Thomas Kretschmann Talks 'Baron von Strucker' Role In THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Thomas Kretschmann Talks 'Baron von Strucker' Role In THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Seemingly confirming he's already started filming, a recent interview with Thomas Kretschmann has the German actor discuss his anxiety and multi-pic role in Marvel's The Avengers sequel. Check it out

Though James Spader will play The Avengers: Age of Ultron's titular villain, Thomas Kretschmann joined the cast in January as the sequel's “initial” threat, Baron Wolfgang von Strucker. Talking with B.Z. Berlin last week, the German actor commented on his role and confirmed it to span multiple films. “That's great of course,” he said. “I have a multi-picture deal which means I will not only appear in the 2nd part, but they're planning with me for a longer period of time. But I don't know details yet, they're keeping their cards close to their chest - top secret!” The King Kong actor was asked if the big-budget film made him nervous. “Oh yes, I was nervous,” he admits. “I was overprepared; then on the set I went up to Joss Whedon, who passes for a genius, and said 'this is my first day, this is huge, please have patience with me, I'm a bit nervous.'”

Principal photography on Age of Ultron doesn't start until later this month, so it's intriguing that Kretschmann may have already filmed some scenes as Baron von Strucker and under Whedon's direction. Considering the actor is contracted to play the Captain America foe in multiple films, and next month's The Winter Soldier is said to set up The Avengers sequel, perhaps we'll see Strucker sooner than we think… (and maybe even in the all-but-confirmed Captain America 3). Regardless, in addition to being the initial villain of The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Baron von Strucker is also said to be responsible for bringing Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch into contact with our mightiest heroes.

Anyhow, the film has already completed “action photography sequences” in South Africa, so key scenes in South Korea is next on the Age of Ultron filming schedule. Then later this month, the Marvel production will head over to Italy while principal photography with the actors will take place on sound stages in the United Kingdom. Avengers stars who are already physically (or verbally) getting ready for the extensive shoot include Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, and even newcomer Elizabeth Olsen. The actress debuted her new straight-haired brunette look last week in preparation for her role as Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch. What do you think?

The Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Jeremy Renner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, with Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, and James Spader. The film is set for release on May 1, 2015.

Cool, It seems like Marvel signs all their actors to Multi-Picture deals.
MrCBM56 - 3/1/2014, 1:01 PM
Cool. Can't wait for his performance. He was great in King Kong.
charlie2094 - 3/1/2014, 1:03 PM
First day on set?

So that means he's in Cap then? Or maybe just the after credits?

Kind of guessed he'd be stuck around, Cap 3 for definite
charlie2094 - 3/1/2014, 1:06 PM
Guess this does confirm the rumoured after credits scene for Winter Soldier
Kurne - 3/1/2014, 1:06 PM
... Depends on if Joss directed the post-credits scene for Cap (if THAT turns out to he true as well).
JordanKing - 3/1/2014, 1:06 PM
If Joss Whedon was involved, I'd put money on it being the After credits scene.
Bekss - 3/1/2014, 1:06 PM
I thought it was a photo of Liam Neeson for a second
Ramiel - 3/1/2014, 1:10 PM

What he said is exciting... That credits scene with him, QS and SW might be true after all!
MrCamw1 - 3/1/2014, 1:15 PM
Is it just me or does the guy kind of look like liam neeson?
Interestein - 3/1/2014, 1:15 PM
He's a great actor, love him! Can't wait.
spidey1994 - 3/1/2014, 1:17 PM
He was badass in King Kong, can't wait to see he's Strucker!
KingEmperor - 3/1/2014, 1:21 PM
This guy's an underrated actor. I remember he was supposed to have Tom Cruise's role in Valkyrie, but he was cast as that Reserve Guard Commander after the directors changed. And he was cool in King Kong.
Vegeta - 3/1/2014, 1:26 PM
Well, taking into account the rumor of Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver appearing in the mid-credit scene in The Winter Soldier and the fact that principal photography hasn't even started on Age Of Ultron yet, I'd say his first day on set he is referring to is the mid-credit scene Joss Whedon obviously shot for The Winter Soldier.
TheManFromMars - 3/1/2014, 1:29 PM
After Jolllem and Intruuder, I'm waiting for Griif, Passto, and Gustto to show up...
batz11 - 3/1/2014, 1:29 PM
The guy was great as Van Helsing in the Dracula show on NBC, yeah, I actually watched every episode, it was really [frick]ing good, too bad it may not get renewed...
Kurne - 3/1/2014, 1:29 PM

Stop referring to yourself in third-person.
Highflyer - 3/1/2014, 1:29 PM
I just hope the Avengers 2 has a better story than the last one...
Pheezmatic - 3/1/2014, 1:31 PM

Hellboy6666 - 3/1/2014, 1:33 PM
I like this guy. I'm glad he will be apart of the MCU.
ruadh - 3/1/2014, 1:34 PM
"Cool, It seems like Marvel signs all their actors to Multi-Picture deals."

Yep. That's typical for franchises, even if you aren't really sure you will want that character back. Tim Roth, Terence Howard, and Ed Norton all had multi-picture deals. Marvel always has the option to bring them back, but with those three at least, it's not too likely.
TheManFromMars - 3/1/2014, 1:35 PM

Early February? They have a time machine?!
GodzillaKart - 3/1/2014, 1:39 PM
This is cool. He's a quality actor.

DrunkenNukem - 3/1/2014, 1:45 PM
interesting indeed...
Pasto - 3/1/2014, 1:47 PM
Eh, ok...
CherryBomb - 3/1/2014, 1:49 PM
Yeah this guy doesn't fully understand the meaning of a multi-picture deal. But either way this is good casting :)

And I love Liz's hair. She suits both brunette and blonde perfectly.
& she's so pretty.

Also, hmmm I don't think Aaron Taylor Johnson has dyed his hair, unless he's wearing a wig. Who knows!
Destined - 3/1/2014, 1:49 PM
Looking forward to seeing these scenes!
GiantNerd - 3/1/2014, 1:50 PM
I have a good feeling about this.
batz11 - 3/1/2014, 1:51 PM
@Cherry, yeah, she is absolutely gorgeous there...
FerFogs - 3/1/2014, 1:52 PM
The fact he's german is a very good sign, maybe this time they'll use german as language sometimes.

I remember when I watched XMFC after Caps I thought "Jeez the Marvel guys are probably facepalming now, they should've used some german language when the Hydra guys were talking among themselves".
DaVinci31 - 3/1/2014, 1:53 PM
No but seriously, I cannot wait for this.

Kretschmann was also pretty awesome as Cross in Wanted.

Pasto - 3/1/2014, 1:54 PM
I would've picked 100 different characters for this film before I picked this dude. He's more of a guy for Cap, not the Avengers. I feel Marvel should reconsider having this character in the film.
Klone - 3/1/2014, 1:54 PM
These Intruder impressionists really do bad jobs emulating him.
Pasto - 3/1/2014, 1:55 PM
Intruder is a one and only. You can't imitate him. Yah just can't. He was hand made by something.
Pasto - 3/1/2014, 1:55 PM
I say something and not someone for a reason.
Pasto - 3/1/2014, 1:57 PM
SagealeMode? Really? God dammit...
Pasto - 3/1/2014, 1:58 PM
[frick] you buddy, [frick] you.
