POWER RANGERS Reboot Gets A Release Date And Synopsis

POWER RANGERS Reboot Gets A Release Date And Synopsis

The news that the Power Rangers franchise is being rebooted was met with a mixed response, with many wondering whether there's room for the fairly dated characters in a world with the likes of The Avengers and Batman v Superman. Well, despite all that, it now has a release date...

Since Mighty Morphin Power Rangers launched over two decades ago, the series has been in almost continuous production, with merchandise still selling well and a loyal fanbase in place. However, they no longer have anywhere near the same level of popularity, but a movie like this however could potentially move them right back into being the huge brand they used to be. That's what Lionsgate are banking on anyway, as they have now set a release date of July 22nd, 2016. It was recently revealed that Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (who are credited somewhat controversially for X-Men: First Class) will pen the movie based on a story by Transformers' Roberto Orci. July 2016 is a busy month, with new Bourne and Planet of the Apes movies set to open alongside Angry Birds, Ice Age 5, The BFG and more. What do you guys think?

From a story by Executive Producer Roberto Orci (TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2) and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, THOR) comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.

so now we know when it's morphin time

If they choose Michael Bay as director I'm gonna [frick]ing kill everyone at Lionsgate.

Power Rangers are my favorite superheroes ever (yeah, they made my childhood awesome even though they've always been dorky as hell) so I'd get really really mad if they receive the Transformers/Ninja Turtles treatment.

Matthew Vaughn would be perfect though. The tone that he gave X-men: First Class would really fit a Power Rangers big screen reboot.
AgentZero - 8/13/2014, 3:08 PM
They better have a joke about exploding grass in that movie.

AgentZero - 8/13/2014, 3:10 PM
I'm waiting on the "destroy my childhood" comments and stuff.

Power Rangers was cheesy as [frick] just like the original TMNT cartoon and the G1 transformers. So anything they do would be an improvement
DCGuy - 8/13/2014, 3:13 PM
oh my goodness.
ALegendaryPanda - 8/13/2014, 3:13 PM
Wow! 2016 is [frick]ing packed!
Pasto - 8/13/2014, 3:14 PM
Maisie Williams for the role of the pink Power Ranger.
KingPatel - 8/13/2014, 3:15 PM
This was my childhood, so I'm really looking forward to this. Not a bad release date, 2 weeks after a Marvel film and 2 weeks before a DC film. Hopefully it's a good film.
ALegendaryPanda - 8/13/2014, 3:15 PM
I'm actually somewhat looking forward to seeing how they handle this. One thing is for sure though, those ridiculous outfits gotta go!

@AgentZero Power Rangers RPM had plenty of jokes about the cheesiness of the show. Exploding grass, forced one liners and more.

And by the way, I'm okay for them to improve on the cheesiness, just don't do it in such a horrible way (which probably makes it worse and dull) like the new TMNT film.

Not a coincidence that POWER RANGERS gets a release date a few days after the monster NINJA TURTLES opening.

Thundered - 8/13/2014, 3:35 PM
Can power rangers survive? They're "dated?" In a world with THE AVENGERS it's an understandable question. However, the real question is: can the even MORE DATED superman and batman even stay relevant in that same world????
TheRationalNerd - 8/13/2014, 3:36 PM

This is seriously the one franchise that Michael Bay would be perfect to direct... the freaken grass would explode. The cheesiness, then nostalgia factor and the bad dialogue they are all perfect for Michael Bay this is the one series that does not need to be revamped gritty or anything near that at worst it will end up like Transformers 1 at best it will be a way more humourous version of GOTG which would be perfect. Maybe involve a Chinese fight choreographer too, market it heavily for China and Japan and BOOM billion dollar franchise. Get David Frank involved as the old leader of the previous generation of Power Rangers and get Laurence Fishbourne as Zordon and Andy Serkis as the robot which I can't remember the name too and keep it as cheesy as the original and maybe add more cheesy power ballad, power 80's arena rock/metal and it will be perfect.
TheRationalNerd - 8/13/2014, 3:46 PM

Well honestly seeing that it seems like Bay may be stepping down from the Transformers franchise it's a slight possibility. I know he's said he's ambitious towards making a documentary film on Elephant poaching but I would totally be in board for his vision of the power rangers. However the script would need to be nice (which I believe it is) !
Seven23 - 8/13/2014, 3:48 PM
I doubt a lot they will release in 2016 !!
yonny616 - 8/13/2014, 3:50 PM

Keep your petty marvel vs dc stuff on threads about either of those companies.
TheOneAboveAll - 8/13/2014, 3:55 PM
If there was one series that Michael Bay should have and was born to direct and helm it is Power Rangers... honestly I usually blame his writers for the story lines but he's improved a whole lot especially the shaky cam and his visual effects are usually top notch. He knows how to appease to middle schoolers-high schoolers and a large demographic very well. As long as he gets a more decent writer than the Oroci-Kurtzman team which have split up it should end up an amazing visual and fun summer blockbuster. I think one of his heavily underrated films is The Island, it goes to show that with a good writer he can do really well directing even if a lot of people didn't like the movie. If they mix GOTG's feel with that of the original MMPR with the visual effects of TF3 and the action value not look of the first Transformers film with the less amounts of shaky cam that TF4 had and they market it right to not only America but China and Japan heavily then it will end up a multi million dollar summer blockbuster.
TheRationalNerd - 8/13/2014, 3:56 PM
July 1 Independence Day 2, Tarzan Angry Birds, The BFG
Jul 8 Doctor Strange
Jul 15 Ice Age 5, The Bourne Legacy 2
Jul 22 King Arthur, Power Rangers (reboot)
Jul 29 Planet of the Apes 3

The only competition it'll have is Independence Day 2 and probably Apes 3. The name "Power Rangers" speaks miles more towards the audience than any of those other films. lol
TheOneAboveAll - 8/13/2014, 3:57 PM
btw most people here used to call me TOAA when I was more involved in the CBM community, if you don't feel like typing my full name I will allow you to refer to me as such.
rorywilliams - 8/13/2014, 3:58 PM
Does nobody else see the irony behind claiming the Power Rangers are too dated in comparison to Batman and the Avengers when Batman was created in the 30's and the Avengers in the 60's?
