Joss Whedon And Jonathan Eusebio Discuss The Epic Final Battle In MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS

In the following video interview, director Joss Whedon and fight coordinator Jonathan Eusebio look back at the epic battle in the film which pits Earth's Mightiest Heroes against Loki and his alien army.

In an interview with MTV Splash Page, director Joss Whedon has revealed the difficulties behind helming the epic final battle between the team and Loki's army which takes place on the streets of Manhattan, New York. "The final battle is not small. It really was a task to make sure that everybody was working at their particular power level, and every now and then we had to adjust things because there are things that Cap can do Hawkeye can't, and Thor can do that Cap can't, and Hulk can do that Thor can't. You've just got to make sure that you stay true to their realities."

"Not only did we have doubles for all the actors, but for Loki's army, we had a whole crop of stunt men, 10 to 12 core guys," adds Jonathan Eusebio, the fight coordinator for the superhero ensemble. "All we did is choreograph huge action pieces for the whole last sequence. When that sequence actually came up, we already had really good pieces choreographed and rehearsed with most of the actors and the stunt people."

Whedon recently revealed that he had to write the script while filming, and Eusebio confirms that putting the fight scenes together also involved a similar amount of pressure. "There were some days that were tough and we had to make stuff up on the spot, and not just individual one-on-one type pieces. It would be pieces where it's eight-on-one, and the actors would pick it up on the spot, that day. I was pretty proud of the fact that they could adapt to changes on the spot. There's a Thor-Captain America team-up in the street, that one we pieced together pretty quick the day before we were going to shoot it. I think that turned out really good."

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff/Black Widow
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson
Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill
Tom Hiddleston as Loki

first...yeah the action was top notch seeingit again for the 4th time tomorrow
ThanToast - 5/4/2012, 3:48 PM
I noticed that for an action movie, the choreography and fighting was exceptionally great!
Spidey91 - 5/4/2012, 3:51 PM
the final battle was 30 minutes long...and it felt short! I didn't wanted it to end,I wanted more blasting and smashing! :P
BrotherStarkofMABMindz - 5/4/2012, 3:52 PM
That last action sequence was a great final battle for this movie, it gave it the feel of a war movie. I seen the movie twice already and my head is exploding with an overflow of epicness. Cannot wait for the DVD, sequel, man this movie is so great.

Joss Whedon is a boss
NOID - 5/4/2012, 3:54 PM
The final battle was epic, and i've mentioned this i think a few times, but there is a single shot that follows each of the heros and it's incredible
MrRogers - 5/4/2012, 3:54 PM
Hulk vs loki pound for pound best cbm fight lol
TheRationalOne - 5/4/2012, 3:56 PM
I had to cut my fight scene with the Avengers in my video cuz I beat em too badly. Hehehehe...
TheRationalOne - 5/4/2012, 3:57 PM
And I refused to watch the vid cuz enough has been spoiled for me already. Seeing it tonight at 11:30. BOOM!!!
Kingdork - 5/4/2012, 3:58 PM
Too bad the Cap Thor team up they mentioned was heavily cut. Still an awesome climax tough.
djKiDDvIcIOUs - 5/4/2012, 4:03 PM
Ya this movie is the shiznit
NOLANITE - 5/4/2012, 4:06 PM
Too bad the so called "epic" fight scene resembled The Scrap metal vs scrap metal behemoth scene in Transformers 3. It was Nothing new really. Substitute a bunch of Dressed up guys for large CGI robots and its Idealy the same.

Nothing new that hasnt been done before. I do got to admit seeing Hulk catch Stark from the sky and into the building was Neat in a way.
THORGodOfThunder - 5/4/2012, 4:08 PM
Less than 4 hours till movie time!!!!!!!
MarkV - 5/4/2012, 4:22 PM
Avengers is an outstanding film in many, many ways....but the troll Nolanite touches on something that does ring a little true. The final battle, unfortunately, has a few exterior scenes that look very similar to some of the Transformers films. There are many aspects to the battle that are different, so don't worry if you haven't seen the film. The final battle is still very enjoyable, even for someone like me that is not a big Transformers fan.
Turtlestrong - 5/4/2012, 4:22 PM
All I know was that I was geeking out with all of the shots of the team working together and helping each other. I thought I was watching The Avengers cartoon for a second. Not that I mean that in a bad way.
MarkV - 5/4/2012, 4:23 PM
Also, I would point out to "Nolanite" that the film was in production before Transformers 3 came out, so they are not exactly copying that film.
TheRationalOne - 5/4/2012, 4:28 PM
Having not seen it yet (11:30 tonight, PST), I'll take anything from a guy with "Nolanite" as a name with a gallon of salt. Jesus really? THE DARK KNIGHT RISES TRAILERS HAVE ALL BEEN SNOOZE-FESTS!!! And I LOVE Nolans Batman movies, but you cant honestly compare the two. Ones a Superhero movie the way superhero movies were made to be, and one is a dramatic crime noir thriller with a superhero instead of a private eye. Incomparable.
TheRationalOne - 5/4/2012, 4:28 PM
I know you didn't "technically" compare the two, but you know its in the back of your head...I can see it there.
AlexDeLarge87 - 5/4/2012, 4:30 PM
Gotta say thou...
I would have love to see The Skrulls as the army more than Chitauri.
Shapeshifters just strikes me more. :)
MarkV - 5/4/2012, 4:33 PM
Yeah, skrulls would've been money, but we have some more films coming our way, hell yeah!
mrHJK - 5/4/2012, 4:38 PM
The final battle was definitely the best part of the film
TruePunishment - 5/4/2012, 5:20 PM
No, the epic Hulk/Loki fight was the best hahaha!
Tymminator - 5/4/2012, 5:30 PM
I love this movie.
thewonderer - 5/4/2012, 5:38 PM

TDKR trailers have been fantastic

Anyway saw this movie and loved it. Brilliant fight scene at the end. The best ever in any CBM hands down. I had problems with the beginning and ending though, everything in between is virtually flawless.

I'd give it an 8.5/10. Thors personality sort of is undercut, Pepper Potts is practically useless screen time, the beginning is boring, and the ending seems rushed.

I still call TDK my favorite CBM of all time...but I adored this movie to no end
RogueMonk - 5/4/2012, 7:13 PM
The ending was truly epic but I guess you can't have anything that looks remotely like a transformer of any kinds destroying a city or people say they ripped off Bay. It's stupid.
angus666 - 5/4/2012, 7:26 PM
When Hulk smashes Loki like a ragdoll... That is an incredible moment.

Tony/Iron Man is and was always my favorite. He's hilarious in this and Iron Man is awesome. Perfect movie.
maito - 5/4/2012, 8:44 PM
there's a good reason Transformers and Avengers to look similar, they hired the same artist.
KeithM - 5/4/2012, 8:51 PM
MTV is racist. Cannot view.
DioFoRio - 5/4/2012, 9:01 PM
there's one little difference from T3 and the Avengers last scene...[frick]ING 6 Superheros doing the ass kicking. Avengers was a gotdam blast from start to finish. Feel bad for the people going in and knowing they were going to hate it. But from the people that loved it, we say thank you for contributing to the budget for the sequel
FireKnightRises - 5/4/2012, 9:23 PM
I'm dissapointed that chitauri is robot, I thought its really alien
Fogs - 5/4/2012, 9:31 PM
Lol, the only thing Avengers reminds Transformers is that they fight in NY streets.

I think Bay is shitty in every way. His action scenes are so fast and shaky you can't see a thing. Avengers was well shot, well coreographed and above all, you can tell what's going on onscreen.

No comparisons. Nolanite tried to diminish the movie with a baaad argument.
ClarkFarley2012 - 5/4/2012, 10:15 PM
Just came from watching this. Awesome movie. The Imax and 3d experience was awesome. Every character got enough time to shine on screen. BTW..TDKR trailer was awesome. Hell my wife said she waited to see TASM! Enjoy peeps! The Avengers was worth the wait!!
thalidomide - 5/4/2012, 10:30 PM
lol. transformers again? is that the best you can do? morons.
figuresmaniac - 5/4/2012, 10:54 PM
"I'm dissapointed that chitauri is robot, I thought its really alien"

What movie did u watch?
MisterBabadook - 5/4/2012, 11:03 PM
First of all, re-edits of All 3 Transformers films w/ the human dialouge taken out would yield a more pleasant viewing experience and secondly, Avengers was good.
Like I said 4/5. It's great and fun, but man that post credits scene was sooooo out of place. I get it. Don't say I dont get the reference. Schawarma. But I really wish they threw in that Rogers/Carter scene they kept talking about. I thought the one thing this movie lacked was a PROFOUND final impression. Something that resonated. If the scene was as beautiful as they say... I think what I mean is, I would've liked the final impression to give you a warmth that I thought Captain America set the bar SO high with, that The Avengers Assemble was clearly missing (yet tried to bring w/ the Coulson character, I don't knock Gregg's performance at all).
GrayMatter - 5/4/2012, 11:57 PM
What?? There was a big action set piece in this movie? Cleary it must be a rip-off of Michael Bay. No other movies have big action scenes other than Transformers.

But seriously, Dionysios hit the nail on the head. The huge difference between the two is that we actually saw superheroes and the characters in the movie fighting, instead of just a bunch of random explosions and stuff.
gurugeorge - 5/5/2012, 3:28 AM
Although I love the film to bits, the "look" of the Chitauri, especially the leviathan things, I do think is Transformer-ish.

Since the Transformers films, a lot of aliens in movies have had a similar look - as if you dragged a magnet through a junkyard - and I don't really like that look.

But apart from a few niggles like that and a few plot and continuity glitches, it's a fantastic CBM. Up there with my favourites (the first two Spidey films, IM, TDK, etc.), and in some respects (mainly in the fx representing the over-the-top action of comics) is actually the best CBM so far.
EarOne - 5/5/2012, 6:35 AM
man, so sick of the transformers-avengers comparison. ENOUGH already!! for those who still think this to be the case is a MORON. period.

now, that outta the one nitpick bout the actions scenes..i wish the scene where thor calls down the thunder from the top of the chrysler building..and brings down all the alien just seems a little lacking a bit. i dunno..but, ever since i saw that similar scene first depicted in the Ultimates, vol. 1, i just was expecting a whole lot more. but, it was fine..just lacking that extra oomph in that overall scene.
MrZoolittle - 5/5/2012, 6:40 AM
the final scene was fun but far from epic. It was the same ending in transformers 3.
TheDarkAvengersRises - 5/5/2012, 3:57 PM
The first installment of this trilogy served it's purpose of leaving Marvel fans drooling for more. Similar to all first installments (Batman Begins), the action isn't going to be mind-blowing. By the time Avengers 2 comes out, the movie will be all ACTION, since Part one served as an introductory film into the trilogy.
