academy Awards. So, bring up the fact that it was nominated for five academy awards and one of the wins included Best Picture.

3: It's a true epic

When people think of epic these days, they think of big fight scenes. They think of the final battle in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 (which, I found the film to be a epic), the Transformers films, ect. They don't seem to understand what an epic is. I don't need to describe what an epic is because Gladiator is a film that is a true epic. It resurrected historical epics.

2: It's got real acting

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of movies with good acting in them. But, I think this has amazing acting. I mean, it does have an impressive ensemble. Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Richard Harris (R.I.P), Dijmon Hounsou, ect. I think Crowe and Phoenix are the standouts. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't know who they are with the exception of Russell Crowe. Well, unless you ask people my age who he is. They'll probably tell you "I don't know"..... god my generation sucks.

1: It actually has a good plot

A lot of films these days have either a plot that is okay, cliche or just flat out unappealing. Nothing is original anymore either. Gladiator is original and has a VERY good plot. A general who became a salve, a slave who became a gladiator, a gladiator who defied an empire. It's pretty simple and interesting. The sad part being that it's only one of the films taglines and it's main one at that. Not a lot of films have even a good tagline. If you don't have a good story, it will never be a good film. This one has a great story and is a fantastic film.

This being said, I'm overly disappointed in my generations lack of what makes a good film and they're lack of knowledge that this film even exists. What do you think? Should Gladiator be a film that people mention still to this day or be a film better forgotten? Comment below and be respectful please.

Is this film really in need of some love? Has it already been lost to a generation???

Find that very hard to believe.

That would be like saying that my generation have never heard of Jaws, The Godfather or Star Wars!
EdgyOutsider - 12/20/2012, 6:05 AM
Orphix: I kid you not. I have found at most 3 people (personally) who have heard of Gladiator. Hell, I even have a hard time finding teenagers on the Internet who have heard of the film. If you bring up this sort of film to them, they'll think of 300 which isn't a good movie at all.
EdgyOutsider - 12/20/2012, 6:51 AM
LEVITIKUZ: People my age, teenagers. I find it truly sad. I was four or five when I first watched Gladiator and have loved it ever since and is not only my one of my favorites but I feel one of the best movies ever. I feel ashamed that my generation don't know a good film when they see it. They're into Twilight, Hunger Games and other movies that are adaptations. I think that people, especially kids and teenagers should watch movies that are original and excellent, fantastic, ect. So they have a sense of true cinema.

Have they heard of The Matrix?

Came out at about the same time I think?
EdgyOutsider - 12/20/2012, 7:27 AM
Probably but, to be honest with you, it's not saying alot.
EdgyOutsider - 12/20/2012, 8:20 AM
I think Gladiator is a fantastic movie, clearly lol It won 5 academy awards including Best Picture. The way I look at it, if kids my age (16-17) have heard of Spaceballs which is older than Gladiator, they have no excuse for never hearing about or seeing Gladiator.

This is my favorite movie, I'm a huge cbm fan, but this will always be no 1 for me. Since the new mos trailer, i listen to "now we are free" every day, i also hope the new man of steel will have inspiration from gladiator since we have russel crowe and hans zimmer on it
BlazinTexan - 12/20/2012, 11:28 AM
Came out when I was in 9th grade I loved it then and still love it today at 28. Btw I also love the 13th warrior and so many people have never seen that movie either.
BlazinTexan - 12/20/2012, 11:29 AM
I know a kid that goes to film school that has never seen citizen kane or starwars. Which blows my mind.
Hellsing - 12/20/2012, 2:09 PM
you also forgot to mention that it was the last time we would see a healthy looking Russell Crowe because boy did the mother [frick]er let him self go after this movie.
Hellsing - 12/20/2012, 2:11 PM
And yeah awesome movie just because 3 people don't know what Gladiators is does not mean that the movie isn't loved. Plus the older you grow the more your taste change in film and pretty much every thing. Hell I don't think I ever watched an indie film until I was about 20.
EdgyOutsider - 12/20/2012, 2:17 PM
Hellsing: 3 people I know personally. I've seen even teenagers on the internet who never heard of it.

Couldn't agree with you more Nick.

I too, get pretty sad when kids my age haven't heard of great movies like this. I'm like you in that I feel like I have better taste in movies than most kids my age. One of my favorite movies ever is The Patriot (which came out the same year as Gladiator I believe) and most kids my age haven't heard of it. Same with Braveheart, The Last Samurai, old action flicks from the 80s and 90s and a bunch of other movies that I love. Makes me sad. But I do agree with Hellsing about your taste in movies changing over time. It's just some of us grow up a bit quicker ;)

I am a senior in high school and I absolutely love this movie so I am one young person who you can say loves this movie. I hate it when people say they haven't seen classic films like Star Wars, the Godfather,Jaws, Blade Runner (that one especially gets little recognition.), or what not. Young people these days are a very depraved bunch of people who need some culture.
LoudNoises - 12/20/2012, 5:26 PM
I think I can quote this movie line for line. Great movie to watch when your busy with a project and your not even watching it, lol. I still get chills every time I hear Maximus say...

"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius, father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."
EdgyOutsider - 12/20/2012, 7:33 PM
Splenda: Unfortunately, I have a family member who doesn't like it. Which for my family, is shocking cause we haven't been known to not like good movies. But, my great aunt has never liked Gladiator nor Russell Crowe. Ah well, her loss :)
nowtheresaBATman - 12/20/2012, 8:54 PM
Three weeks from now, I will be harvesting my crops. Imagine where you will be, and it will be so. Hold the line! Stay with me! If you find yourself alone, riding in the green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and you're already dead!
nowtheresaBATman - 12/20/2012, 8:56 PM
& yet another gem: Those giraffes you sold me, they won't mate. They just walk around, eating, and not mating. You sold me... queer giraffes. I want my money back.
Proximo lol
