Louis D'Esposito On ANT-MAN, Edgar Wright's Test Reel & When To Expect IRON MAN 3 Trailer

Louis D'Esposito On ANT-MAN, Edgar Wright's Test Reel & When To Expect IRON MAN 3 Trailer

In addition to what's mentioned in the headline, Marvel Studios' co-president Louis D'Esposito also talks about Marvel one-shots introducing superheros, as well if Phase 2 will include Ant-Man!

Under promotional duties for Marvel's The Avengers Blu-ray and DVD release, the Marvel co-president, Louis D'Esposito, discussed the studios' forthcoming projects with FilmJunkies.de. He dots on future Marvel one-shots, when fans can expect Shane Black's theatrical Iron Man 3 trailer, director Edgar Wright's Ant-Man test reel from Comic-Con, and where the Ant-Man movie will fit on the studios' upcoming slate, among other things.

When asked about Wright's Ant-Man test reel, and whether it'd be available for everyone to see, D'Esposito reasurred, “Yes, I think so. Edgar is just adding the finishing touches and then we will once again make the final visual effects editing. The process is almost complete. Then we will decide when and how we can make it available to the fans. We are more than happy with it. He's a great filmmaker and we look forward to.”

D'Esposito continued, “I was there when he made the test reel. I now know how it works and it's going very methodical and planned. First, he designed the concept, then the storyboard, then he produced an animatic, so he knows exactly what he'll turn. Every morning we visited him, and he had added new material, which we then looked at together. He is a passionate filmmaker and it that's contagious. We've only looked at it yesterday and every time we see it, then we think, ‘Wow! We can not wait to make this film!’”

On the subject of the actual Ant-Man film, which is rumored to begin filming next year after director Edgar Wright completes At World's End, the interviewer then asked D'Esposito if the tiny hero will fit into Marvel's “Phase 2” slate, in which he replied, “I'm not sure, so I can not make a definitive statement. Once we know the more accurate schedule, we will make this announcement publicly.”

Along with the Ant-Man test reel, the very first footage from Iron Man 3 was also shown at comic-con this year. And regarding when a theatrical trailer will be released, D'Esposito says, “I [don't?] have the exact date...it's just not ready. But I think it is mid to late October, you can watch a first teaser trailer.”

Later in the Q&A, Louis D'Esposito discussed the Item 47 Marvel one-shot, in which he directed. And when asked if future short films are planned, he said, “We do not know exactly what they will be. Only, I will stage one of the short films and we are looking for a guest-director for the other. We are just in the development process. I currently have about 15 different concepts to be on my desk. And this part is nerve-wracking. We ask ourselves, who will continue the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or which one is suitable, the fans or the moviegoers best. We sit together as a group and try to select and then choose one with which we try. I have to decide by next month.”

Before the Agent Coulson-centric one-shots debuted, it was previously rumored that the short films would actually introduce lesser-known Marvel heroes. And when the interviewer brought up that possibility in future shorts, namely with Black Panther, D'Esposito said, “I love Black Panther, he is one of my favorite characters. But before we have a filmmaker on board, it is difficult to do anything. Because we want to involve them in the processes such as casting or design issues or even other areas for which one hires a director.” He continues, “So if we have a director on board and knew that we would turn Black Panther or Luke Cage and Ms. Marvel or whatever for a figure that is, then we would do maybe. But right now it is logistically a difficult hurdle.”

In addition to “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel on May 1, 2015, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014.

7166charlie - 9/17/2012, 10:02 AM
sounds to me like ant man will tie into phase 2 in my opinion, i do hope so i cant wait to see him on the big screen
Kiltman - 9/17/2012, 10:03 AM
I'm guessing they'll ship the trailer as an apple/iTunes exclusive like they did the Avengers, instead of attaching it to any one particular movie.

Can't wait to see the Ant-Man footage, I think it's smart to release it to try and win over people who doubt the concept.
HULK2099 - 9/17/2012, 10:26 AM
Oh man ! I cannot wait!
AC1 - 9/17/2012, 10:31 AM
@DAFIRG not sure about Iron Man, since it's Disney and The Hobbit is WB, but you might be right about Man Of Steel. There again, I guess we could end up with both... or neither!
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 9/17/2012, 10:32 AM
Late October? F this shit I want it now!
marvel72 - 9/17/2012, 10:32 AM
MARVEL RULES! by the sound of things phase 2 will be better than phase 1 & phase 1 was very good.
FoxForce5 - 9/17/2012, 10:44 AM
There ARE ways to introduce lesser known characters in the one shots without a set actor or director -

Any character that wears a mask can be made with no problem just like Wright did with the Ant-Man test footage. I'm sure a character like Moon Knight would work real well and be a great way to test the audience reaction.
Kayo - 9/17/2012, 10:52 AM
Phase 2 baby!
soberchimera - 9/17/2012, 10:59 AM
Mid-October really? If they want IM3 to make to near as much money as The Avengers they should start hyping it as soon as possible especially if the trailer is already assemble. But they'll probably release it with Skyfall.
Matfin93 - 9/17/2012, 11:04 AM
Acira, Dark knight trailer was attatched to many films what wasn't distributed by the same company
Imasuperhero - 9/17/2012, 11:16 AM
I got a feeling the Ant-man test footage is going to be released on the now delayed Marvel set. (Suitcase)
Ha1frican - 9/17/2012, 11:21 AM

PersonaPostOvo - 9/17/2012, 11:26 AM

CharlesLord - 9/17/2012, 11:26 AM

126thst - 9/17/2012, 11:28 AM

On the subject of the actual Ant-Man film: "I'm not sure, so I can not make a definitive statement"

Regarding when a theatrical trailer will be released (IM3): “I don't have the exact date"

Item 47 Marvel one-shot, in which he directed. And when asked if future short films are planned, he said, “We do not know exactly what they will be."

- Thanks for the insight, really informative..
126thst - 9/17/2012, 11:28 AM
I could be interpreting this wrong, but is this guy saying they can make money off Ant-Man, but not Black Panther??
siggisuperman - 9/17/2012, 11:31 AM
Kyle Chandler actually looks good for Star Lord
polarkyle - 9/17/2012, 12:10 PM
yes october is only next month. still shocked how he still haven't seen a star trek 2 trailer
Turtlestrong - 9/17/2012, 12:18 PM
Ah yes, it becomes all of the sudden difficult and hard and a hurdle to over come once Black Panther is mentioned.

Oh well, maybe by time i'm 50 years old in 2037 they will finally be around to at least doing a short film about Black Panther! lol
tazmaniak - 9/17/2012, 12:31 PM

When he says it's a difficult hurdle regarding Black Panther, Luke Cage and Ms. Marvel, he's referring to how mainstream audiences (as we've seen in the past) haven't been receptive to films with a black lead, a predominately black cast or a female lead.

These movies need a significant budget and it's not definite you would see a return on them. Historically, if a big budget or action movie with a black or female lead doesn't have a big star in the main role, it's not even going to get near $100M.

It sucks, but that's people for you.
Avengers2012 - 9/17/2012, 12:43 PM
I can't wait for the Ant-Man footage! So excited for this film. I think Wright will do an amazing job. Now just please, please, please make Simon Baker Ant-Man. That would be spectacular.
niknik - 9/17/2012, 12:43 PM
Whedon F-ed up. Ant-Man should have been phase one and a founding member of the Avengers. Black Widow did nothing for that film.
soberchimera - 9/17/2012, 12:57 PM
Blade I & II made over 220 million at the box office. Black lead.

The Hunger Games alone made over 600 million. Female lead.

Please do some research first or stfu.

TheAbomination - 9/17/2012, 1:24 PM
Awesome news here. Can't wait to see the Ant-Man test footage. I expect this Iron Man 3 teaser to be amazing. And I hope we get a Black Panther movie by Phase 3. LET'S GO MARVEL!!
Dunejedi - 9/17/2012, 1:49 PM
Interviewer: Can we see the Ant-Man test footage?
D'Esposito: Yes.
I: When?
D: I don't know.
I: Will Ant-Man be part of "Phase 2"?
D: I don't know.
I: When will the Iron Man 3 trailer be released?
D: I don't know.
I: Any more ideas for short films like Item 47?
D: I don't know. I mean, yes.
I: Any truth to the rumor that you'll use the shorts to introduce lesser-known heroes like Black Panther?
D: I love Black Panther.
I: Can you tell us anything specific?
D: I pooped today!

Great scoop, DCMarvelFreshman. A 500 word article in which NOTHING was cleared up.
Superheromovies2000 - 9/17/2012, 2:08 PM
So a movie that comes out in June doesn't have a teaser ready? I have to wonder how rushed was the comic-con footage?!!
IronGinger76 - 9/17/2012, 2:16 PM
that was very informative

Late October? That's to long of a wait for me...

toco89 - 9/17/2012, 4:52 PM

You miight wanna add Blade 3, Catoman and Elektra to that list just to balance it out.

Spawn was unforgettable, because of the special effects. Now if Denzel had done it...
mgeoff88 - 9/17/2012, 5:27 PM
[frick] Yeah! I can't wait for the Ant-Man footage and IM3 trailer!

@Darlene1974 I completely agree about there needing to be more female superheroes! I hope Ms. Marvel joins The Avengers team in the sequel. And of course Wasp too.

I would love to see a Ms. Marvel movie! But you can't just chalk it up to them being sexist. Movie studios are hesitant about doing solo female superhero movies, because of past failures, which is a huge shame!

@hawkeye2012 October will be here before you know it. :)
inkslinger616 - 9/17/2012, 8:30 PM
I want to see Hank Pym beat Janet Van Dyne and get his ass whipped by Cap in Avengers 3.
ChemicalGhost - 9/17/2012, 11:25 PM
I feel that Ant-Man should be a Marvel One-Shot and Dr. Strange and Black Panther be full length movies. Luke Cage and Iron Fist in a One Shot as well
Guerillas - 9/17/2012, 11:29 PM
Would be so cool if they showed short films before the coming marvel movies in the theaters!
EarOne - 9/18/2012, 12:28 AM

now THAT sounds much better than what he said before being Black Panther's a tough movie to crack cuz Wakanda poses too much of a challenge to do, even though they already created Asgard very well.
Logan5 - 9/18/2012, 8:25 AM
I'm glad they are taking their time with Panther. You don't want to just shoehorn him into the Avengers or bust out a sub par solo film.

I'm still stumped how people don't see the potential a solo Pym film has at being unique, kick ass and an easy addition to the cast in the next Avengers movie.

Chandler would be amazing as Star-Lord! He, the kids & the first two acts were the only thing worth it for me in Super 8. Not sure why Fillion is playing hard to get with this GOTG. :P
Logan5 - 9/18/2012, 8:42 AM

Totally & I like Scarlett..., especially when she busts into a good film for the right reasons: Ghost World, Lost in Translation, etc.

That was not a jab @Avengers, it's just that you could have removed Hawkeye or Black Widow and it would still worked, probably even better. If she did not show back up until Avengers 2, you'd have audiences wondering where Widow has been since Iron Man 2. All of this being said with the notion that she exited Iron Man 2 in the proper manner to make her absent from the Avengers. Or leave Hawkeye out until the sequel. Either way we now have a subplot that could be melodramatically remedied too efficiently/poorly in a sequel or maybe the two will get their own movie. This should be a big piece of the S.H.I.E.L.D movie.., oh wait that's a tv show now, soo...
tazmaniak - 9/18/2012, 8:38 PM
@soberchimera61, read what I wrote again. I said a movie with a black lead wouldn't come near $100M unless it had a big star in the main role. Wesley Snipes was a big star at that time.

I said "historically", an action film with a female lead, who wasn't a big star, wouldn't come near $100M. You can't refute that by naming only one film to do that, not to mention a film that stars a critically acclaimed up-and-coming actress, that's based on a huge series of novels, as well as one that just came out this year.

Can you name multiple action films with a black or female lead, who wasn't a big star, that was successful?
bemond - 10/11/2012, 3:46 PM
Ant Man?????? FML...... Better have Murdock in phase two or ELSE!!!!!!!!! (peers into soul)
