Joss Whedon On Scarlett Johansson's Pregnancy And More In AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

In addition to Aaron Taylor-Johnson's thoughts on Quicksilver, and Robert Downey Jr. on The Vision, the full Entertainment Weekly article has Joss Whedon discuss Scarlett Johansson's baby bump!

After revealing the first Avengers: Age of Ultron images and plot details, Entertainment Weekly has now fully released its new San Diego Comic-Con preview issue, and it reveals even more tidbits about the highly-anticipated Marvel sequel. First, it's confirmed that the Maximoff twins, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, who Joss Whedon considers part of 'Team Ultron,' are orphan castoffs with a "firey hate" for Earth's Mightiest Heroes. "He's quick-tempored. He gets agitated. He's impatient. But he's super-protective," says Aaron Taylor-Johnson of his speedster character. "He had to become a father figure to his twin sister. He's physical and she's psychological. It's kind of them against the world." Elizabeth Olsen says of her telekinesis-harnessing character, "It's not that she's insane, it's just that she's overly stimulated."

Joss Whedon then reveals a fourth "Team Ultron" member in the Vision, who the director confirms that having Paul Bettany, the voice actor behind Tony Stark's artificial intelligence J.A.R.V.I.S., portray in Avengers: Age of Ultron is no coincidence; but he wouldn't say anything more. "By his own admission, Paul's very disappointed that he actually has to show up this time," deadpans Robert Downey Jr. As reported here, EW also describes The Vision as a "synthetic, superpowered human designed by Ultron to show that he, too, has the power to create life." Interesting.

Last, but not least, Joss Whedon also addressed Scarlett Johansson being noticably pregnant while filming her fourth turn as Natasha Romanoff aka the Black Widow. "She's not going to spend the whole movie carrying groceries," assures the director. "We didn't trim any scenes. We're like, 'We'll make it work.'" It's revealed that Scarlett Johansson had three stunt doubles who, despite resembling the actress, had CGI markers on their faces to later be covered by Johansson's in post-production. "It's always funny," says Chris Evans of the ScarJo doubles. "You walk by, 'Hey, Scarlett--oh, weird. You're not Scarlett at all. Sorry. A lot of fake Scarletts around." EW also described part of the sequence they saw being filmed which involved Ultron's Iron Legion opening fire on the Avengers for the first time. While Black Widow was seen firing back in a high-waisted cocktail dress that clearly covered her baby bump, Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) was seen nearby sticking his fingers in his ears trying not to Hulk-out in response. It's rumored the two have a love connection in Age of Ultron, but that wasn't addressed in the Entertainment Weekly article. What do you think?

Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Cobie Smulders Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, with Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, and James Spader. The film is set for release on May 1, 2015.

Maven - 7/17/2014, 3:28 AM
How the heck do they take down Ultron drones (in that scene) with Banner refusing to turn and Thor being the only reasonable defense without gadgets?
ThedamnBatman - 7/17/2014, 3:40 AM
3 scarlets for the price of one
ThedamnBatman - 7/17/2014, 3:42 AM

Can't wait to see some photos of the Vision. I hope they release some conceptual sketches of him soon.
charlie2094 - 7/17/2014, 3:56 AM
Sounds good, really interested to see what they do with Vision. Awesome that Bettany will actually appear, probably a bit weird actually being the film proper after about 4 films :P
staypuffed - 7/17/2014, 4:00 AM
If Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are 'Team Ultron', does this mean they don't show up until later in the film? Or will Ultron already be created by the opening scene? Hmmm.
MsDarkPhoenix - 7/17/2014, 4:10 AM
Will Scarlet Witch date Vision, because Bettany is almost 20 years older than Olsen, it'd be weird...
Klone - 7/17/2014, 4:18 AM

Well he's playing an android, so not really.
GliderMan - 7/17/2014, 4:18 AM
I really, really don't want Banner and Black Widow to date. Just nooo.

Hopefully this one doesn't have such a low budget TV look to it. Like compare these two similar shots:

Granted DOTM is a terrible film and I'm not trying to imply otherwise, but one clearly has a TV look and the other a film one, so I'm hoping Avengers will have more visual flare this time around.
Meady - 7/17/2014, 4:23 AM
@ms darkphoenix ghost world comes to mind. When scarlet wasn't a milf.
loki668 - 7/17/2014, 4:23 AM
I'm sure that Joss used Scarlett's pregnancy hormones to fullest effect.

Joss Whedon: "See that guy dressed like a robot, Scarlett? He said that you looked 'fat' and that you should be at home, in the kitchen, where 'a woman belongs.'"

JW: "We'd better cut a check to that guy's family. Tell the press that it was a "stunt gone wrong".
Darktower - 7/17/2014, 4:24 AM

thetrojan - 7/17/2014, 4:35 AM
In my opinion,
Ultron was making small appearances in the last Iron Man movie..
The empty suit moving around,etc.
Meady - 7/17/2014, 4:35 AM
Just give me Star Wars7 title and pictures from cc and I'll be sweet.

marvel72 - 7/17/2014, 4:41 AM
@ maven

next week cheers,i think.

i was hoping it was this weekend.
Demongod20 - 7/17/2014, 4:42 AM
@ thetrojan

That was the iron legion but it looks like Whedon is marrying the Iron legion concept with the Ultron drone to create cinematic connective tissue.
MarvelFan15 - 7/17/2014, 4:43 AM
I'd say Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron are tied for the biggest Marvel movie ever.
