AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Showrunners Have A Fairly Solid 2-Year Plan

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. showrunners Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon say they have a two-year plan for the show with Collider. The duo also says there's a list of which characters are available and who's off limits.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been progressing in recent episodes. I'm well aware that I don't speak for everyone but the majority of the vocal-minded agree that the show isn't reaching the potential it could. Hence, the numerous articles around these parts about ways to improve the show. But how do the brain-trust behind Agent Coulson's (Clark Gregg) resurrection and assemblage of a small, specialized task force feel about their show? Said Maurissa Tancharoen (Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog), "We really just try not to think about the scrutiny and the pressure. We’re just trying to make the show that we like, and we’re working really hard at it. When Joss came to us and said, “Let’s make a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show,” we were excited about the idea alone. And then, once we started diving into the world and inventing these new characters that would be a nice group around Coulson, it became a show that we want to watch, so hopefully other people share our feelings."

But with the obvious scrutiny and pressure for success inherent with the first television spinoff of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, do Whedon and Tancharoen have complete autonomy of the show? When asked if ABC gave them guidelines, Whedon (Dollhouse, Spartacus: War of the Damned) stated, "A little bit." Tancharoen echoed that statement, adding, " Yeah, we had a whole pitch for them that mapped out all of the characters and the entire season, and subsequent seasons. They had a nice idea of what it was going to be before they said yes."

So how far ahead is that plan? One season? Two? Three? "We have a fairly solid two-year plan," said Maurissa. She continued, "The exciting and challenging part about our show is that we do want to weave in with the movies, as well. Whatever comes up there might show up a little bit on our show."

Lastly, what character are on the table for the show to use. For comparison, the showrunners on Arrow have said numerous times that they have certain characters that are off limits to the show. But whereas it's still not 100% confirmed whether Arrow exists in the same universe as Man of Steel and the upcoming Batman vs Superman, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is firmly parallels the events of Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. Does that mean they're free to use anyone? Tancharoed answered, "We asked them what we can use. There’s a list of characters that we are allowed to use. Sometimes when we come across others in the comics, we pose that question. If the answer is yes, then we pursue it." So far, we know the list of characters they're allowed to use includes Gravitron, Nick Fury, Victoria Hand and Maria Hill to name a few prominent figures. Whether any of these characters becomes a recurring regular remains to be seen.

For more from the husband-wife duo, head over to Collider to read the full transcript. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesday at 8PM PST/EST on ABC.

Just make it about coulson and Matt Murdock doing random shit and il watch more than two episodes
IDKwhatToChoose - 11/24/2013, 10:41 AM
I watch it every week. It's decent enough but anything comics I am all over.
TelaVizion - 11/24/2013, 10:42 AM
They're doing a great job. It would be cool to introduce someone on the show, then have them pop up in a movie. I would like to see that happen with Hank Pym.

Can't wait for the next episode

@We really just try not to think about the scrutiny..."

Yeah, that's smart. Look how well it worked for Brannon Braga on Star Trek. Oh wait....
maxleresistant - 11/24/2013, 10:47 AM
Guess what movie is released roughly at the end of the second season of agent of shield?

seventhbrother - 11/24/2013, 10:48 AM
This may be a case of nepotism gone wrong
Interestein - 11/24/2013, 10:48 AM
I'm giving it one season, like I did Arrow.
EdgyOutsider - 11/24/2013, 10:49 AM
I watch Agents of Shield every week. I think it's great. Sure, may not be reaching it's potential but, I think it's great while they're still trying to balance the humor and the more serious, darker moments, it's at least not taking itself too seriously. That's one thing I hate about Warner Bros. since their Dark Knight trilogy, people want to make it realistic and serious. Good example, Man of Steel, it took it's self way too seriously. But, I can't bash on them because Iron Man 3 didn't take itself seriously. There's a fine medium to be found.

Keep watching this, decent watch, just hope it improves. Whenever it delves into more dramatic stuff and Coulsons "death" and the characters backgrounds, like Skye and Ward it's great. Bring in Graviton in a big way, and develop the characters and it could be great.

Really liked "The Hub" episode, probably my favourite so far...fingers crossed it keeps getting better, Arrow was just a decent watch to start of with, and is fantastic now
Interestein - 11/24/2013, 10:53 AM
Many people do not understand that Arrow started out horrible too, I struggled to watch the first 10 or so episodes because they were so bad, but as the season went on they got better, so there's still a lot of hope for AoS.
TopCat89 - 11/24/2013, 10:58 AM

I like the idea of introducing 'Daredevil/Matt Murdock' on AOS, before leading to his own show. In fact it could be a great way to introduce other characters to the public....Punisher (maybe), Blade, Luke Cage, Iron Fist etc.....see how the audiences respond, before giving their own shows.

Dude stop joking. First season of Arrow was much better than AoS.

Love this Show!

Can't wait for the next show!!
Jordanstine - 11/24/2013, 11:16 AM
I'll give them this:

The show IS starting to get much better.

I'm still not a fan of the Skye and Fitz-Simmons characters, which alleviate a lot of the comedy and less serious aspects of the show.

^ Their inclusion makes S.H.I.E.L.D. look weak when compared to the cinematic version.

Agents of Shield two year plan.

1. Mention Avengers several times.

2. Mention Thor, Ironman, Hulk, and Cap.

3. Have 3 to 5 minute cameos.

4. Mention that Tahiti is a magical place at least once an episode.

5. Have an episode connected to movie that just got released.
MexicanSexyman - 11/24/2013, 11:20 AM
Just kill off agent Coulson again.
jerryblake - 11/24/2013, 11:23 AM
i stopped at fifth or fourth episode ...
I got ... bored
Jordanstine - 11/24/2013, 11:24 AM
What they need:

1) Less of Skye, Fitz, Simmons - too much teeny bopper comedy around those 3 characters which make SHIELD look like a joke.

2) More Coulson, May, Ward - these are "THE" SHIELD agents.

3) Drop the name dropping of Marvel characters aka Avengers (it's getting too ridiculous) and actually start giving cameos to some of the more popular Marvel characters instead.

4) Keep focusing more and more on the continuing arch of the storyline rather than on the "bad guy of the week" episode arch.
JoeMomma29 - 11/24/2013, 11:24 AM
@ Jerryblake

Have you watched Almost Human?
JoeMomma29 - 11/24/2013, 11:26 AM
@ jordanstine

They really do not need major Marvel characters in the show or even cameos. They just need some B or even C list characters from the comics. I know this one has been thrown out there a lot, but they should feature Taskmaster or even Flagsmasher. Either of those characters would fit perfect in the world of SHEILD.
jerryblake - 11/24/2013, 11:29 AM

no. I saw the trailer and i wasn't sold.

I'm not watching currently anything right now. I stopped watching Dexter after six season. Didn't catch GOT either. Breaking Bad ? I tried but it was boring. HOMYM - i stopped after fifth season.

Waiting for the Preacher.
jerryblake - 11/24/2013, 11:30 AM
in fact The Preacher is the only show that could get me interested.
Inhuman - 11/24/2013, 11:30 AM
2 year plan which means at least 2 seasons. They need to bring in Spider-Woman and Mockingbird
jerryblake - 11/24/2013, 11:32 AM

i would watch SpidermWoman tv show. But only if they wouldn't mix her up with SHIELD.
JoeMomma29 - 11/24/2013, 11:33 AM
@ Jerryblake

The show is actually decent, Breaking Bad was amazing in my opinion. Right now the shows I cannot miss are the following

1. Arrow
2. Black list
3. Walking Dead

And I am excited for The Following and Hannibal this year.
JoeMomma29 - 11/24/2013, 11:35 AM
@ Witcher

LOL! Drops that more than Jay Z! You know my list was just me being sarcastic right?
batesmotel - 11/24/2013, 11:37 AM
Agents of Shit!!
jerryblake - 11/24/2013, 11:39 AM

i end up watching Walking Dead at Season 1.
Black List had interesting trailer.
I never pick up Arrow because it reminded me Smallville.

In fact the only tv show i could go back to are Damages. I end up on season 3.
JoeMomma29 - 11/24/2013, 11:45 AM
I am really looking forward to this series on HBO in January.

@ jerryblake

It looks awesome!!!!!!!! Also Ray Donovan was great as well.
batmanrises - 11/24/2013, 11:55 AM
Arrow has always been great. It's way more watchable than AoS.

This is spot on.
JoeMomma29 - 11/24/2013, 11:57 AM
@ Batmanrises

Thanks for reporting my thoughts! It does sum up Agents of Shield in a nutshell!
jerryblake - 11/24/2013, 11:58 AM

Voight is in it. The trailer looked good.

JoeMomma29 - 11/24/2013, 12:00 PM
@ jerryblake

Ray Donovan was not what it I thought it was going to be. Great show and John Voight is amazing in it.
Inhuman - 11/24/2013, 12:01 PM
Yea I heard Ray Donovan was legit and I thought the show looked stupid at first
JoeMomma29 - 11/24/2013, 12:02 PM
@ Inhuman

That is what I thought, I was like oh great another mob show but it was nothing like that at all.
jerryblake - 11/24/2013, 12:03 PM
Voight kinda remind me Ted Danson in Damages. You should check him out.
