AVENGERS 2: First Comments From Joss Whedon On Casting James Spader As Ultron

Joss Whedon gives exclusive first comments on casting James Spader as Ultron to Marvel, revealing that the Lincoln actor was his "first and only choice" for the role. He also says Spader's voice can be "eerily calm and compelling", while also being very "human and humorous"..

In The Avengers: Age of Ultron Loki is gone and the new villain will be the evil robot Ultron, who has the ability to keep upgrading his own strength, making him extremely fearsome. Tony Stark/Iron Man becomes the unwitting creator of Ultron. The brother-and-sister team of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch become the seventh and eighth members of The Avengers. Quicksilver has extreme speed, while Scarlet Witch can cast spells and has telekinesis ability. Black Widow and Hawkeye will be key figures in the film.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters on May 1, 2015.

Looking forward to see how it all goes down/ends !

So, Tony DOES create Ultron? Or are you just assuming?
TelaVizion - 9/11/2013, 9:03 AM

What does he say? It doesn't show up on my phone.
l0rdleg0las - 9/11/2013, 10:02 AM
Dammit! I wish we could get less of the Hawkeye and Widow and more of the actual Avengers that matter. Cap and Thor got screwed last time around, that needs to be rectified this time.
MatTaylorX - 9/11/2013, 10:03 AM
Meh? I'd love to know what you do with your life OldGreg. Very little I imagine.
Geotheleo - 9/11/2013, 10:05 AM
What's it is sayyyyyyyy? My phone is lame
manofmidgard - 9/11/2013, 10:08 AM
I like spader for this but that just confused me.
calm. compelling. warm. humorous.
this doesn't sound like the key things I would look for when looking for the perfect ultron.
i'd go more for: violent, sinister, cold, scary, creepy, and insane.
ah well, i'm sure whedon knows what he's about. sounds odd though.
ParisSun - 9/11/2013, 10:18 AM

I believe what you are looking for in Ultron is someone with a calm and matter of fact tone deliver lines about destruction of millions of humans. But don't let him fool you, he's as crazy as a loon. Expect to hear "submit or die" in a way that only James Spader can deliver.

Btw, Blacklist is one of my most anticipated new shows this fall. Might be the best action/thriller on tv since 24.
anthonyEstark - 9/11/2013, 10:19 AM
@batz Ok thanks, but that made no sense at all.
NightmareB4 - 9/11/2013, 10:29 AM
@parissun Agreed about Spader immense talent and potential, and about Blacklist. I always love how someone is judged by who they are as opposed to their acting ability.

Side note, can't wait to see my good friend Jamie battle Spader in the Blacklist pilot.
MercwithMouth - 9/11/2013, 10:33 AM
Spader is gonna crush it as Ultron.

Having a calm voice will be awesome.

Remember Hopkins as Lecter? Never did he raise his voice, but he was the most terrifying villian EVER.

Hopefully Spader can tap into something like that.
And yes, Blacklist looks awesome.
sexfoodcomics - 9/11/2013, 10:34 AM
Spacer is actually going it be in the movie as Ultron. I bet they do an android version of Ultron alla terminator style.
DCMarvelFreshman - 9/11/2013, 10:41 AM
Great find RaphaelCBM! Mind adding a transcription?
soforizo - 9/11/2013, 10:47 AM
Spader's voice can be "eerily calm and compelling", while also being very "human and humorous"

That last bit is not the first words that come to mind when I think of Ultron, but we'll see what actually comes out of this.

I still don't see why they couldn't put in Hank Pym and Wasp, instead of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch? A2 would have a perfect setup had they gone that route.
MercwithMouth - 9/11/2013, 10:48 AM

From what I've heard, should be just voice and mo-cap. Hopefully Ultron is full CGI, which I expect. Shouldn't be any android crap.
TheWolverine08 - 9/11/2013, 10:49 AM
Are people still complaining about Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch being in the movie?
MercwithMouth - 9/11/2013, 10:52 AM

Apparently so... Ant-Man fans can't get over it.
Logan5 - 9/11/2013, 11:06 AM
It was the zero gravity sex scene with Angela Bassett from SuperNova that got him the gig.., loads of wire work experience and all.
soforizo - 9/11/2013, 11:12 AM
Everyone doesn't have to be Marvel's b'ch.
soforizo - 9/11/2013, 11:22 AM
Btw, I don't have much of a problem with Quicksilver and Scarlet being in the film per se, but in those being left out despite being more relevant to Ultron.
ThePowerCosmic - 9/11/2013, 11:32 AM
I love how the DC trolls act like they even care if Pym was in this or not. They would hate on something else if Pym Was in it. Quick to point the finger at something different from the comics, but makes more sense in the movie universe.

Just worry about your Flash tv show and GTFO!

BrowniesExplode - 9/11/2013, 11:34 AM
I bet this movie gonna have a twist in it. I believe it will be that tony didn't created ultron its going to be hank. Then everyone gonna ask who is hank and that question leads to the ant-man film.
MarkV - 9/11/2013, 11:42 AM
I think it's a fair complaint to be disappointed that Hank Pym is not in this movie.

I mean it is called "Age of Ultron" and you know, Hank originally kinda built Ultron in the original storyline.

Power Cosmic, do you even Marvel?

Avenger79 - 9/11/2013, 11:47 AM
Take this for what you will but the synopsis on imdb says "As the US Government create a force, known as Ultron, The Avengers are told they are not needed any longer. But when Ultron turns against Humanity, it's time for The Avengers to assemble yet again for their most dangerous challenge ever. -- IMDb Plot: The Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)"
soforizo - 9/11/2013, 11:50 AM

It's called planning, Edgar Wright has been on the sidelines long before this. The movie itself was moved up months ahead to a summer release, how hard is it to have the guy cameo in Avengers as a scientist?

Pym was great in other action mediums, like Ultimate Avengers and Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Thank you

I wouldn't mind that, but it wouldn't be hard to have him in a small cameo. None of those films are being filmed right now.

Argetlam22 - 9/11/2013, 11:55 AM
"Human and humorous"

Huh? Ultron is an artificial super-villain. Calm and compelling, I agree with. Machines are not emotional, and a super-villain should be compelling in a creepy sort of way. But human? That word shouldn't even be in the same sentence as Ultron - unless the word "shouldn't" is also in that sentence. See what I did there? :P
TheWolverine08 - 9/11/2013, 12:06 PM
@soforizo Didn't say you have to be "Marvel's bitch". I'm Quicksilver fan so I'm happy about this, and he and his sister have been Avengers so it's cool. Plus, I think Marvel wants to flesh out Pym in his own sol movie instead of dumping him in the mix in Avengers 2.
soforizo - 9/11/2013, 12:07 PM

I agree that no one cares about Hank Pym, but that's precisely why would be a genius move plus a better adaptation. Introducing Pym in Avengers (not in some after-credits scene) would help Ant-Man.

About your point concerning him being guilty. I'd be open to have Tony Stark tinkering mess up Pym's Ultron design. Problem solved.
soforizo - 9/11/2013, 12:15 PM

I got nothing against Quicksilver himself. I just don't see how at least having Hank Pym cameo would necessarily be catastrophic for the character or his movie. I'd argue otherwise.
soforizo - 9/11/2013, 12:18 PM

Emotional impact could be created another way, plus if you really wanted to have Tony in there, you could put them both working on it. Have Tony be the one programming the things that leads Ultron astray.
soforizo - 9/11/2013, 12:46 PM

I like your general response, though I think you're over-dramatizing the effects it would have on Ant-Man. I think if done right it will actually help it... Anyways, we'll see what comes out of this.
soforizo - 9/11/2013, 1:18 PM

It was for the MOS trolling on an A2 story, but thanks for the good wishes. Would love to be paid handsomely under that scenario, as long as I get to keep the money.
ConquerorKang27 - 9/11/2013, 1:30 PM
All you Spader doubters, check out this fall's Blacklist before you condemn. It will most likely change some minds.
