FAN MADE: WB Take Notes, This Is How You Do A Live-Action AKIRA

Over many years, Warner Bros. has tried and failed to make a live-action remake of Katsuhiro Ohtomo's 1988 Japanese animated cyberpunk action film, Akira. Hit the jump to see a wonderful live-action take on the material created by fans.

"The Akira Project is a crowd-sourced, non-profit project meant to create a live action fan trailer of AKIRA, the renowned manga-turned-anime film from the late 1980′s; a stunning example of both mediums as art forms. While Hollywood has been working on a live-action Akira movie for a few years now, we, as fans, wanted to take a shot at making our own adaptation. A chance to stick as close to the source material as possible. A chance to do Akira Justice." - The Akira Project

Akira (1988) - Neo-Tokyo, 2019. The city is well on the way to rebuilding after World War III. The central characters, Kaneda and Tetsuo, two high school drop-outs, are members of a joy-riding motorcycle gang. In the opening scene, Kaneda and Tetsuo stumble upon a secret government project to develop telekinetic humans, apparently for use as weapons. Tetsuo learns of the existence of his 'peer' Akira, the project's most powerful subject, and determines to challenge him...

Actors: Nozomu Sasaki, Mami Koyama, Mitsuo Iwata * Director: Katsuhiro Otomo

Mother of God that was [frick]ing EPIC!

Dotanuki - 5/9/2014, 5:16 PM
I wouldn't say that was a great trailer. The editing was a little odd, music didn't quite work and the vocals were flat.

BUT as a proof of concept for an Akira movie it was [frick]ing awesome. It did a beautiful job of translating the anime into live action. Loved the inclusion of the giant teddy bear.

Generic bullsh*t is generic.
Enphlieuwince - 5/9/2014, 5:19 PM
Wooooooow. That is THE best fanmade film I've ever seen. I hope those folks get more work and do more anime adaptations.
UnrealLuigi - 5/9/2014, 5:19 PM
I love the Deus Ex: Human Revolution soundtrack. Makes me really hope that they bring that composer on for the live action movie in the works
BANE5000 - 5/9/2014, 5:20 PM
If ever the film is made, get Daft Punk to do the soundtrack :]
Swiftsword777 - 5/9/2014, 5:22 PM
Nice, I really wish we could get a live action done right but that is probably the closest we are ever going to get.
Ranger14 - 5/9/2014, 5:33 PM
This has to be one of the first fan film trailers I have seen that actually impressed me.
Enphlieuwince - 5/9/2014, 5:34 PM
Yeah, they've earned my subscription.

McGee - 5/9/2014, 5:43 PM
Akira is great. So is Mask of the Phantasm ...which I'll be watching on the big screen tonight in LA. F*ck you guys.
InfiniteMonkey - 5/9/2014, 5:44 PM
Hollywood ain't got shit!

Tetsuo as a white guy! LMAO!

I'm glad it failed. This is how you do it mates, or an idea of it keeping the underlying theme grit.
astromerc - 5/9/2014, 5:50 PM
Okay so that was pretty cool.
wbrowning79 - 5/9/2014, 5:53 PM
It's good. I mean really good. A few months ago there was some concept art for this movie. I did like a 3 paragraph comment saying how it seemed like the concept artist was probably the only part of the creative team who know what the hell they were doing. While that may be true...
This was great...
I read the manga and watched the anime what seems like 100 times and then some I even have Kanedas jaket for [frick] sake. And then I see the cancelation of the warner bros remake. And then I see this...
Absolutially brilliant. It was a fan dream come true and I am very happy right now.
Warner bros I'm talking to you now so listen up of your reading these comments.
We want this.
Not Caucasians.
No brothers.
No obsqure random jobs like bartending or whatever garbage you came up for Kaneda...
We want this. And also this is fan made. I can promise you that if I had to make a choice and had to sit through a whole trillogy of what you guys were plannin vs this beautifully crafted fan film which one do you think I would pick? That's right...
If I can go on and on and on and praise a somewhat low budget 5 minute fan film and would not even think of going to see your film that we haven't even seen a poster for yet. Than clearly you are doing something wrong and should wither be fired or you should take notes. If you do not want to keep the fans happy so as for less people can go see your film thereby getting very low rattings and therefore not allot of money will you be making and therefore loose your job because apparently you couldn't do it which is making money. Go ahead then. Do it. But if you don't want to get fired.
Take notes. Follow this incredibly crafted example.
And maybe if we find out (the fans of he manga and the anime). Have respected exactly that. Maybe we'll go see it. It won t d be a piece of shit. And you can have your money.
Because again: that's clearly what you care about don't you:
If fans can follow the books and the film more than a company who makes a profit off of non independent films then What's stopping you. Who is he moron who keeps coming up with all of these strange out of this planet ridiculous ideas for a script written by a mental patient. And who is saying yes to them and going with them and put them in these films.
GetsugaTensho22 - 5/9/2014, 6:02 PM
Great work considering it's a fan-made project!

But it's nothing a studio couldn't do better. Fans have an overbloated sense of self-worth. So what if they wanted Garret Hedlund for Kaneda? You people are so superficial. It's all about bragging rights. "Oh look at me, i watch japanese stuff so i'm better than you! DON'T CHANGE MY JAPANESE CHARACTER TO ANYTHING ELSE OR I WON'T BE ABLE TO BRAG ABOUT IT! WAAAH WAHH WAAAH!!"
marvel72 - 5/9/2014, 6:11 PM
guys have you seen this trailer? i saw it for the first time today its pretty f*cked up but worth a look.

"There is alive version of Akira, its call Chronicle."

Pretty much this.
LEEE777 - 5/9/2014, 6:37 PM
The sad thing is WB has made awesome comic to movie films, WATCHMEN, TDK...

They have the power to do it, just don't let all the suits take over!

Sweeet VID!
MightyZeus - 5/9/2014, 6:38 PM
I actually liked it. I thought it was pretty good.

I especially loved the end credits.

Dare we dream this come true? There's a Akira movie right there. Damn!!!! That was good. Made me wish it was the real thing. Makes me think Akira should be a Japanese made venture or a joint project. Keep the actors they got for this clip. They are just perfect for their parts. Guillermo Del Toro or Gareth Edwards could handle this shit easy peezy. As long as the characters and the locations don't change. Keep it in Neo Tokyo.
SunfireUrA55 - 5/9/2014, 8:34 PM
Well you can't have those Asians rule the sci-fi movies genre too. They need to JUST STICK TO Martial arts films, so lets just hire all White people to fill up all of the roles oh and instead of Tokyo, lets just call it…um…New York. Yeah that's it! Oh and instead of calling Akira, Let's just go with "BOB."
KIDDSOUL - 5/9/2014, 8:38 PM
@FarkinA "Guillermo Del Toro or Gareth Edwards could handle this shit easy peezy."

yonny616 - 5/9/2014, 8:41 PM
meh. I can't see what all the fuss is about.
Marxman12 - 5/9/2014, 8:42 PM
What about Uwe Bowell?

Tevii - 5/9/2014, 8:50 PM
NICE! I would love to be a part of that project...

This is what i made with what was available to me. But if i had money it would definitely have the asian cast too.
