Josh Wilding Reviews: BULLET TO THE HEAD

Josh Wilding Reviews: BULLET TO THE HEAD

You've read my review of The Last Stand (find it HERE if you missed it), but how does director Walter Hill and star Sylvester Stallone's Bullet to the Head - based on based on Alexis Nolent's French graphic novel - match up? Hit the jump for my spoiler-free verdict!

Perhaps the biggest problem with Bullet to the Head is the fact that not a single character in the movie is even remotely likeable. 'James Bonomo' (Sylvester Stallone) is a hitman who sets out to avenge the death of his partner, and while he may be a cold blooded killer, Alessandro Camon's mediocre screenplay doesn't even attempt to give him any sort of depth or personality. Of course, the fact that Sylvester Stallone is such a dull and hard to believe presence on screen doesn't exactly help matters. Regardless of whether he's mumbling through his lines or shooting off one-liners that miss the mark time and again, this is a role he would have perhaps been better suited to taking on 20 or 30 years ago. Unlike Arnold Schwarzenegger's recent to the action genre in The Last Stand, this just does NOT work.

Unfortunately, Sung Kang's 'Taylor Kwon' - a clichéd do-gooder cop who ends up finding himself forced to work with the hitman - also doesn't get anywhere near enough in the way of decent material to make a difference and instead ends up as the butt of far, far too many borderline and outright racist jokes. The cast is filled out with forgettable performances from the likes of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje ('Robert Nkomo Morel') and Christian Slater ('Marcus Baptiste'), although Sarah Shahi's 'Lisa Bonomo' does a good enough job that it will make you want to see her get the opportunity to take on bigger roles in the near future. Jason Momoa, perhaps best known for playing 'Conan' in an ill-fated reboot from a couple of years ago, is fine as 'Keegan'. However, he brings nothing of any note to this role and it could have easily been filled by pretty much any muscle bound actor.

Director Walter Hill's last film was 2002's Undisputed and Bullet to the Head is enough to make you wish that he had stayed in the world of television (where he actually did some great work on the likes of Deadwood). He fails to get any decent performances from his cast and delivers no remarkable visuals or action sequences which manage to make up for that. Admittedly, the final fight between Stallone and Momoa is good, but comes far too late to make any real difference. However, despite all of this, the film is still...watchable. Bullet to the Head is basically the kind of movie that you might flick on one night at home and enjoy, but it's hard to recommend making the effort to check it out at the cinema.

Bullet to the Head is direct-to-DVD drivel which is by no means terrible, although still certainly not the best way to spend 90 minutes when there are much better movies worth watching. It may be time to step out of the ring Sly...

In the film, a hitman teams with a young NYPD detective in a high-stakes investigation that leads from dingy back alleys all the way to the power corridors of New Orleans. The unlikely duo, brought together by two vicious murders, take on all who stand in their way, willing to sacrifice everything to exact revenge.

Another Red box night when the in-laws are in.

1 star?!?! Maybe I will stay away from this one...
JoshWilding - 2/3/2013, 8:03 AM
If you're a big Stallone fan, you could MAYBE add another star to that score. I mean, it's watchable, but just doesn't deserve a higher rating than this IMO. I would only recommend it to someone if they've seen literally everything else out at the moment and are bored...that's why I saw it! :P

I'm not going to say a mask would've added two stars to your score, but some people are thinking it. No review Movie 43 since it has that superhero short.
MisterBabadook - 2/3/2013, 8:39 AM
I should say NOW review Movie 43
fedup - 2/3/2013, 8:54 AM
Man...what happened to Walter Hill? I mean The Warriors, Last Man Standing, Streets of Fire...sure (with the exception of the Warriors) those weren't hits but his films always at least had personality to them but this flick looks absolutely soulless.
jazzman - 2/3/2013, 8:56 AM
a friend of mine told me this movie was rubbish. it look like its been confirmed by this review lol
jazzman - 2/3/2013, 8:57 AM

Gary8264 - 2/3/2013, 9:12 AM
I Loved BTTH, it was an old style action flick. Maybe It's outdated, and I guess so am I, but I'd rather see this type of action flick then a lotta the new stuff out now.... and can't wait to see the newest Die Hard and Red 2. If you want action, a mean bad guy, a not so good good guy, then this is for you. Before you write it off give it a chance.
marvel72 - 2/3/2013, 9:16 AM
looks crap sounds crap its probably crap.
Rheynger - 2/3/2013, 10:37 AM
This review is shit. Everybody needs to quit going by other people's half assed opinions and judge for themselves. When I went to see it yesterday, everybody in the theatre liked it. Stallone is still a great action star. Old or young. All of you younger yuppies need to get out of the basement and form you own opinions.
geeekgod - 2/3/2013, 11:16 AM
so this doesn't work but the crappy Last Stand does? it looks like totsl shit
Mmasoldier - 2/3/2013, 12:13 PM
This whole review. Is weak at best that movie should have at least three and a half stars. Racist jokes? They were humor full and weren't to be rude and sung kang even joked back with sly on the Italian taco. The only part I agreed with you on was sung kang was terrible in this movie but besides that it was the best movie next to Parker that's out right now. I bet your a twilight fan too. Please someone write a review that actually knows a good action movie.
DioFoRio - 2/3/2013, 12:17 PM
In the trailer and commercials , the lighting looks like a BAD soap opera. I'll wait till TBS. I think Stallone and Sly are forgetting that action is good with a script to back it up.
DioFoRio - 2/3/2013, 12:19 PM see OVERRoid get KTFO last night? beautiful : )
Mmasoldier - 2/3/2013, 12:24 PM
^^^^^^@ chancellorcocnutdio..... Yes, I did. That' was a combo silva caught him with. Overeem looked way smaller then when he fought Brock. That takedown he landed was nice though. I was hoping Frankie would pull out over Aldo but Aldo was taking it to him early. Stacked card though big time. I watched right after I saw bullet to the head. Bullet to the head is much better then this writer says.
beane2099 - 2/3/2013, 12:41 PM
"dull and hard to believe" isn't what I'D use to describe Sly. I agree that it wasn't the best of his movies, but I liked it. And the primary reason I liked it was Sly's dialogue. Also, Kang and Stallone traded barbs throughout the movie. It wasn't one sided. I'd give it 2 1/2 - 3 stars.
LAXtremest - 2/3/2013, 1:20 PM
Although this movie was not that good, I felt it was better then The Last Stand, which was horrible.
SkateandDestroy88 - 2/3/2013, 2:06 PM
I'm poor but was pretty shocked when I read that Bigfoot got the TKO. Reem was talking mad trash about him and now Silva even though got smashed by Cain V has wins over the Reem and Mighty mighty Fedor.

I spend money only on CBM at bow office. Not even mildy interested in seeing a Sly or Arnold movie, unless maybe w in law or something and for nostalgic value.
SkateandDestroy88 - 2/3/2013, 2:08 PM
But I will probably try to look at some naked pictures of that lady cause she looks hot and what better use for the internet than looking at naked pictures of sexy celebrities . . .
DioFoRio - 2/3/2013, 2:53 PM
@MMAsoldier Yeah the Aldo Edgar fight was awesome. Lil Nog and Rashad...What the hell was up with Rashad? He came out flat footed as fug. So it is a good flick?Straight up dumb fun or serious? worth seeing at a matinee or full price?
DioFoRio - 2/3/2013, 2:58 PM
@Skate.. Dude. Seriously, when he called Silva nothing "but a number, a statistic"...He shoulda focused more on keeping his hands up. Silva came out like a beast. And yeah Reem looked less yoked then his last fight. What's up with Fedor now? Still with that Russian Mob Manager?lol. I wish they would have came to an agreement to have him fight in the UFC when they were in talks a while back.
DioFoRio - 2/3/2013, 3:00 PM
Fedor was a beast back in the day. Pride... I miss the Japanese shows.
Nivekian - 2/3/2013, 3:51 PM
Getting tired of some of these reviews.
Tevii - 2/3/2013, 3:55 PM
Stallone and Momoa did great in this movie... But other than that it wasn't very good. The script sucked, the director needed to be replaced and Sung Kang had no stage presence or charisma at all... It would've been better to keep Thomas Jane in the role for that character
MrZoolittle - 2/3/2013, 4:12 PM
Went with my dad to see it today (his idea) it was bad. Laughable at some points. The dialog was so bad my ears were bleeding.
SkateandDestroy88 - 2/3/2013, 7:58 PM
Chancellor at least we get to watch Anderson Silva. I'm a fan. big time. Pride was boss
Mmasoldier - 2/3/2013, 10:27 PM
@ you train at all or compete?
yinyangpalms - 2/4/2013, 6:04 AM
These 80's old guys are tankin hard at the box office. This is 3 films Expendables 2, Last Stand and Bullet that have flopped.
Whats worse for Arnold and Sly is theyve lost their overseas drawing power too.
If Die Hard 5 falters then every film for these guys not filming, could be cancelled, including Arnold's Conan sequel.
Studios will simply not invest in them much longer.
