All You Need Is Kill #1

The folks over at VIZ Media were kind enough to hook me up with the first volume of All You Need Is Kill, thanks to the digital-first debut that hit last week.  This is Takeshi Obata's (DEATH NOTE, BAKUMAN) manga adaptation of Japanese military science fiction breakthrough light novel of the same name by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.

When the alien Mimics invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor called a Jacket and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to be reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On his fifth iteration, he gets a message from a mysterious ally – the female soldier known as the Full Metal Bitch. Is she the key to Keiji's escape or his final death?

Sound familiar?  Many of you probably know this story as the more recent Edge of Tomorrow, the film adaptation directed by Doug Liman, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt that hit theaters last month.

If you're a fan of the film, a fan of manga, or just a plain old comic lover, you'll LOVE the All You Need Is Kill manga comic.  It blew me away!  The story and dialogue are both very well done and the artwork is fantastic! I read the 215 page adaptation in one sitting and couldn't put it down. I've included a few pages to wet your appetite!

Remember to read from right-to-left, or it may be confusing...

Even thought I liked the movie, I wish it looked more like how this manga looks.

Not true Val.

You have beer.

That's all you need. Really.
fettastic - 6/27/2014, 8:23 AM
"VERY popular"? It hasn't even hit $78M and it cost $178M to make.
KingPatel - 6/27/2014, 8:25 AM
@fettastic It's made nearly $300M and hasn't even opened in Japan yet.
Gusto - 6/27/2014, 8:49 AM
I'm working on my own manga...All You Need Is Drink.
XF14 - 6/27/2014, 8:52 AM
Looks way better than the movie.
NateBest - 6/27/2014, 8:53 AM
@fettastic - Everyone I know that's seen the movie has LOVED it, plus it's made plenty of money. It would have done better in the US if it had opened on a different weekend.

@SpiderFraud - I like the look of the manga better as well. The movie designs were cool, but I don't think they hold a candle to the manga.
maxleresistant - 6/27/2014, 8:54 AM
When first announced, "Edge Of Tomorrow" was titled "All you need is kill"
SmellofDuty - 6/27/2014, 9:12 AM
I did enjoy the film. Good summer blockbuster. Never really cared for any of the characters though... AAs much time as you spent with them you never even really got to know them. But all around I did like the movie!
Nemeres - 6/27/2014, 9:12 AM
This movie was the tits. Can't wait to get my hands on the manga.
space - 6/27/2014, 9:13 AM
I knew going into the movie that it was based off of this. I liked the movie, but the manga is way better.
jimoakley666 - 6/27/2014, 10:21 AM
That looks a lot better than the film designs. I fuking hate manga faces though. With their boiled egg eyes and no-nose.
Thelastdalek - 6/27/2014, 10:34 AM
@jimoakley666

Why do so many people call that manga style when there's plenty of manga's that don't look like that (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure for example)

Hmm, I thought All you Need is Kill was another movie Tom Cruise was going to be in. I probably was reading an article back before anyone knew what it was going to be called.
JackofallTrades - 6/27/2014, 11:45 AM
@Gusto - here is your teaser trailer
fettastic - 6/27/2014, 11:50 AM
@wailer, I knew a guy when I was a kid who actually had that album. As I'm sure you know, it was an album cover for Yesterday & Today, which was almost immediately pulled from shelves. How in the holy [frick] it ever went out like that in the first place is a mystery. Anyway, it was the pride of this guy's collection and I'm sure it's worth a lot of money today.
InsideMan - 6/27/2014, 12:04 PM

Thelastdalek - 6/27/2014, 12:09 PM
@InsideMan

Ile stick to Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
RandyBobandy - 6/27/2014, 12:19 PM
How can anyone complain about the art style in that manga? It's 100x better on every level (including a technical drawing level) than the art in basically every American comic book that doesn't have Ribic or Opena doing the duties. Manga faces are give and take, but the figure drawing and sense of action is amazing.
Thelastdalek - 6/27/2014, 12:35 PM
@Randyobandy
Um what? Manga is just like any other medium some mangas have great art while others have shitty art
TheSoulEater - 6/27/2014, 5:02 PM
OH GREAT A MANGA ABOUT GIANT MECHA'S!!! THAT NEVER HAPPENS!!!
Thelastdalek - 6/27/2014, 5:50 PM
@TheSoulEater

1: There are no Giant Mecha in this so I have no idea what your talking about there.

2: Giant Mecha is a hole genre of anime/manga. By your we might as well say OH GREAT A COMIC ABOUT SUPER HERO'S!!! THAT NEVER HAPPENS!!!
NateBest - 6/27/2014, 6:43 PM
@fettastic - Who are you calling stupid? Seriously, there's no need to be rude.
AnakinsTwin - 6/27/2014, 6:46 PM
@fettastic: I think your math is a little off and your being way too aggressive as well !
marvel72 - 6/27/2014, 7:40 PM
