Full Size PATLABOR Mecha Spotted En Route To Live-Action Filming

A full-scale replica of the Patlabor mecha has been spotted by fans in Tokyo as it travels from its construction facility to the film's set. It's surprising to see a giant robot film use a full-scale model as opposed to going 100% CGI.

Onlookers have managed to capture several snaps of the full-scale replica of the Patlabor mecha being used in the live-action film from Tohokushinsha Film Corporation. The film is currently slated for a 2014 release and has secured the involvement of the anime's original director, Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell). The giant robot was spotted in Yokohama City, which is a little south of Tokyo.

'GHOST IN THE SHELL' Director Boards Live-Action PATLABOR

Patlabor also known as Mobile Police Patlabor, is a 1988 anime and manga that centered around the special robotics force of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police as they solved various cases in a then-near-future of 1998. There have been several anime films, anime series, mangas, light novels and video games to date.

OMG... No words can describe the tingling feeling I'm getting from this movie based on the OVAs. I'm a big Gundam fan, and Patlabor is actually a Gundam through and through. Japanese Gov wants to make Gundams a reality, this way they can keep the gaijin away. Woohoo, hopefully they can do a Gundam vs Pacific RIM vortex spinner movie.
P862010 - 8/3/2013, 6:45 PM
looks extremely plastic looks like a gigantic toy
CrimsonFlash - 8/3/2013, 6:46 PM
Can we just skip these mech animes ive never heard of and make a god damn gundam movie already.
DarthLaney - 8/3/2013, 6:47 PM
And Bay can't make Optimus Prime actually look like Prime because ....

The Japanese need to start making these movies in English too start making major $$$$$

That is just awesome
RaMMaR - 8/3/2013, 6:47 PM
*sniff* I love you, Japan!
Logan5 - 8/3/2013, 6:51 PM

It's like the full scale Gundam from a few years back!
marvel72 - 8/3/2013, 6:51 PM
is it wrong that i'm feeling aroused right now.

i hope they've got a live action movie of this planned.

marvel72 - 8/3/2013, 6:56 PM
@ everyone

have you guys seen this before.....

storyteller - 8/3/2013, 6:57 PM
Well at least we got the transformers.
Logan5 - 8/3/2013, 7:03 PM
Supported the "Rim" again earlier and despite Del Toro undergoing surgery(something got lost somewhere in the translation)during principle photography, the Mecha on Kaiju sequences are some of the best we've ever seen despite the fact that there really is no comparison to date(Bay-formers don't count)! Enjoyed the Rim for what it was, but all I have is: ?????? I'll keep my mouth shut, for I loved what Legendary gave us.., but where it fell short.., it fvckin' Kaiju ripped a new hole into another realm of existance: that's not a clever sequel setup. Del Toro.., get on your weaknesses 'cause after the "Rim," I'm glad "At The Mountains Of Madness" is a "no-go" at current.

I can't wait til this guy comes face to face with a Sentinel.

Welcome to the movie crossovers era, bitches !
NostalgicYouth - 8/3/2013, 7:08 PM
Knowing most of these film companies by now, a live-action Gundam movie won't even have the same design from the Anime. Considering its so damn hard, to stay true to the source material.
CrimsonFlash - 8/3/2013, 7:11 PM
Marvel72 that was pretty cool haha wonder who put all the money into that. Also thousands of BBs sound super dangerous haha
Sentient1 - 8/3/2013, 7:11 PM
NostalgicYouth - 8/3/2013, 7:14 PM

Hyperionsisthetruth - 8/3/2013, 7:32 PM

TheLetter10 - 8/3/2013, 8:31 PM
What a bunch of kids in here... calling it Robotech (which is an American bastardization of Macross), people calling it a "Zord"... how old are you people? PATLABOR is a GOOD series, and them making it a practical set piece is a GOOD thing.
wookiefit - 8/3/2013, 8:34 PM
@RGINLA - Yes! Def need Star Blazers.

@marvel72 - Love that video. Seen it before. Fav part is it driving down the street.
YearOne - 8/3/2013, 9:28 PM
Marvel72, that thing that shoots water from 4 years ago. $999,999 was it? Or 2 mil.
Bam - 8/3/2013, 9:32 PM
Alrite I know we're having a good time talking about what this means for mech movies but can we stop for a second and say

sephiroth211 - 8/3/2013, 9:33 PM
