BOX OFFICE: Marvel's THE AVENGERS Set For A Record-Breaking $104M In The Second Weekend

The Joss Whedon-directed superhero epic is not slowing down at the North American box office. After crushing the first weekend with amazing $207M, The Avengers is set to break a second weekend record, previously held by Avatar.

Things are looking mighty indeed for Joss Whedon and Marvel's The Avengers. Last weekend, film has set a brand new opening weekend record with $207 million, and went on to break a lot more records during the week. Now, in its second weekend, The Avengers is looking to become the first film in history to pass a $100 million mark. Thanks to Deadline, below are the estimates for this weekend:

Marvel’s The Avengers from Disney is looking to break $100M in its second weekend for the first time in movie history (beating Avatar's 75M). Saturday’s number is about $44.5M after Friday’s was $29.1M for an estimated weekend total of $104M.

The second weekend record was previously held by James Cameron's Avatar ($75.6M). Meanwhile, Tim Burton's Dark Shadows starring Johnny Depp is on track for an underwhelming $28.5M. Also, thanks to Box Office Mojo, these are the all-time box office records that The Avengers broke so far in US:

UPDATE: Exhibitor Relations is reporting $103.1M, still the best 2nd weekend in history:

Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Cobie Smulders, The Avengers is now in theatres!

I was so worried about this film's box office before it was released, I couldn't be more happy that I was wrong. I really hope this becomes the highest grossing film of all time!
Benjamitesandwich - 5/13/2012, 7:33 AM
What ever happened to Nolanite? I remember him claiming the Avengers wouldn't do all that well in the box office.
MadTitan - 5/13/2012, 7:33 AM

Dark Knight Rises hasn't been released yet... We'll see what happens? The Amazing Spider-Man to me looks like it could be the best one of the lot. Not with the box office tho. Man of Steel lets take these guys down in 2013!!!
Priest - 5/13/2012, 7:40 AM
I said it before and I say it again, best CBM ever. Those of us who believed that this movie was going to be highly successful where right. The haters, the nolanites...they where wrong. Period.

I highly doubt that TDKR will do better. The Avengers has set the bar so high, that there's no way that TDKR can surpass it.
jazzman - 5/13/2012, 7:43 AM

so what TDKR isnt in 3D. i did not even watch The Avengers in 3D at all. seen it twice in 2D :P

I understand why you're celebrating now. You feel like Team Marvel beat Team twilight, Hungergames, and team potter. You realize by lumping yourselves together, you in fact are...
Nevermind, you won't pay attention anyway.
Marqy - 5/13/2012, 7:44 AM
This is so great

People running down others films on here now Avengers is successful is as embarrassing as the ill feeling towards Avengers prior to release, if not more so.

This news really brings tears to our eyes :p

Good thing you decided to watch this before the weekend ends, I knew you couldn't resist it :p
Irons - 5/13/2012, 7:53 AM
Crazy, I wonder if it can beat Titanic in domestic box office.
jazzman - 5/13/2012, 7:53 AM

they are bad parents. 3 & 4 year olds to see the Avengers not good.

dude stop that Sh1t about Nolanites its getting old. we are comicbookmovieites LOL
marvel72 - 5/13/2012, 7:54 AM
excellent, the future is looking great for marvel fans.

to everyone who said this film would be a massive flop & would recieve bad reveiws, how wrong you all were.

i knew it would be a massive hit,i just didn't relize how massive.
MatchesMalone1989 - 5/13/2012, 7:54 AM
Good. Make The Academy Recognize that CBM's make dents!

Wait till I get rich. And I will get rich. I'm gonna Jay and Silent Bob most of these fags trying to start beef on here. Double D your first on my list. Can't wait to step up to you on your doorstep and beat your ass.

SFCamerica - 5/13/2012, 7:54 AM
TDKR will not come close to these numbers for one simple reason... NO JOKER, he carried the last film. Most people don't have a clue who the hell Bane is. By the way, comic book fans are heavily outnumbered at the theaters other than opening weekend.
thalidomide - 5/13/2012, 7:54 AM
jazzman - 5/13/2012, 7:54 AM

but yet they are both rated the same 12A aka PG-13 for US LOL
beetheb - 5/13/2012, 7:55 AM
Holy shit they actually did it. Insane. Unless this movie ends up being ridiculously frontloaded, which with only a roughly 50% second weekend drop it shouldn't be, final domestic gross should end up somewhere between $500-550 Million.

This movie is seeing the fervor of the original Spider-Man, if not a little more. Cuh-razy.
themann11 - 5/13/2012, 7:56 AM
I'm a Batman/DCcomics fan exclusively but I got to give props to where it's deserved and The Avengers is performing very well...I didn't think it was going to perform as well as it much props to the Avengers and all those behind it.
jazzman - 5/13/2012, 7:57 AM

no one dont know who is the guy in the end credits they will know in the Sequel LOL.
thalidomide - 5/13/2012, 7:57 AM

Deserves every cent! Now I can't wait to get my hands of the Blu-Ray Discs.
SFCamerica - 5/13/2012, 7:58 AM
@Jazzman - how are they bad parents? If they are behaved then who cares? My 3 year old nephew loves watching Spiderman, TFA, and any other Marvel movie, he is glued to the TV. TDK is overrated, spent the whole time either enjoying Joker and waiting for Joker to come back.
jazzman - 5/13/2012, 7:59 AM

well the Nolanites going to hurt u down cause they are crazy mofo's lol :P
MadTitan - 5/13/2012, 7:59 AM

@thalidomide --- lol, you are 100% correct pal!

actually luck just came by my side and my plan has been cancelled, not only do i got to watch it alone but my Dad, Mom, 2 big bros and 2 more is with me, talk about Avengers fever infecting faster than a flue. that's no fluke! lol

thalidomide - 5/13/2012, 8:02 AM

So what were your parents' thoughts about the movie? Even old people are loving this film. That is why the Avengers is WINNING!!!!
