Clark Gregg Shares His Thoughts On Returning As The Vision In THE AVENGERS Sequel

Clark Gregg comments on the recent fan speculation that Agent Coulson will be brought back as The Vision in either The Avengers sequel or another Marvel Studios movie, revealing that he's pretty happy with the way things ended for the S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent.

There haven't exactly been rumours that Clark Gregg will be brought back as The Vision in a future Marvel movie, although you would be forgiven for thinking so after the huge amount of fan speculation which has surrounded the idea. Even Joe Quesada recently dismissed the idea when asked what he thought of bringing back Coulson as the Android at the Kapow! Comic Convention in London two weeks ago. Fans have also been divided, but the actor himself has now spoken out about the theory.

"Vision is cool," Clark Gregg told MTV Splash Page when asked for his thoughts on the idea. "But I would hate to be any AI life form. If I got to come back, I would need to still be somebody who could wisecrack, because my favorite part of the job was that if anybody was going to tease anybody about their diva superhero outfit or whatever, it would be me."

"I really love what Joss did with Agent Coulson in 'The Avengers,'" he said when talk turned to his shocking and emotional death at the hands of Loki on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier. "It seems like an idea that was in the cards, not only from Joss but from Marvel, in that you needed to ground the movie in some real emotion and stakes. I loved playing that guy, and I'll miss playing him, but I was glad to have that job."

The MCU is like comics and we all know no one stays dead in the comics .

I do not see how you guys aren't losing accounts and traffic from this site because of these damn ads.
TheGambitFreak - 6/2/2012, 4:41 AM
GO BUDDY GO!!!!!!! He's gotta be VISION!!!!!
I mean, yeah, you can tell he's missing it already, he really wants to return; Fans are screaming like a requiem for him to come back! And Marvel Studios seems to be taking notes from the fans (See the Captain America: The First Avenger articles when everybody was crying about his helmet not featuring wings)so we might just get our not-so-silent request for him to come back seen and approved.

goldenavenger77 - 6/2/2012, 4:48 AM
Well, he has had a SMASHING time being in some awesome movies and he has been quiet entertaining.

marvelstudios - 6/2/2012, 4:50 AM
coulson should stay dead. these heroes need to feel like they are in real danger and can be killed by the villans, otherwise there is no element of danger. i would like to see one of the other avengers or shield agents get killed in the upcoming MCU movies.
TheGambitFreak - 6/2/2012, 4:59 AM
It's easy, they preserve his brain, ignite it with a machine, then they calibrate it into an android.
MisterFixit - 6/2/2012, 5:05 AM
hundreds of civilians killed
is enough to feel in danger
RorMachine - 6/2/2012, 5:13 AM
Coulson IS DEAD!!!!. He is expired, an ex - agent, deceased, kicked the bucket, bought the farm, flying with the angels. DEAD Let him stay that way. Man, some fanboys just can't let things go.
mgeoff88 - 6/2/2012, 5:16 AM
It's nice to see an actor that's actually so down to earth for commenting on whether he would comeback for such a huge franchise.

Most actors would say they want to appear in the sequel anyway they could. Not Clark Gregg though.

He obviously cares for the franchise. It's not just another paycheck to him, you know.
Jolt17 - 6/2/2012, 5:17 AM
His death indeed did a lot in the team's formation, but...I do miss the Son of Coul. As for the return, I'd love to see him as the Vision, but he doesn't seem so eager to be an android (yes, I also want to see him wisecracks if he ever returns, so that's a great point he mentioned there), so...Life Model Decoy, or whatever, please.
marvelstudios - 6/2/2012, 5:23 AM
Question: In the Avengers when the Chitauri shot Captain America with the lazer gun, how come Captain America didnt get severly hurt or bleed to death? Is it because of the serem, the uniform, etc?

btw i dont know much about comic book characters so this might be a stupid question
TheGambitFreak - 6/2/2012, 5:30 AM
@marvelstudios If your refering to this:

The lazer merely grazes his side, besides, he falls down and when Thor helps him up, he is holding his wound and is breathing hard and looks to be in pain.
Coachella - 6/2/2012, 5:30 AM
He's coming back as Vision. I sense it .
marvelstudios - 6/2/2012, 5:39 AM
yea i was talking about that. those lazers made explosionsi expected cap to get more injured
shadyginzo - 6/2/2012, 5:40 AM
I don't want to see it myself, I feel like death of loved characters has completely lost it's emotion cause deep down we know it'll be unimaginatively undone by the next writer, director or whatever. David Fincher couldn't kill Ellen Ripley, Manny Cato couldn't kill Tony Almeida, and lets be fair the only reason Data wasn't resurrected was because the franchise died with him!

I can't describe how desperately I want to see Coulson return, and for that reason... he shouldn't.

I seriously adore Clark Gregg and I cried all 5 times that I saw the movie. I seriously would love to see him come back, but Clark definitely has a point about the humorless Vision. While he has emotions, he is definitely a pretty serious character. However, if they can change Hawkeye's personality to a super serious archer/fighter instead of the cocky, smart ass character he is in the comics, drain every ounce of humor out of Spider Man amd turn him into a whiny, cry baby and even change Tony Stark's personality, I am sure they could give Vision a little more personality. I think Coulson has just enough humor, but also he is just enough emotionless. I know they would have to change his origin story, but as they do that with everyone else, I don't really care. So I say BRING BACK THE SON OF COUL!!
WOLVERINEDECADE - 6/2/2012, 6:05 AM
it was shown in the movie that Agent Coulson knew most of the main SHIELD agents, from Black Widow to Maria Hill to Hawkeye, w/c means they've already known each other a lot, and it also showed how Coulson's relationship w/ Cap was, him being the avid fan of the Captain. Coulson also met Thor in Thor's solo movie, so i guess those were enough time to show his relationship w/ the members of the team and his death indeed made a big impact on the team.
Citizen - 6/2/2012, 6:10 AM
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but early on in the movie Tony Stark answers his phone, saying: "You've reached the Life Model Decoy of Tony Stark..."

If I remember correctly, Life Model Decoys in the Marvel comics did not know/realize they were imitations of the people they represented. It's quite possible the "real" Coulson was actually with Jane Foster (or somewhere else entirely).

This would allow Marvel to bring back Coulson and still bring Vision into the MCU with another actor. That is, if they never intended to use Coulson to bring the Vision to life. Anyway, just thought I'd point that out (the LMDs).
CptShellhead - 6/2/2012, 6:23 AM
I just hope they can keep all the other actors alive and well in the same roles for at least 1 more. I don't want anyone's else playing Cap, Shellhead, Thor, Hulk(i really like mark as Bruce), Hawkeye and Black Widow. If they add 1 more that's great. But they can still do so much with what they have got. Agent C is gone, but if anyone were to be Vision, he would be great.
AFlashFloodOfVenom - 6/2/2012, 6:28 AM
I swear he is still contracted for more Marvel films though, so surely this justifies that he will be back in some form or another, be it Vision or something entirely different.
thalidomide - 6/2/2012, 6:32 AM
Stay dead Coulson.
MitchConner - 6/2/2012, 6:35 AM
That's funny.,.whatever....I hope he never comes back...that way we can get to know his replacement a lot better...because...uh, it's a she...way too many dudes already. Iron Man 1 had it right, movie starts with hot chicks and ends with them...
figuresmaniac - 6/2/2012, 6:37 AM
ABLEE337 - 6/2/2012, 6:54 AM
I would love to see a prequel movie with Coulson as the man in black trying to recruit other super powered beings for SHIELD and running into some crazy adventures. Maybe he could try recruiting a character that turns out to be a Marvel villian and it's up to Coulson to take him down.
I rather see that than MIB.
FoxForce5 - 6/2/2012, 7:05 AM
Remember, Fury said that the medics called Coulson's death but we never saw them do so and we know he lied about other aspects of Coulson's death so no reason to think he was being honest there. Plus, being Marvel, no one stays dead. My bet in bringing him back is with Nano-Technology which would tie in nicely with the Iron Man 3 Extremis based story.
FoxForce5 - 6/2/2012, 7:07 AM
@ IronFan93: what's sick about that? :-D
Xandera - 6/2/2012, 7:10 AM
I think it's a good thing they killed Coulson...
This way they bring in more S.H.I.E.L.D. agents for future movies...
I also liked the fact that Agent Coulson's death was done meaningfully... It wasn't pointless, it served an awesome purpose...
Without his death, they wouldn't have become The Avengers in the movie...
I am sure they would have thought of another way to bring them together, but it wouldn't have been the same...
I say leave him in the grave...
Xandera - 6/2/2012, 7:16 AM
@IronFan93 - Vision having sex with Wanda is no different than a woman pleasuring herself with a vibrator.
JatevinM - 6/2/2012, 7:21 AM
I said it once and I'll say it again I would love to see Coulson comeback but I'm not sure I would want it to be as Vision.
elessarundomiel2382 - 6/2/2012, 7:30 AM
@jwsmith85 In terms of connections....Thor witnessed his own brother kill Coulson. Iron Man had a connection yes but so did Hawkeye and black Widow and they already get paid to do this. Captain America is someone who follows orders and he pretty much built a connection to Coulson through the movie with the cars and all. Hulk had the least connection but banner had a close relation to Stark so he owed him the respect of returning to unite. They all intended to fight the army nonetheless with or without Coulson's death. But it was important for Thor's relation with Loki for him to witness such an act by his brother.
elessarundomiel2382 - 6/2/2012, 7:35 AM
If Coulson IS alive cause let's face it there was NO funeral scene and no mention of him after the war he's not gonna be The Vision.

My Vote for the Vision is PAUL the stark tower scene where Coulson is trying to call Stark, Stark tell Jarvis "grow a spine" this obviously means (to have courage) BUT what if there's a hidden meaning WHAT IF Jarvis becomes the AI for The Vision's body, seen in the movie Captain America.
SekretSkwerl - 6/2/2012, 7:51 AM

Nick Fury - "I lost my one good eye."

Avengers2 - He gets his "vision" back.
DukeAcureds - 6/2/2012, 8:01 AM
TheVision was in Captain America - The First Avenger. His name is Jim Hammond.
Ranger14 - 6/2/2012, 8:03 AM
"Coulson IS DEAD!!!!. He is expired, an ex - agent, deceased, kicked the bucket, bought the farm, flying with the angels. DEAD Let him stay that way. Man, some fanboys just can't let things go."

It doesn't matter to me one way or the other, but when Fury was asked about Coulson, he avoided actually saying he was dead. It leaves the door open and he is still under contract for more films, so who knows.

"Yet, Agent Coulson, a man who was a behind the scenes character who didn't have very much time we any characters except Ironman, is used to suddenly bring everyone together."

I didn't view Coulson as being a "behind the scenes" character. Sure he didn't have a lot of screen time, but he was instrumental in the prior films in the recruiting process of the Avengers. Even though he didn't have a lot of screen time, the association that he was a key figure in bringing the Avengers together was pretty much assumed and understood by me.....and sometimes all it takes is one person to make people aware of something.
Chewtoy - 6/2/2012, 8:16 AM
The thing of it is, I can actually imagine a scenario where SHIELD would want to preserve some knowledge that Agent Coulson had, and thereby hustle his body off to record his brain engrams. Its also likely that SHIELD would have the deactivated Human Torch. These are the two components Ultron would need to create the Vision.

In the original comics, there was literally no reason for the Avengers to record Simon Williams' brain patterns... It was the sixties, and they just figured "what the hell, let's do it." Ultron obtained the Human Torch's body from a third source (The mad thinker? It's been ages since I've read it.) The film world already offers a solution that is much more elegant.

To do the Vision justice, someone needs to create Ultron, then Ultron needs to create the Vision using the brain patterns of someone who died heroically for the Avengers and the synthzoid built in WWII. As far as I'm concerned, it's not about "bringing back Coulson", although I'd be happy to have Clark Gregg play him. It's about giving us the Vision in the sequel, and taking advantage of the fact that a good deal of the groundwork is already done this way.
SCURVYDOG619 - 6/2/2012, 8:35 AM
Coulson's not dead. He's restin'. Pinin' for the fjords,he is...ROFL Someone do an Avengers version of that Python sketch ASAP!
sikwon - 6/2/2012, 8:41 AM
They didnt need the push, the avengers didnt need the push.... Tony and Cap needed the push. Thats why thy were the only two at the table. Thor was already in, he was going to battle and defend earth regardless plus when you come down to it thor is a soldier. The same with widow and hawkeye (i know widow is a spy but the budapest comment tells you she has seen her share of fire fights) plus they work with shield. The push was all about bringing tony and cap together, they balance each other in every way. Cap makes tony a better man and tony brings out the best in cap.Fury had to bring those two together in order to make the avengers work. .... "call it Captain."
MB007 - 6/2/2012, 8:42 AM

Dude, that gif is REALLY [frick]ing awesome!! :-D
Spider-Fan - 6/2/2012, 8:45 AM
What I took from Coulson's death was that he wasn't just a man who shared some time with each of them and when he dies the Avengers feel sorrow and unite, but Coulson represents where each of the Avengers have come from and the fact that even though they don't see it initially in each other, each hero is trying to avenge something in their lives and has a purpose for what they are doing. Stark is still trying to avenge all the soldiers his weapons helped kill but all Cap or Natasha sees is the cocky guy who made a fortune off of war profiteering. Thor is trying to make up for the the mistakes he made by causing almost-war in Asgard and prompting his brother to act this way but all Cap sees is a man who absurdly thinks of himself as a god, with Caps view tainted by how the Red Skull also thought of himself that way. Cap feels like he left all of his loved ones behind and is trying to be at peace with living in the present (in a way, avenging everyone he left behind) but all Stark sees is a broken man who people misguidedly look up to.

Everyone is so narrow minded and can't see beyond their own problems but once Coulson dies, a man that each hero has had time with, Coulson gives them a reason to start thinking about the each other and how they are feeling the same way and how they are all going through their journeys to avenge something. Now I'm not saying bringing Coulson back would undo the character growth of the Avengers but Coulson died forming the Avengers...what else could you possibly want from the character? As the Vision Coulson would only be a shadow of his former self. Let the character go. He had a great story with a great message, especially considering how little he was on the screen. Let a new character such as the Vision speak with his own voice and have his own character instead of making him have a ridiculous comeback "he never really died!" origin.
