Disney Announces That THE AVENGERS 2 Is In Development

Disney has just announced that a sequel to Marvel's The Avengers is now in active development. Hit the jump for details and a brief comment from Disney CEO Bob Iger on the success of the Joss Whedon helmed superhero ensemble.

There aren't a lot of details right now, but Deadline has revealed that Disney and Marvel Studios are now moving ahead with a sequel to box office hit, The Avengers. This isn't exactly a surprise considering the fact that it has broken record after record at the domestic and international box offices over the past two weeks and was met with almost universal acclaim from critics. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the news, saying that its success "is a great illustration of why we like Marvel so much." As for WHEN we'll see the sequel, start placing your bets now! 2014 seems far too soon, while 2015 or 2016 seems most likely.

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff/Black Widow
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson
Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill
Tom Hiddleston as Loki

And there was me thinking they were gonna call it quits after this one..
Gerrit - 5/8/2012, 2:17 PM
Who knows what can happen if Marvel Studios manage to build a hype for The Avengers 2 on the same level that they did for The Avengers and release it in December, like Avatar.

John Carter pt. 2 Sounds like a better idea to me. This movie was such a fail.
grifter - 5/8/2012, 2:26 PM
I wonder if they have Whedon locked for it?
FightAs0ne - 5/8/2012, 2:27 PM
^^^^Coming from the guy with the Thanos picture
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 5/8/2012, 2:27 PM
Hmmmmm, I believe someone wrote an article not too long ago, and predicted they would do this after the success of this film. Also, I remember a lot of people giving him shit for writing it...

I still stand by that Avengers 2 will happen before Captain America 2. Perhaps Thor 2 will get filmed, but you will not see an ant-man, Dr. Strange, Shield movie, etc. until they are done with the first three Avengers films. I still think it would be a wise move to film them back to back a la Pirates of the Caribbean .
jessepostal - 5/8/2012, 2:28 PM
I wish they could produce these movies faster, I'm getting a little ancy for cap 2!!
Mego - 5/8/2012, 2:30 PM
Dont know when it hits but Evans aint getting a break from Cap anytime soon. And Hemsworth the same with Thor.
KnobGoblin - 5/8/2012, 2:32 PM
No shit, is water wet too?
ElConvoy - 5/8/2012, 2:33 PM
The new Avengers movie will not be out before 2015. Iron man 3,Thor 2 and Captain America 2 have already set release dates and are in development.

jessepostal - 5/8/2012, 2:35 PM
@ridic, it's not gonna happen there just starting development on it. That means it could be as far as a splash logo of avengers 2 on a piece of paper. And I'm sure all party's involved have other work first
Bumble - 5/8/2012, 2:36 PM
obvious annoucement but i doubt we will be seeing this anytime soon...not unless they decide to release it the same year that they release cap as their "mystery" movie of that year. you know, have cap end on this cliff hanger and ten, a few months later...boom!...avengers 2 hits you so hard your great grandmother will feel.

more than likely it will be after cap 2 though. marvel's smart. they're not going to rush things. their going to build this slowly and really blow the lid of movie industry.

i think thor 2 ends with the infinity guantlet in the hands of thanos after thor and loki have some epic adventure thorught the nine realms trying to save loki's tail. avengers 2 will then show ol' thanos as the main villian and really have him unleash havoc as only he can do.
marvel72 - 5/8/2012, 2:36 PM
i didn't see that coming,XD hahahahahahah

great news, now give us some new members drop hawkeye & black widow if need be & replace them with any of the following vision, scarlet witch, quicksilver, hank pym or wasp.

the villain(s)

-masters of evil
bhorwith22 - 5/8/2012, 2:36 PM

I am excited. Change Cap's suit though.
DoIlookLIkeIGiveAFuk - 5/8/2012, 2:37 PM
enough with the avengers its been out for 5 days now its so old somebody needs to make a new guyver movie already
DoomXfactor - 5/8/2012, 2:37 PM
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah [frick] YEAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SonOfStarKiller - 5/8/2012, 2:38 PM
I'm sure A2 is about 2 years out from now and won't happen until after CA2 opens in theaters. The want to set the stage again the way they did for this one. Perhaps with IM2, Thor 2 and CA2 all directly tying in with each other ending with A2 as he big payoff! That would be awesome!
dmadtroll - 5/8/2012, 2:38 PM
yeah and they should try 2-3 movies a year. actors are real people too, they get old. sorry
Rhinoman - 5/8/2012, 2:38 PM
Hopefully 2016 with single Hulk and r Strange in 2015. Probably 2015 though
Xandera - 5/8/2012, 2:38 PM
Does a bear shit in the woods?
Of course they are gonna make a sequel...
$700,000,000 in 13 days...
Did anybody think they were gonna ignore that?
Now, let's get Whedon on board before he get's involved in something else... cause let's face it, after this, he is gonna be in demand...
GizmoEl - 5/8/2012, 2:38 PM
I'm hoping it's released in 2015
DoomXfactor - 5/8/2012, 2:39 PM
You gotta bring back Joss Whedon

mob7medina - 5/8/2012, 2:39 PM
I knew 2015 would be too long for Marvel to capitalize off this Giant of a Masterpiece of a movie..hell yess!!;p

Just got back from watching Avengers, and dear God, it was a dream come true. It wasn't perfect, but it was the most fun I've had in ages.
Chaplin - 5/8/2012, 2:42 PM
It just can't get any more obvious than this!
jazzman - 5/8/2012, 2:43 PM
we not surprise their going to be a sequel.
MasterApoc81 - 5/8/2012, 2:43 PM
they did this movie better than i thought they could...excellent movie and i love how they made thanos at the end ....brilliant ...he actually looked like thanos.......iron man was great ...hulk was great....cap was great ...thor was great but i would love them to use more of his powers ....heck they did good with widow and hawkeye and maria hill and nick fury they did great ...now they need to bring back joss wedon ....u cant knock it out the park like this and not have him on board ...heck he wrote the thing .....directed it ....he needs to be there along with all returning cast and i think its should involve odin a little bit more ...and leave loki in but not as the villian...and i think they should build more on thanos till third movie ..make him the antagnist of all this stufff till he finally decided to take matters into his own hands .....i say superskrull and some other baddies for next ....the earth pissed thanos off...now he is gonna try to destroy it
DoomXfactor - 5/8/2012, 2:43 PM
DanteSparda - 5/8/2012, 2:44 PM
Surely it won't come out for at least 3 years.

I'm betting they only started working in the script so the events of Avengers 2 could fit with the events of all the next Marvel movies before Avengers 2.

Also they could be making plans for the cast of Thanos as well, or at least his voice actor; I'm almost sure that Damion Poitier will not portray Thanos in the end, or at least not entirely.
CapFanLex005 - 5/8/2012, 2:44 PM
Maybe fox and sony will be like hey we should cash in and share rights with this guys....Marvel really knows how to do it.
