Kelly Hu On The Cancellation Of YOUNG JUSTICE And Her Attraction To Action

Kelly Hu On The Cancellation Of YOUNG JUSTICE And Her Attraction To Action

Kelly Hu has tailored her career around the action genre with numerous roles in both live-action and animation. She was the voice behind Cheshire on Young Justice and currently portrays China White on the CW's Arrow.

Recently, Hu joined the voice cast of Nickelodeon's new TMNT as Karai, the daughter of Shredder. She also was the voice of Cheshire on Cartoon Network's Young Justice and portrays DC Comics villainess, China White on The CW's Arrow. These are but a few of the action oriented roles in her long career which has included stints on The Spectacular Spider-Man, Afro Samurai, X2, The Scorpion King, Batman: Under The Red Hood, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights and many more similar projects. Below, you can read a portion of her interview with MTV Geek where she touches on the cancellation of Young Justice and on what attracts a former Miss Teen USA to the action genre.

Kelly Hu action roles

On learning of the cancellation of Young Justice and the development of her character, Cheshire.
Kelly Hu: "It was such a disappointment, because it was such a fun show and really well written and [Cheshire's] really fun character to play. She was definitely the evil sister to start off with... but as things went on, you see the different history, and they even jump five years into the future where she's got a relationship and a baby. So it made it much more interesting in that sense. It's such a disappointment that fans aren't going to get to know more of these great characters because I think they were going in a really great direction."

On what attracts her to the action genre.
KH: There weren't a lot of action roles growing up--there were a few, maybe, like Wonder Woman, but then it wasn't real action. I always loved the idea of learning martial arts, but it wasn't until I was in my 20's that I really started doing it and taking up karate. I came from a tough area. When I was young, my mother would not let me get my ears pierced because I used to get into too many fights. I'm always attracted to playing the tough girls. I guess I'm still sort of feisty and a little bit of a tomboy [laughs].

I met Kelly back in 2004 at Wizard World in Chicago and she was just super sweet. Funny as can be. Gorgeous. And I went up to her and asked her what she thought about being the new fanboy fantasy girl. And she got real flushed, started smiling, giggled a bit, it was super cute. And she responded, after asking me my name, "John, I want your number and these other fanboy number. Because if my boyfriend ever makes me mad, I'm calling you all up for a date." Followed by cute laughter. Great girl.

TheAmazingSpiderMan47 - 2/3/2013, 2:41 PM
its too bad carrey was cast as the riddler, he is a prototype joker
i highly doubt he'll ever be cast as him tho, just cuz it would be the same acting as he did as the riddler

I remember her quite fondly from Sammo Hung's TV series Martial Law.

And from meeting her in person at Comic-Con,I can attest she's STUNNING in person-both in looks and her great personality.

HavocPrime - 2/3/2013, 3:54 PM
Off topic, Benedict Cummberbatch for Joker.

@TonyChu @imadick

I put the BONUS TRACK are just that, suggestions, if any producer is taken seriously is up to them, I bring myself looking for a candidate who can play a role, character and villain as important as it was able to make Heath Ledger TDK before dying

and I'm a fan of Michael Bay's Transformers, not because I have to deny it, I find entertaining movies, but that does not mean that they can be better, if the director obviously changed and perhaps the writer, but I see it impossible, and I just did a question and suggestion for TMNT Michael Bay. ...nothing more

@TonyChu @imadick

But Ashton Klutcher and Hayden Chritensen can't act for shit.
SunfireUrA55 - 2/3/2013, 7:47 PM
Please talk about your batcrap elsewhere. This is about Kelly, anyway she should be seen in more movies Not voice over. She should be Psyclocke for the next X-movie.

Just when I thought I couldn't love Kelly Hu any more.

She's just great, and I love feistiness in a woman.

@IronLantern That's why we have nice things! You're so lucky, man!

@TonyChu Ashton Kutcher can act. He has been getting rave reviews for his portrayal of Steve Jobs in that biopic. He also did an incredible job in The Butterfly Effect.

@imadick Mentally challenged? Give the guy a break. Those are his casting suggestions. There's no need to insult him like that.

@Gambit Wow! I forgot she was in Surf Ninjas.

@ tankD @spidermoe7

i agree 100% that Jim Carrey would make a great Joker!!!!!!!!
Optimus83 - 2/4/2013, 11:11 AM
I think the

I think that Benedict Cummberbatch is better for the Riddler/Edward Nygma

My ideal would have been to include the character of the Joker in this Fan Casting, but as the actor who played him (Heath Ledger) died of an accidental drug overdose in 2008 I have been unable to add another actor to take its role in a Batman movie or maybe even a sequel to the Justice League

and Kelly Hu for Karai in Michael's Bay TMNT Reboot
Optimus83 - 2/4/2013, 11:17 AM

Jim Carrey is good for Joker. ...the only problem, too old

and was the Riddler in Batman Forever

remember that Heath Ledger has 28 years old when die, now Christian Bale has 39/40

the ideal is a actor with 39/40 years old, slim, blonde with blue eyes and I can do as a supervillain as psychopath Hannibal Lecter in a Batman movie
kemuael - 2/4/2013, 4:04 PM
am so glad young justice is gone...that series was more lame than the justice league series
