Edgar Wright Talks About The Process Of Bringing ANT-MAN To The Silver Screen

Edgar Wright reveals just exactly how many drafts have been written and touches on the fan perception surrounding the difficulties of getting the project off the ground.

It's no secret that Ant-Man has had a long and tenuous development track and with a good opportunity for introduction now passed in Marvel's The Avengers, many fans have been wondering if we'll ever get an Ant-Man movie. Well, recently it was revealed that Wright shot a test reel for Ant-Man and there's been rumblings [please have salt at the ready] that the end credit scene in Iron Man 3 could finally lead to Edgar Wright's film. With all that in mind, Wright shared the following thoughts on the whole, seemingly frustrating process---

On the development of Ant-Man:
WRIGHT: The development process is something that has so many elements to it and that doesn't mean that you're writing every day. In fact me and Joe Cornish wrote a script (for Ant-Man) last year and we haven't done any work on it since, because they're happy with it, we're happy with it, we're dealing with other elements of it now, so I might be doing another film first, y'know.

What are these other elements? Is it scheduling? Or maybe procuring a lead actor?

On the numerous reports on the difficulties of the project:
WRIGHT: It's funny where its that thing in news stories where people say 'Joe Cornish and Edgar Wright have been writing this film for yeeeears,' and it's true and not true, we've done like three drafts of the script and we've got to a place where we're happy with it and so is everyone else, and now it's a question of when is that slot to make it?"

On the assumption that the issues with getting Ant-Man off the ground were solely resultant of script issues:
WRIGHT: "People assume if something's been in development for years there must be some kind of problem or something that we're desperately trying to fix, and that's not necessarily the case because you work on different things at different times."

"I think that what people don't really understand in terms of movies -- especially when film sites do hourly news -- is how many years it can take for a film to come together. Even Shaun of the Dead took four years to reach the screen."

Only time will tell. Fans are hoping that footage from Wright's test reel is revealed at this year's Comic-Con which is going on now. It could be shown during one of Hall H's Trailer Park panels or during the Iron Man 3 panel Saturday. As always, we'll have any news for you if/when it drops.

I want an answer to the question:

Will he actually be referred to as Ant-man or one of his other monikers?
ksommer - 7/12/2012, 8:42 AM
Now we play the waiting game........
Minato - 7/12/2012, 8:45 AM
Does anyone really want antman or do we want ultron and don't wanna mess with his origin?
MarkJulian - 7/12/2012, 8:46 AM
@Natrag You clearly didn't read the article and are the very thing Wright is talking about.
RamonSuarez - 7/12/2012, 8:48 AM
I can't wait for Antman to come out. I think its going to be a terrific film.
thewolfx - 7/12/2012, 8:50 AM
for once i agree wit truderboy

antman better be in avengers 2
Minato - 7/12/2012, 8:50 AM
"I think that what people don't really understand in terms of movies -- especially when film sites do hourly news -- is how many years it can take for a film to come together. Even Shaun of the Dead took four years to reach the screen."

But theres been like 6 marvel studio films already. You can't blame the studio they are dropping them like octo-mom over there.
RamonSuarez - 7/12/2012, 8:52 AM

And that is not always a good thing. Rushing a project like Marvel does can occasionally lead to a situation where we get an ill-formed piece of shit like Iron Man 2.
GodzillaKart - 7/12/2012, 8:58 AM
My God. People on this site have the logic and patience of a hungry baby.
YOUNGBL00D - 7/12/2012, 8:58 AM
" we're working with other elements of it right now, so I might be doing another film first" why, isn't this enough, why can't they just finish this up real fast, how long do they want to wake.
Ceejay - 7/12/2012, 8:58 AM
Antman and Wasp are the two Avengers best left from the live action version of the film, they will start it down the road of cheese.
ATrueHero1987 - 7/12/2012, 9:01 AM
I want Kang to be in one of the future Avengers movies!
IgnurRant - 7/12/2012, 9:02 AM
i really hope this is not an action-comedy. Hank Pym deserves better
BrowniesExplode - 7/12/2012, 9:04 AM
Truth is he's been working on other projects and if and when this movie takes off it has to be good no screw ups in the marvel cinematic universe *cough captain america cough*
IgnurRant - 7/12/2012, 9:06 AM
Sketched out a story for Hank Pym.

It dealt with Hank being frustrated that "Ant-Man" was deemed imadequate for the Avengers Intiative. Frustrated that Jane was accepted but turned down the offer out of loyalty and pity for Hank. Hank would have seen where he pitches Ultrom to SHIELD for funding, but comes off to desperate and is ultimately declined, despite the fact Fury sees the possibilities im Ultrom. The movie would focus mostly on Hank trying to perfect the Giant Man formula and break 60 feet.

"My God. People on this site have the logic and patience of a hungry baby."

OK What is a suitable timespan too get a movie done? How long have they been working on this one?

"And that is not always a good thing. Rushing a project like Marvel does can occasionally lead to a situation where we get an ill-formed piece of shit like Iron Man 2"

I don't think I'm rushing it if you have a script and director then start talking about making something else. It seems they are not serious about this movie and thats ok with me. I want a Black Panther movie more anyway.
MarkJulian - 7/12/2012, 9:09 AM
@Intruder I saw that Avengers: EMH's episode too. :P
mawilli4 - 7/12/2012, 9:17 AM
I don't care either way as long as I get Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova sometime too!
ksommer - 7/12/2012, 9:18 AM
I'm okay not getting an Ant-Man film. Put him in the Shield movie and make him in Avengers 2. After all of that, this movie might be ready.
xcrementus - 7/12/2012, 9:23 AM
Hows about...

Hank develops the Antman suit/formula for SHIELD...Scott Lang steals it (which is what Edgar Wright has mentioned many many times is a story element)...AIM wants it too (AIM will be in IM3, which sets up a nice little connection, maybe even the bonus scene). So Scott is on the run, with both SHIELD and AIM fighting him and each other for the suit, till he finally does the right thing and punches AIM in the face.

Or kisses Monica Rappaccini's face. or both preferably.
xcrementus - 7/12/2012, 9:24 AM
I expect, if that's the case, AIM will kidnap his daughter, and he'll infiltrate their installation to get her back.
xcrementus - 7/12/2012, 9:25 AM
Keep in mind, this doesn't have to be a franchise movie ala Cap/Thor...one big Ant Man movie, make a little money, and then afterwards you can bring in Pym as a SHIELD scientist for later movies. easy peasy.
FireKnightRises - 7/12/2012, 9:26 AM
when the hell they gonna make this
c'mon man, I thought they will released it in 2014?
RamonSuarez - 7/12/2012, 9:30 AM

You're missing the timeline here and how complicated it is to make this work in a cinematic universe where careful planning is essential. Wright and Cornish came up with the final draft a year ago when the Avengers project was about to begin. They couldn't very well start filming because it wouldn't have fit with what Marvel had already set into place. Now that that the Avengers is a hit, Wright is waiting for the go-ahead from Feige while he begins planning the second phase of the MCU. All of this is while Wright pursues other projects.
xcrementus - 7/12/2012, 9:33 AM
Janet is the worst character ever.
All she does is complain, flirt, and get punched in the face by Hank.
In Secret Wars she called Magneto a Nazi. WHAT AN INSEnSITIVE WHORE!!
And Hank isn't really that much better...
"i'll get the Avengers to like me by building a robot to attack them, that only i can defeat!" so heroic.

Scott Lang, on the other hand, is the man. And he's the only actual living Antman in the books atm. You know marvel loves their synergy!
BrowniesExplode - 7/12/2012, 9:34 AM
@ RamonSuarez ant man is phase one o think ant man is going to squeeze in before the first iron man or before thor because selvig did sent hank an email in thor
FireKnightRises - 7/12/2012, 9:38 AM
seconded that, stand alone antman!
xcrementus - 7/12/2012, 9:43 AM
@Marvelpsycho79...my main thinking behind it is that Antman/Giant Man doesn't really have a great rogues gallery. Egghead and Whirlwind are both boring goofy villains.

At least if they're up against AIM, it'll be a high-tech battle of wits.
Which is even better if Scott Lang is in their, the blue collar, single parent, electronics expert.
He steals the suit, then he learns his lesson and saves his little girl. And in the end, you have elements for Avengers, eg Pym, Ultron.

I don't want Pym as the main character, because
a) Hank Pym doesn't really have that many interesting classic stories to tell (besides beating Jan, and they can't use that).
and b)Wasp is just an annoying female copy of Antman with wings. When she died in Secret Invasion...I think i heard tumbleweeds.
They have half a personality between them. And it's certainly not as classically heroic as Thor/Cap etc.

Scott Lang at least has his kid to protect, the Avengers needs an everyman character that people can relate to.
BrowniesExplode - 7/12/2012, 9:47 AM
@marvelpsycho i disagree marvel doesn't do characters justice like vanko in iron man 2 or red skull in captain america
TheMalcontent - 7/12/2012, 9:51 AM
I don't care what name he goes by. All I care about that it is a Hank Pym story and is taken seriously.

I give a damn about Scott Lang nor do I care is he is funny. The power of the Pym particles should be about Hank Pym!

Scott has no(not even one) important or even relevant contribution to the MU as whole. I do enjoy some of his personal stories. However just because he has at times joined the Avengers does not make him relevant.

Hank Pym in a much deeper and complex character that can last on film. To also add to character he is creator Ultron who is constant foe of the Avengers, who then creates Vison who a main member of the Avengers.

Hank Pym is also easily one of the smartest in MU and the Avengers right beside the likes of Tony and above character like Banner.

Scott Lang is overly simplistic for character who can be entertaining but I could not see many sequels for long lasting franchise.
Guerillas - 7/12/2012, 9:54 AM
I just think that Marvel is scared of making an ant-man film, don´t think that the blame is fully on Wright.
xcrementus - 7/12/2012, 10:01 AM
Hank beat his wife.
Hank tried to attack the Avengers.
Hank has changed his personality/costume/identiy about 4000 times.
Hank hasn't had a solo series since the 60's.
Hank has a girlfriend who is so terribly self-centered and irritating. Who has no interest in science, just clothes.
Hank does it with robots who look like his dead girlfriend.
Hank tried to get Loki to join the Avengers.
Hank let Jan whore around in London.
Hank was replaced by a Skrull, cus he was the most unstable and nobody would notice changes in personality.
Hank built a robot that is one of the deadliest weapons ever. And lost control of it.
Why does anybody want him to be the star of a movie again?
I'm for an Antman movie, it'd be fresh and visually stunning...But I'm really against Pym as a team member. Even in the cartoons he became a douchebag!!!?!?!
gambgel - 7/12/2012, 10:14 AM
Its pretty clear what Edgar is talking about.

The script is done. Its MARVEL decision to give it the green light.

They havent done it yet probably because they want the sequels to Thor, Cap and Ironman first, so once all are done, Marvel will star the new phase of this franchise, with the next avengers.

Lets hope this weekends brings big news for the fans of the other heroes.
niknik - 7/12/2012, 10:19 AM
Should have been in the Avengers film. Take out all the worthless crap dialog and scenes with Hawkeye and Black Widow and replace them with the Pyms as shield scientists on the helicarrier, showing in the first act his breakthrough with Pym particals and shrinking (and Stark making some smart ass remark), and then in the last act with him big as a house kicking ass and saving Starks butt.

That's how it should have went down.

@ xcrementus - you've been reading too much ultimates and recent storylines. Go back to the 60's and 70's when all these characters were fresh and he was every bit as much a hero as any other Avenger. Yeah he had a freakout that lead to him becoming Yellowjacket in the early 70's but that was cleaned up by the end of that one issue. That's where his character should start in the cinematic universe as well. Not with the douchebag from the Ultimate universe. They're all douchebags in that universe, even Cap. At least in the 616 he is a much better person.

TheMalcontent - 7/12/2012, 10:19 AM
@xcrementus I strongly dis-agree. I do agree that Wasp is annoying and a complainer though.

Hank did not create Ultron purposely as a foe. He originaly didn't even know that created Ultron to think for himself. When Ultron was activated was way smarter Pym could have known because he used his own brain pattern for Utron's AI and Ultron created devise to erase Hanks memories of even of him making Ultron to be smart using his own brain pattern. Very weird actually.

One of the reason Ultron is so cool is the fact that he is like Hank Pym if he used his brain/smarts for evil.

You are right that Hank is some times also a jerk. But he as some deep issue that he had to strugle with later in his comics mentally. Some because Ulron had played with his brain.

You say the same with most Marvels character(about being jerks at times) like Tony Starks, Fury, Hawkeye, Thor or Wolverine and even the friendly neighborhood Spider-man.

It give them a bit of character. You know trying to fight and over come their natural jerk like behavior. You know as struggling human beings.
BrowniesExplode - 7/12/2012, 10:24 AM
@MARVELPSYCHO79 yep ur right maybe skull is surtur or maybe he went straight to asgard
xcrementus - 7/12/2012, 10:25 AM
I'm just trying to think of this from a publishing stand-point as well though.
Marvel can't make a big push for Hank Pym when a movie rolls around. Cus its just Hank Pym, and the damage has been done to his character already.
But I keep thinking theres a reason behind them bringing Scott Lang back, and sticking him on the Defenders as Antman.
I see ducks being aligned, that's all.
They can do a better job right now of pushing Lang as Antman, instead of Pym.
I still think theres a place for both of them in the film, so does Wright. Just not as the #1 lead though.
TheMalcontent - 7/12/2012, 10:25 AM
@xcrementus Stop reading the ultimates and we both know that most of the recent and modern stories suck.

Why would we want to make a story/movie of the worst parts of a character's story that has been going on for 50 years straight?

The same things could be said with every marvel character.
Ha1frican - 7/12/2012, 10:31 AM
basically he has been busy and Marvel hasn't had a slot for them with all their other films. THis happens all the time but it is usually kept secret so it seems like other deals go faster.
