What Is The Real Reason Mario Is Not In WRECK-IT RALPH?

What Is The Real Reason Mario Is Not In WRECK-IT RALPH?

Disney's upcoming 3D computer-animated comedy Wreck-It Ralph will feature some of most iconic characters from video games, but there seems to be a glaring omission, like a short, pudgy, Italian plumber named Mario.

Total Film recently spoke with Wreck-It Ralph producer Clark Spencer and asked him flat out why Mario is not in the film.
"The hard thing was, we were trying to work out the right way to use a character like Mario. It had to be organic to the film, we didn't want to just paste him in there. For Bowser, it made perfect sense for him to be a member of the Bad Anon group. For Mario himself we couldn't think of the right way to incorporate him into the film, and so we didn't do it."

It all sounds well and good but in July Vulture reported that director Rich Moore had mentioned a much different reason behind Mario's absence.
Rich Moore said at Comic-Con today that Nintendo wouldn't let him use Mario himself. "And his brother (Luigi) wanted more money."

I'm sure Nintendo wasn't too happy with Moore for disclosing that financial issues left Mario and his brother Luigi out in the cold. Either way the game company did come to an agreement on Super Mario Bros.'s Bowser. He will participate in the film, and perhaps that gave them the leverage to request a retelling of the story behind Mario's nonappearance.

Wreck-It Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game’s perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (voice of Jack McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes… so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan—win a medal—but soon wrecks everything, and accidently unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph’s only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman), a young troublemaking “glitch” from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it’s “Game Over” for the entire arcade?

The 3D computer-animated comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and directed by Rich Moore, is set for release on November 2, 2012.

Dumb movie for kids who never played those games and pseudo-nerds who loves to watch kid movies.

Mrcool210 - 9/26/2012, 11:31 PM
if they found a way to fit sonic in they could find a way to fit mario, so i call bullshit on that first explanation
Christuffer - 9/26/2012, 11:35 PM
This movie looks awesome. Mario is not necessary lol but Luigi would be much cooler
blackscienceman - 9/27/2012, 12:04 AM
i want another incredibles movie!
gaikinger - 9/27/2012, 12:59 AM
What about Toad and Yoshi? That little mushroom head is truly iconic.
CPBuff22 - 9/27/2012, 1:34 AM
I figured he wasn't in it for the same reason Donkey Kong isn't in the film. The Fix-it guy and Ralph are Mario & Donkey Kong rip offs. Thought that was obvious to everyone.
FrankieDedo - 9/27/2012, 1:51 AM
@CPBuff yeah i thought the same, there would be two identical characters in the movie...if only it was a movie with donkey kong and mario instead of those two unknown guys, still funny, i didn't have anything against those, but...mario is mario!
CoulsonLives - 9/27/2012, 3:43 AM
Needs to be in the sequel... I call Sonic as the villain! And Luigi is better than Mario
ThunderCougarFalconBird - 9/27/2012, 4:03 AM
@ Chloefornication - I must disagree. My son has just turned 6 and he plays and loves Sonic and Mario games. This movie, even without Mario will be something he will enjoy just because of Sonic, Bowser and Eggman being involved.
orpheus - 9/27/2012, 4:18 AM
Look how personal and worked up over a childrens video game movie these adults are getting. Incredible. Maybe it's time to discover something more important than such huge personal investment in something so trivial.
toco89 - 9/27/2012, 4:49 AM

You're very mature, I can tell.

Stumblin - 9/27/2012, 5:31 AM
@ orpheus, yeah, like comics.
OtakuPapi - 9/27/2012, 6:08 AM
no megaman?
jimoakley666 - 9/27/2012, 6:12 AM
Hmm. Just watched the trailer for the first time and the "Heroes Duty" joke just doesn't work outside of Amurker.

1/ Only Amurkins pronounce 'duty' and "doody". Everyone else pronounces it as "duty"...

2/ Only Amurkins call shit a 'doody'.

I had to really think why the character was laughing at that and when I finally realised the lost in translation punch line I just just sighed and rolled my eyes.
nowtheresaBATman - 9/27/2012, 6:55 AM
Sonic wouldn't sign on otherwise
plasticman - 9/27/2012, 7:03 AM
But where is Crash Bandicoot?

@jimoakley- Is there a hit song in Amurker called "Proud to be an Amurkin"? Where is Amurker, Rand McNally does not allow be to find this country anywhere on his globe.

is Soda Popinski in this??? haHa
TheStranger - 9/27/2012, 8:44 AM
Yeah Fixer is a carpenter and thats what Mario originally was supposed to be. The character is obviously based off of Mario and his video game origins.
TexasAvenger - 9/27/2012, 9:26 AM
LMAO at Chloefornication talking shit. We still haven't forgot about you losing your shit about some concept art pics of Chloe Morentz and calling her "my Chloe". She's not even of legal age, you [frick]ing weirdo. GTFOH.
OhGawDuhhh - 9/27/2012, 9:34 AM

LMAO You're so dry and boring! Go play Super Mario Bros and cheer up dawg!
OhGawDuhhh - 9/27/2012, 9:35 AM

When guys obsess over really young girls, it's disconcerting, huh?

Why don't the girls your age like you? And don't say it's because you're a nice guy!!!
Natetrix79 - 9/27/2012, 9:40 AM
CPBuff22 hit the nail on the head if you look at Ralph in 8-bit art he looks exactly like Donkey Kong with clothes on & Felix looks like a mustache-less Mario Luigi hybrid. They probably pitch the idea to Nintendo with Donkey & Mario as the lead characters but Nintendo probably wanted too much money. (That's my theory anyway)
jimpinto24 - 9/27/2012, 9:45 AM
No Mario or Luigi!!! *SIGH*
MovieTheaterLad - 9/27/2012, 10:22 AM
I have never owned a Nintendo game system in my life, and there has never been a single game from them that I've ever wanted to have to get a system for.

In my opinion, the only thing Nintendo is really good for is re-hashing the same tired characters over and over and over again. It's like Jim Gaffigan's explanation of Mexican food at 1:50

"What is on the Nintendo 64 and Gameboy?"
"Mario, Zelda and Pokemon"
"Oh well what's on the Gamecube and Gameboy Advance?"
"Mario, Zelda and Pokemon"
"Oh well what's on the Wii and DS?"
"Mario, Zelda and Pokemon"

Same goes with shit like Call of Duty.
Ha1frican - 9/27/2012, 10:57 AM
Seems pretty clear, its the same reason DK isn't in it they already have a character that is a direct representation of him so having him as well would be wierd
TexasAvenger - 9/27/2012, 11:04 AM
@OhGawDuhhh Man you should've seen this guy losing his shit. Pretty disturbing, pretty funny, but all in all pathetic lol.

This movie looks awesome. I'm definitely taking my brother and sister to watch it.
WinterSoldier24 - 9/27/2012, 12:11 PM
@greenlanternSF - Why bring Grif into this thread? Lol he hasn't even commented on here. He's funny so calm down.

@TexasAvenger - Dude, I remember reading that shit about he was all in love with her & being a grown man himself-- pretty sick. I had to refrain from commenting since I have a daughter but can't accost him since its the Internet. Well, I guess I could. He's pretty sick, though.

Anywho, my daughter liked the look of the flick, so I'm gonna have to shell out $40+ bucks for tickets, popcorn, drinks etc. I just hope she doesn't lose interest half-way through it. Talk about a waste of cash, lol.

LP4 - 9/27/2012, 12:43 PM
This movie is gonna rock. I love all the character appearances but I too call bull on their dumb excuse for not adding in Super Mario.
JULEZ13 - 9/27/2012, 2:32 PM
I don't mind that they didn't include Mario. He'd just upstage Ralph.

This movie actually looks pretty good. If its successful, Nintendo should pair up with Disney and make a Mario & Luigi movie the same way they're making Ralph. I'd die to see that!!

Oh and Mario >>>>>>>>>>> Luigi!
Cartoon22 - 9/27/2012, 4:19 PM
That is an excuse a bad one for not having Mario ! Oh bowser fits the bad guys team whatever! They have sonic even if Mario had a small part under sonic it would of. Brought in more people! And I know it'd be cool for me to see Mario on there even for a small part
Cartoon22 - 9/27/2012, 4:20 PM
...... They know that Nintendo didn't give them the go that's why he's not on there! Mario would have brought them more $$$$$$$
Cartoon22 - 9/27/2012, 4:21 PM
@JULEZ13 .... Mario would not have outstaged Ralph ....Mario could of bad a small part or a cameo .... sonic is on there! And we know sonic if far more known than Ralph
mgeoff88 - 9/27/2012, 8:15 PM
Mario should've been included in the movie. If Bowser is there, Mario should be too.

@JULEZ I would pay to see that! A CG Super Mario Bros. movie? That would be awesome!!!

That's the only way a Super Mario Bros. movie could work. Lol, I don't want another live-action one after the last movie.
comicb00kguy - 9/28/2012, 10:23 AM
this movie looks like a lot of fun for any of us old enough to remember real video games, before they became way too realistic and way too complex- when it was just a joystick and a couple of action buttons to do anything. Wish I could find an original Nintendo- that system had some of the most fun and addictive games I've ever played. The old Atari was tons of fun too, despite its primitive graphics. The games were fun and challenging.
