Chris Hemsworth And Tom Hiddleston Explain How Thor Returns To Earth In THE AVENGERS

With the Bifrost destroyed at the end of Thor, just how does the God of Thunder return to Earth in Marvel's The Avengers? Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston do their best to explain this particular plot development. [Minor Spoilers Ahead]

"Loki says, 'How much dark energy did the All-father have to muster to conjure you here?' Tom Hiddleston recalled in a recent interview with . "The Bifrost is still down, he can’t just be riding down the rainbow bridge, Heimdall [is gone], it’s all changed since the end of 'Thor' so it’s obviously cost Odin a significant amount to get there," he explained. "I guess he’s been sent down by Odin to go and deal with this crazy cat that is his brother." Chris Hemsworth reveals that while the movie doesn't really go into the specific details of Thor's return, his time on Earth is actually limited. "It’s not really explained, but it’s assumed that he can only be there for a window of time. Odin has had to call in some favors from around the realm. And he turns up. That or the bus," he joked.

Cool bro.
INSTANTJUSTICE - 4/30/2012, 2:39 PM
Makes even less sense.
bane187 - 4/30/2012, 2:40 PM
Awesome first!!! I was wondering how he got there
kevberg - 4/30/2012, 2:41 PM
Its not even a problem. In the comics Thor has used Mjolnir to open portals before. Easy explanation.
Knightrider - 4/30/2012, 2:44 PM
Yeah in the movie it was such a through away line to explain it, like blink and you missed it, but wouldn't of added anything to have a detailed explanation anyways. I think a throwaway line like this could of worked to explain not getting War Machine involved too, don't care that he wasn't there, but they are hiring all these people and he doesn't even get a line like "What about Rhodes?" "Thanks to Hammer industries that suit no longer works" Anyways that is terrible, but felt he deserved a mention. Anyways great film for those who haven't seen it enjoy.
QUITEMASSIVE - 4/30/2012, 2:45 PM
SMH exactly kevberg the hammer can generate a portal to go back and forth some one didnt do their homework on this
clogan - 4/30/2012, 2:46 PM
I'd like to think that Thor, and even Odin still haven't explored the full potentials of Mjolnir. That's why it's a mystery so far. (:
OtakuPapi - 4/30/2012, 2:47 PM
His performance in Avengers was his best hands down even better than in Thor... EVIL DEFINES LOKI in Avengers
Asterisk - 4/30/2012, 2:48 PM
Is there a spoiler in the title? Naaaahh.

Honestly, I have no opinion. As long as he's there.
jazzman - 4/30/2012, 2:50 PM

i agree Rhodes should of had a mention in the movie maybe he could of phone Tony about something.
RunDTC - 4/30/2012, 2:51 PM
Paulley - 4/30/2012, 2:51 PM
The movie hammer cant make portals guys.... its the MCU not the comics.

Odin used dark energy, obviously not something that is to be used lightly and then they used the cube to get back.

You should alll be asking how Thor knew what was going on and where to be to get his brother if Heimdall is gone?
RedSkull667 - 4/30/2012, 2:56 PM
For the first time I should Agree wid Sharky Boy

The Dark Energy that Odin Summons will do something that will lead to Thor 2

This makes sense because in any case Thor 2 is already said to be less Earth Centric

Just think if that Dark Energy Awakens Surter or Pisses off Hela.

Avengers gave us a glimpse of Thor 2 and I guess it gave Glimpse for Iron Man 3 and Cap 2 as well it is just that we didn't noticed.
LordHuck - 4/30/2012, 3:02 PM

More than anyone here you love to speculate, pull things out of your ass and make shit up. Then frame it as though it has a source other than your own mind.
CorndogBurglar - 4/30/2012, 3:18 PM
I didnt understand what the big deal was about the bifrost getting taken down in Thor anyway. Can't they just build another one?

Anyway, loki explained how Thor returned with one sentence in avengers.
HAQ - 4/30/2012, 3:20 PM
The Older Godz put him on on how 2 rock this...
mstaley3000 - 4/30/2012, 3:25 PM
Not having seen Avengers yet but based upon spoilers and Thor movie logic, Odin makes a deal with Thanos. One Infinity Gem for a round trip for Thor to bring back Loki. Big deal, Thanos with an Infinity Gem, doesn't make Thanos that much more dangerous but Loki on Earth with a Cosmic Cube? That's my guess.
superotherside - 4/30/2012, 3:25 PM
Nope not looking. :)
Odin - 4/30/2012, 3:39 PM
Midgård or bust!
imc21 - 4/30/2012, 4:00 PM
I know someone mentioned that Thor 2 takes place right after the first one, but how is that possible. They said in an interview that Natalie Portman was going to reprise her role as Jane again, and Chris even said that they are going to explore their relationship further. It would make sense to take place after the avengers so that the bi frost would be fixed and he can return to earth. I'm just interested to see who the villan will be. I thinking that the enchantress and the executioner would be perfect. Of course I would love to see beta ray bill in there somehow and tie him in to battle Thanos in Avengers 2 but that'll never happen.
Sparrowsabre7 - 4/30/2012, 4:07 PM
@Knightrider: Yeah, or that he was on a mission for the military. Rhodey is a military man, so I'm assumng that the War Machine remains in US military possession: a compromise on that part of both stark and the US, that way the US has their own Iron Man but it's in the hands of someone Tony trusts implicitly.
stevebrt - 4/30/2012, 4:23 PM
spoilers........well now that the Asgardians have the tesseract back they'll probably use it to rebuild the bifrost for Thor 2
BlackGetsuga3 - 4/30/2012, 4:34 PM
I remember is being said around April fools and nobody believed it, guess it wasn't a joke after all
Jaspion - 4/30/2012, 5:08 PM
If Loki can find ways to travel to other realms without the Bifrost, why can't Odin or Thor? And that thing about dark energy might be a hint.

About War Machine, at the end of Iron Man 2 Rhodey says "Can I borrow the suit? My car got destroyed during the fight.." or something like this, so maybe the suit is back with Tony.

Anyways, we'll have to wait until IM3 and Thor 2 i guess
ahhmynuts - 4/30/2012, 5:11 PM
odin now owes some people in different realms a favor...dundunduuuuuuun
hartley07 - 4/30/2012, 5:54 PM
the bus.
Gerrit - 4/30/2012, 6:08 PM
Well, in the beginning of the film, it says "Joint Dark Energy..." or something like that in the walls of the buildings os the facility where Shield is experimenting on the Tesseract.
eleven59 - 4/30/2012, 6:23 PM
Ok so I havnt seen it yet but I imagine him getting back is easy to explain- Loki mentioned paths, bridge can easily be rebuilt, Jane was shown working on a way, shield has the cube and can tap into it... Or even Odin

However the bigger question for me is.... Why is heimdall gone!!!??? What happened to him!!!!???
ADParker - 4/30/2012, 6:34 PM
In truth that is one thing (of many) I really liked in the film; they didn't bother belabouring the point of how he got there. Nor did they for the other characters more that was strictly neccessary. Instead they just got on with it, avoiding the danger of too much exposition, too little action and development.
PsyGuy - 4/30/2012, 10:21 PM
HE COULD HAVE AT LEAST TEXTED JANE! ... sheesh some boyfriend he is.
NoCape77 - 5/1/2012, 12:13 AM
Hmmm I was worried about this and I see they went with the Goku approach from dragonball z majin saga instead of him leaning that his hammer can port him there.
phoenixphil - 5/1/2012, 3:05 AM

I'm REALLY hoping that the Avengers post credits scene alludes primarily to Thor 2 rather than Avengers 2. I'm hoping that the dark magic Odin needed is somehow tied to Thanos. I'd much rather that Avengers 2 involved Hank Pym creating Vision and the internal problems it causes when Vision goes crazy.
gannicus - 5/1/2012, 8:57 AM
the way loki returns in the avengers kind of leaves the door open to the red skull from captain america to be alive and when loki meets cap in the avengers seems like he knows who he is hmmmm.
PeterParker1991 - 5/1/2012, 2:14 PM
Makes sense. Can't wait until Friday. 3 days. Wow, wow, wow
maito - 5/4/2012, 9:19 PM
Tom:"I guess he’s been sent down by Odin to go and deal with this crazy cat that is his brother."
maito - 5/4/2012, 9:30 PM
Wait...Odin didn't use the bifrost to cast away Thor in the first one.
