South Africa Filming Location Not Doubling for Wakanda In THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON?

With filming scheduled to kick off tomorrow in Johannesburg, it's reported that the South African city will appear as itself in the film, as opposed to another location. Check it out after the jump!

It seems The Avengers: Age of Ultron is scheduled to start filming “action photography sequences” as soon as tomorrow, on February 11, in Johannesburg, South Africa, and its closing down several of the city's busiest streets in the process; typical Marvel fashion. However, the most intriguing bit of news comes from the city's Gauteng Film Commission. “The great thing about this movie is that they are shooting Johannesburg as Johannesburg,” said Desmond Mthembu. “Often you will find filmmakers will shoot in Johannesburg and portray the location as Los Angeles. This time around the first 10 minutes of the film will be of Johannesburg.” Does this lay to rest the instant speculation, hopes and wishes that Marvel's fictional African nation of Wakanda, and its beloved superhero native the Black Panther, would finally debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year? Most likely, but the possibility could still prevail through references or trinkets we don't know about.

Nonetheless, with the first 10 minutes of The Avengers: Age of Ultron set to occur in Johannesburg, South Africa, could this be the initial setting for Baron von Strucker, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver? It was previously reported that (spoiler alert) the villainous Strucker, played by Thomas Kretschmann, would be Earth's mightiest heroes' initial target at the beginning of The Avengers sequel and that he would somehow introduce the team to its newest potential recruits, Wanda and Pietro Maximoff.

Anyhow, to those affected by the Age of Ultron shoot in Johannesburg's Central Business District, make the jump here for specified road closures, filming times and dates. What do you think?

The Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Jeremy Renner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, with Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, and James Spader. The film is set for release on May 1, 2015.

Kind of guessed that, Johannesburg doesn't seem much like Wakanda to me, never thought it would be...

Hopefully there's a reference to the character setting up a solo film, but already got more than enough characters. Maybe Ultron goes to Wakanda for Vibranium, make Wakanda look interesting and people might be interested in seeing more..
Spidey10 - 2/10/2014, 9:12 AM

so there is demand for a squirrel girl movie...
TheBeard - 2/10/2014, 9:14 AM
Bring on the set photos

MercwithMouth - 2/10/2014, 9:16 AM
Here's a theory...

Maybe the MCU won't have Wakanda. Maybe they will use South Africa as where Black Panther comes from. You would figure with Vibranium being around, that maybe they would've referenced where it came from. But they have not. Could be that Wakanda doesn't exist. I dunno, just spitballing.
batz11 - 2/10/2014, 9:19 AM

"No! No! That's just a prototype."
"What's it made of?"
"Vibranium. It's stronger than steel and a third of the weight. It's completely vibration absorbent."
"How come it's not a standard issue?"
"That's the rarest metal on Earth. What you're holding there? That's all we've got."

Of course not. Wakanda has to be mostly or fully CGI like Asgard. It would be a misstep to showcase it like a regular city.
DaVinci31 - 2/10/2014, 9:21 AM
Black Panther's overrated.

There, I said it.
DaVinci31 - 2/10/2014, 9:21 AM
charlie2094 - 2/10/2014, 9:23 AM

Exactly, Wakanda isn't a traditional city, much more fantasy like, why I never understood why people thought Johannesburg mean't Wakanda...only means that if they completely change the design of Wakanda
beto - 2/10/2014, 9:23 AM
I agree with BP being overrated
beto - 2/10/2014, 9:23 AM
batz11 - 2/10/2014, 9:26 AM
Fricken' close enough...

Doopie - 2/10/2014, 9:26 AM
how bout Johannesburg isn't meant to be wakanda...BP is just visiting?
QuestiontheAnswer - 2/10/2014, 9:26 AM
Joburg isn't Wakanda material. They should use Eastern Cape rural areas for that
Spidey10 - 2/10/2014, 9:26 AM
Now theres a squirrel girl
blkchi - 2/10/2014, 9:33 AM
Frick off ..thats like saying gl needed to make coast city cgi..wakanda can be shot as south africa..someone who has a daredevil avatar shouldn't be saying and mcu is overrated..a blind guy in tights boy wonder why dd flopped..anyway for the millions of blk kids it. Would be great to see a hero like us..

Sweet panther outfit gonna copy it....need to find a storm
TheClemster - 2/10/2014, 9:35 AM
Hum I am going to get lynched but the only times that I read comics with Black Panther were in Shadowland and other various crossovers (mainly X-Men / FF events)

Never really paid much attention to the character even if I though he was really cool ...
aRandomSinisterClone - 2/10/2014, 9:35 AM
black panther would be marvels biggest flop. look at statistics, black people dont go to movies like whites or asians.look at any tyler perry movie or black christmas, black vtines day, any of those shitty movies. they all do poorly.
batz11 - 2/10/2014, 9:37 AM
@Clemster, may wanna stay away from the word 'lynched' ;)
Fanmar16 - 2/10/2014, 9:37 AM
too many characters, just as well, or maybe T'Challa appears but anticipating Black Panther, anyway , I propose Orlando Bloom

charlie2094 - 2/10/2014, 9:38 AM

But Wakanda isn't a traditional city, much more like Asgard. You wouldn't make Asgard a traditional city, Wakanda is no different. Coast City would be real because thats a normal city...don't see your problem
TheClemster - 2/10/2014, 9:38 AM
And I get why CGI would be key, to my knowledge Wakanda as a futuristic look with jungle all over like the city came out of it, artificial weather and I think artificial forest as well and correct me if I am wrong but...

Ain't nothing like that ...

ROBBEATZZZ - 2/10/2014, 9:39 AM
@DaVinci31 everyone has a opinions similar to everyone having arseholes...but i really dont see how BP is overrated...i dont understand
