The latest Dragon Ball Z film, the first in 17 years will be released in IMAX in Japan on March 30th. This will be the first Japanese film to debut in IMAX. Read on for the official press release.

The film, unlike Dragon Ball GT, will be part of the official Dragon Ball canon, with creator Akira Toriyama supplying direction on the story. The film will be set between chapter 517 and 518 of the manga, often called 'The Lost Decade' due to the 10 year time-jump following the battle with Majin Boo.

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX; TSX: IMX) and Toei Company Ltd. today announced that Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods will be digitally re-mastered into the immersive IMAX® format and released to IMAX® Digital theatres in Japan starting March 30. The film marks the first-ever Japanese movie to be released in IMAX® as well as the first movie installment in Akira Toriyama's iconic Dragon Ball franchise in 17 years.

Toriyama, highly influential in manga animation and known for his playful, influential storytelling and distinctive art style, has been involved with the development of the screenplay and the production for this latest feature. He has delivered a completely new original story that is focused on the period between the "Z" and "GT" Dragon Ball animated series – or, more specifically, between installments 517 and 518 of the Dragon Ball comic book series, filling the 10-year story lapse after Demon Boo is defeated.

"We're proud to be partnering with a pioneering manga creator like Akira Toriyoma to release the latest installment of this beloved franchise and our first Japanese film in IMAX," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Entertainment. "With its fast-paced battle sequences and stunning visuals, we believe Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods is an ideal fit for The IMAX Experience®."

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology for presentation in IMAX®. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique immersive environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

Drangon Ball Z has a place in my heart, but Naruto replaced it as my number 1 anime.

@ Gusto -

The Asian community is not pleased with that picture.
thalidomide - 2/5/2013, 9:21 AM
They should make Gohan a BAMF on this one.
MutantEquality - 2/5/2013, 9:21 AM
This is the best news in awhile now and that's saying a lot. I loved it when i was young but never thought i would see anything new or quality again. After the struggle to get though GT i just gave up.

American release PLEASE!!
MutantEquality - 2/5/2013, 9:25 AM
@NPaMusic They did an english dub of "Destroy all Saiyans" in the DBZ game. It was good but I saw the original in subtitles and the one in the Video game left a lot out. I would love that as well.

Oh my childhood memories how they were great....I would have creamed my pants if this came out when I was a kid watching all of DB DBZ DBGT. (yea I was a complete DB fan)

I wonder if someone would be brave enough to do webisodes of a live action DB so that it could potentially inspire the right director and producer to make a great live action movie.... One can only dream I guess... (the one that did come out was a sorry excuse of DBZ)
ninjahulk - 2/5/2013, 9:32 AM
dam no dbz american release date come on, db is one of my child hood show sinces the 80s dont do this to me i need to see this.
OtakuPapi - 2/5/2013, 9:45 AM
They should just reimagine Dbz there is so much you can do with Dbz now that you couldn't then!
DefcoN - 2/5/2013, 10:01 AM
Dragon Ball was the shiz when one was a kid.
RaleighAntrobus - 2/5/2013, 10:28 AM
Talk about beating a dead horse...
Stumblin - 2/5/2013, 10:30 AM
Wow those voices were incredibly annoying. I think it's funny how Goku sounds like an old cracked out lady.

DBZ was never my thing, it got old watching people grunt for 15 minutes, fight for a minute grunt some more, starring out at nothing for another five minutes then end of show...every single episode.
AIGALAN - 2/5/2013, 10:36 AM
Awesome news! Cant wait till this is released here. Want it to have the same feel the cell saga or freeza one had.
ahhmynuts - 2/5/2013, 10:45 AM
i think this is gonna be a big test to see if they should make another series. if its popular, and i think it will be, it only makes sense to begin a new tv series...
JoeMomma29 - 2/5/2013, 10:49 AM
I hope they bring Dragon Ball in a new official series!
IronManny819 - 2/5/2013, 10:52 AM
Please God, let there be an American theatrical release.
IIIAdamantiumIII - 2/5/2013, 10:55 AM
oh my glob!
subzero1077 - 2/5/2013, 10:56 AM
Man of Steel > Goku
dnno1 - 2/5/2013, 11:03 AM

So this is Goku vs Mewtwo?
MutantEquality - 2/5/2013, 11:04 AM
Erase GT!!! More movies!!

I just hope this end differently than a Spirit Bomb or Kamehameha. Been there done that.
dnno1 - 2/5/2013, 11:06 AM

Man of Steel >>> Goku
MutantEquality - 2/5/2013, 11:34 AM
lol @Kamen

Havensent - 2/5/2013, 11:36 AM
KamenRiderJ22, you can say whatever you like, but that Japanese VA sounds like a retarded mental patient. I thought my ears were gonna start bleeding.

DBZ English VA's >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> DBZ Japanese VA's

Anyway, I never knew about this until now, and I've always wished Toriyama would give us the actual follow up to the Buu saga we deserved. Can not wait to have it released over here in America with the English VA's dubbing it over.
Havensent - 2/5/2013, 12:18 PM
KamenRider, that would be nice if you didn't directly address those who don't like it. So do yourself a favor and stop lying to yourself. It makes you come off as silly.

Now watch how you apparently give "zero [frick]s" but will respond to me anyway.
Stumblin - 2/5/2013, 12:50 PM
Sorry Kamen but Goku's voice sounds goofy as hell to me. I don't care if it's beloved my many that means jack to me. So are a lot of crappy films and shows that doesn't mean I gotta like it either ;)

I have a couple of friends who love DBZ, I just couldn't get into it, neither the American or Japanese version.
Stumblin - 2/5/2013, 12:51 PM
The American version is probably the worst because the pacing is thrown to hell and it's just a lot of standing around starring and grunting. I can see how you guys like the original version but some of those voices are like nails on a chalk board.
Havensent - 2/5/2013, 12:54 PM
KamenRider is predictable and butthurt.

Oh, btw, even though many may love the Japanese VA's, many also love the English( superior) VA's. So even bringing that up in the first place made no sense.

If you truly gave zero [frick]s you wouldn't have brought it up to begin with.

Now go find some more gifs to post to prove how butthurt you are.

CavEl - 2/5/2013, 12:58 PM
@ Gusto - Still mad about Pearl Habor, huh? How old were you, like 200 when that happened?
Havensent - 2/5/2013, 1:00 PM
KamenRider, there is no fight here. You were wrong and got upset because someone dared to call you out on it.

Grow up and stop your whining.
GSpawn - 2/5/2013, 1:04 PM

How is he butt hurt? Because he addressed you directly when you tried to make a fact sound like an opinion with "you can say whatever you like but that Japanese VA sounds like a retarded mental patient"

Okay so what, to you it might sound like that but lots of people like the Japanese VA, doesn't mean in any way that because in your opinion the voice sucks doesn't mean the English version is superior in any way -___-
Havensent - 2/5/2013, 1:23 PM
Gspawn - He started out posting negative images to anyone who had a differing opinion and one that said he didn't give a [frick] what anyone said, eventually calling the English VA's a "tard"...And then I responded to him by saying what I said calling out his hypocrisy

Maybe you should read what's going on before you decide to White Knight the dude.
GSpawn - 2/5/2013, 1:39 PM

yes he did say the English VA was a tard, after he was pointing out that people were insulting the Japanese VA lol, it's fair play, now if he came in here saying "Jesus the english VA sucks so [frick]ing bad, Japanese one rules!" then that's different, all he did was respond to the people who were trying to bad mouth the Japanese VA not to diss those who had a differing opinion.

if those people say such things as the Japanese VA sucks, then someone else just as much as a right to come back and bad mouth the English VA...big difference was and BTW yes it's okay if he did post something negative to those who had a differing opinion in this case, it's an article about DBZ, why try to come here and insult it if it sucks to you?
Havensent - 2/5/2013, 1:46 PM
KamenRider - I came in here reading an article about a series I love, not to see dumbass posts like yours. Stop with all of you pretentiousness. I chose to respond because you decided to unnecessarily diss the English VA's calling the guy who talks for Goku a "tard". I'm not trying to sound smart, I just appear that way to simply minded folk like you.

Btw, how many [frick]s do you give now? lol Sit down some where.
Havensent - 2/5/2013, 1:50 PM
Gspawn - You're still trying to white knight the dude and it's silly. He couldn't take anyone saying that they hated the Japanese VA's and decided to post gifs basically telling them to kiss his ass, and that he didn't give a [frick] what they thought, saying that the English VA's sounded like a "tard"

You can write to me until the cows come home and you're not changing my mind.

But my post above to him is the last. He's a clown and not worth it.

One thing we can all agree on is that we're hyped for a true continuation of Akira Toriyama's story. Let's end it there.
Havensent - 2/5/2013, 1:56 PM
lol Look at the little clown.

Probably making a real mean face right now and punching at air in front of his monitor XD
