BOX OFFICE: MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS Crosses $73.1M; Continues Breaking Records

BOX OFFICE: MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS Crosses $73.1M; Continues Breaking Records

Marvel's The Avengers isn't released in the US until May 4th (although that hasn't stopped it nabbing over 60% of all pre-sold movie tickets online) but more figures from overseas are in and things are looking very, very good for Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble!

More box office figures for Marvel's The Avengers have been revealed by Deadline, and after just three days of release, things are looking even better than expected for the film which combines the heroes from Iron Man/Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger all into one incredible blockbuster. The film has so far been released in 41 territories and box office now stands at a total of $71.3M. This is only 70% of its full foreign run, and the figures from key territories are as follows.

• Australia $11.1M
• UK $9.4M
• France $6.8M
• Italy $5.8M
• Mexico $4.7M
• Korea $4.5M
• Taiwan $3.6M
• Germany $3.4M
• Philippines $3.4M
• Brazil $2.8M
• Hong Kong $1.8M
• Spain $1.7M.

Now, here's a rundown of just a few of the latest records the film has managed to break. Superhero films often do very well in the UK and the past two days has seen Avengers Assemble exceed the box office openings of Iron Man, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. Hong Kong, Malaysia and Iceland had the hightest Friday opening ever, while Taiwan and Mexico had the second, and India and Brazil third. With The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises still on the way, do you think either of those will end up being an even bigger success? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff/Black Widow
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson
Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill
Tom Hiddleston as Loki

You know what, I always come to this site and see everyone argue Dc vs Marvel..Dark Knight vs Avengers..Nolan vs Every Marvel Director...I look at it like this..Im just a superhero fan in general..I hope Avengers breaks records and then Dark Knight comes and shatters even more Records..[frick] it..lets show these Hollywood bastards that Capes can gross more money than those horrible Twilight,Titanic,Rom Coms, and any other stupid movie they try to jam down our throats!!!!
nuclearpriest - 4/28/2012, 2:19 PM
While I am admittedly a total Marvel Zombie I feel I should point out that John Carter did very well overseas too! Celebrate cautiously.
TheManWithBigEars - 4/28/2012, 2:20 PM
I hope with the shit load of money they're making they start reacquiring some properties...
ibravosp5 - 4/28/2012, 2:23 PM
Avengers looks like movie of 2012
Chewtoy - 4/28/2012, 2:26 PM
Unless the reviews on TDKR are brutal it should be able to match it (And I say this as someone who feels TDK is highly overrated, though I was a big fan of BB).

I think ASM really would be a stretch to match that, though.

Honestly, though, this kind of welcome pretty much guarantees that WB will have to immediately put some plans in motion for a Justice League film. "Green Lantern" is a problem, yes (one even more obvious for the fact that "Avengers" will have surpassed it's lifetime box office gross before that film even finishes its domestic opening weekend.) However, there's simply no way the studio can justify sitting on the property with "The Avengers" proving that the super-hero thing isn't played out, and that audiences are jazzed for a team-up.

I'm not saying that a JL film will instantly find the same success (especially if they don't have the kind of build up to it that Marvel put into theirs) but there's just no way they can tell their shareholders that it's not worth a try.
Ric - 4/28/2012, 2:29 PM
just came home from the cinema and it was awesome :0

JDUKE25 - 4/28/2012, 2:29 PM
@tea No i know what you mean, I like hearing that a movie I love is doing well. But getting reports almost every day saying it's doing well and breaking records is a bit much. I thinks it's just better to report on the box office intake for the first day, opening weekend, first week, second week, etc..
JDUKE25 - 4/28/2012, 2:30 PM
@tea That way the news of it is kept somewhat fresh.
Ironnick - 4/28/2012, 2:38 PM
If you guys get reelz channel, there is a special on The Avengers movie.
thewonderer - 4/28/2012, 2:54 PM
Wow TASM has zero chance of getting half this close
SugarYumYum - 4/28/2012, 3:15 PM
@Ironnick: Thanks for the tip! Just set my DVR to record. :D

At this rate, it looks like 100 million will be in the bag when the weekend's over. I'd hazard a guess that it'll bank somewhere between 150-200 million in the US opening and 800-900 million+ in it's theatrical run. I'll remain cautiously optimistic but honestly wouldn't be too surprised to see it hit a billion.

@Chewtoy: Agreed. I imagine the suits are looking at these numbers and are fiddling with how to put the property on the front burner. There's no excuse now.
Spidey91 - 4/28/2012, 3:18 PM
deserves all the money it gets and more!
HumanTorch83 - 4/28/2012, 3:32 PM
I'm sorry but as a Marvel fan, I hope Avengers breaks records, I hope dark knight rises is under Avengers...
Batman Begins did 200mill total gross, Dark Knight did 1 billion
I think Rises will be in between that

Either way 6 days till my body collapses from not being ready enough
Zoidberg - 4/28/2012, 3:47 PM
Great news!

Surprised at the 'low' numbers here in Spain. The cinema I went was packed.

Begins did 375. It's like 440 today taking into acount Inflation.
Ancar - 4/28/2012, 3:54 PM
I believe here in Brazil it will make something like US$ 4 million, nothing more - John Carter did the same.

The Avengers is a very good movie, nothing more, nothing less. It will not change the way movies are made and bla, bla, bla.

Actually, the movie is far beyond a masterpiece!!!
beercules - 4/28/2012, 4:01 PM
You guys are really really underestimating Spidey. The first three were THE biggest superhero movies overseas- far ahead of The Dark Knight and any of the Avengers films. With this one in 3D, I expect that it will be the the biggest superhero movie overseas this year
dancingmonkey08 - 4/28/2012, 4:09 PM
Forgive me because Im excited beyond words after seeing the Avengers. one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, its in my top 10. Seriously, the only negatives were Loki's motivations were a bit generic (but he was incredible), Hulk should have talked a little bit more and a small few of the scenes dragged on a little but these are 5% negatives with a 95% awesomeness beyond expectations. I felt like a 12 year old kid again watching a Michael Bay-level of badass with relatable and wonderful characters who surprisingly mesh together very well. Joss Whedon and the incredible cast, I love you, I couldnt be more happy

oh and if you havent seen it, go now you are missing out. And you Americans, dont wait around, when it comes out go to the cinema straightaway. It takes A LOT to impress me but my god, the Avengers exceeded my expectations. I need to sit down now...
EditNinja - 4/28/2012, 4:11 PM
Wishing it all the best.
I loved it. It deserves all the cash it gets.
dancingmonkey08 - 4/28/2012, 4:11 PM
hell yeah @ BigHec :)
mstaley3000 - 4/28/2012, 4:31 PM
The Avengers will make more than $1 billion worldwide.

First, for the guy claiming that it will only make $4 million in Brazil (I assume that is your opening weekend number because Cap made $20 million in Brazil in its run) Cap made $7 million and Thor $5 million in their opening and there is no way Avengers will make less (barring some national tragedy that closes all theaters). I get it, you don't want the movie to do well, but try to at least reach for the believable. We know it isn't an average movie even if we haven't seen it yet.

Next, not to comment on the quality of either TDKRises or TASM, but neither of them has what The Avengers has, a giant cast of stars. From a promotional standpoint, the other comic book movies can't compete. If Disney/Marvel wants, they can have a major cast member promoting the movie on every network talk show plus the morning network talk shows and not have a single repeat cast member in that 24hr time period. One of the reasons that Norton was not brought back was because he is not a fan of promoting the movies he is in and when he is the main character it makes it tough to promote the movie. With The Avengers they share the load and can do a lot more promotion without it getting tired and stale since each actor can come out with their own viewpoint. Also, they can have several together which provides a great chemistry.

Finally, the billion dollar mark, it depends a lot more on the foreign box office than it does the domestic. I believe we will see a minimum of $400 million domestically and a minimum of $600 million foreign. Disney knows their foreign markets and the prior individual Avenger's movies have paved the way very well.
marknjoanna - 4/28/2012, 4:35 PM
may as well start on avengers 2 now.and keep the beat down on dc going. lets roll marvel
eoin3 - 4/28/2012, 4:40 PM
DAMN! I swear normal people are going into this movie and coming out like, "I liked it. It was much better than Cats. I'm going to see it again and again..."
