Sony Pictures Pushes Animated POPEYE 3D Movie To 2015

No specific release date has been set yet, but Sony Animation has apparently moved its upcoming 3D big screen adaptation Popeye (which will be directed by Genndy Tartakovsky) from its September 2014 slot to the year 2015.

According to Box Office Mojo, Sony Pictures has pushed back its animated Popeye movie (which sees the iconic sailor man make his triumphant return to the big screen, complete with 3D). Originally set for a September 26th, 2014 release date, the adaptation will now hit theaters in an already crowded 2015. No specific date has been announced yet, but 2015 has plenty of competition in the form of The Avengers 2, Pirates Of The Caribbean 5, Star Wars: Episode VII, Finding Dory, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, and many more big films. Popeye will be directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (who most recently helmed Hotel Transylvania for Sony Animation). Screenwriters Jay Scherick and David Ronn (The Smurfs) were hired to pen the script last year. Are you looking forward to this movie?

Genndy is directing? Thats awesome! I loved Popeye as a kid, but someone should have him make a Samurai Jack movie one of these days too. That show rocked!

Apropos of nothing, I'm here to admit I liked Robin Williams POPEYE. But I was 6, so what did I know?
BubblesShedAndBreakfast - 5/11/2013, 3:13 PM
I hope it's set back in the day and not all modernized like most remakes. I don't wanna see Popeye searching the net or using an iPhone and talking in modern slang!

Or smoking a vapor pipe haha

PLUSH - 5/11/2013, 3:35 PM
Why would they even make this crap?
Facade - 5/11/2013, 3:35 PM
I'm glad they went anime rather than a mix of anime and real-life.
TheSuperguy - 5/11/2013, 3:36 PM

If Genndy is attached to it then chances are it'll be good. Really enjoyed Hotel Transylvania and pretty much every show on the CN he's worked on so bring on Popeye the Sailor.

I liked Robin Williams' Popeye as well and I still do. I honestly am not sure anyone could make a better film. Maybe this new one will appeal to the kids a little bit more, I don't know.

They tried a low-budget direct-to-DVD all CGI Popeye movie about 5 years ago, it was cool seeing him in that format and I can't wait to see a big-budget version. Hopefully, it will be epic-ish like Tin Tin and maybe visit Goon Island.
Other all CGI movies I'd like to see....The Jetsons and/or the Flintstones. (No live action)

A 3d animated movie probably for kids. What's is there to complain about?
TheGreenNinja - 5/12/2013, 3:33 PM
Awesome. Love Popeye. Williams was the shit on the LAM.

Popeye was an awesome movie. Went to the film set when I was on holiday in Malta. Awesome place. A whole sea village kept intact.
