In addition to the 1972 series and its spinoff, Kikaider-01, an anime of the series followed in 2001 along with a 4-episode OVA from Sony Animation. The film will open in Japan on May 24.

The film takes place in a futuristic setting, where Japan has replaced most of its workforce with androids and robots. When the brilliant robot engineer Dr. Nobuhiko Kōmyōji dies, his rivals steal his designs and begin a plan for world conquest using the might of his robotic creations. Ten Shimoyama directs the film which stars Jingi Irie, Ryūji Harada, Aimi Satsukawa and Maryjun Takahashi. Here's a trailer for the 2001 anime series which younger fans will probably be more familiar with than the '72 tokusatsu live-action show. It aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim in the early 200s.

I'm a sucker for stuff like this, gonna keep a eye out for it. I wonder if we will ever get a Guyver remake, loved the first two (mostly because of nostalgia).

This is cool and all but I would LOVE to see a Voltes V or a Daimos film.

Agreed! When it comes to a movie that needs a big budget, Japan can't handle it. I wish Attack on Titan could be made over here, even though we would still mess it up.

I always loved the concept of Guyver, the first one is kinda a hard watch though.

As long as Japan only intends to compete with Japan, they will always be limited.

I doubt there kicking themselves over the. The Japanese are infamous for not caring about how well any of there stuff does outside of Japan in the entertainment industry.

Looks amateurish just like every other Japanese movie.

I agree with TankD and BustASpideyPose. Guyver all the way and it should be a Hollywood made film.

Man, how I wish Marvel Studios or WB would acquire some Anime/Manga properties. Could you imagine the combination of those stories and resources? Win all the way...

The worst part is that it's not the Japanese film industry that's the problem. Japan still makes some incredible films. They just don't make their way over to the States like they used to. The problem is that their "blockbusters" are made quickly and cheaply and adhere to a strict formula to ensure that money will be made. Right now our only real representation of Japanese films is the stuff like this, the live action Kiki's Delivery Service, and the Gatchaman movie.
