Joss Whedon Feels Strongly About THE AVENGERS 2 Story And Its Main Villain

Boasting his excitement for sequel's story, which he feels "strongly" about, writer-director Joss Whedon vaguely teased the new main villain of the much-awaited reassembly of The Avengers, and more.

The latest issue of Empire magazine features yet another lengthy Joss Whedon Q&A, with the Much Ado About Nothing director discussing his acclaimed take on the Shakespeare tale and, surely, the anticipated follow-up to Marvel's The Avengers. Though it seems the interview was conducted before the writer-director began boasting the 2015 sequel's new characters, Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver, Joss Whedon teases the next bad guy to villainize Earth's mightiest heroes.

"I turned in an outline for Avengers 2 before we started [Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D]," Joss said after being asked about his busy schedule. "So I'm writing that script. I feel very strongly about the story, so as soon as the pilot is fully wrapped up, I get to go full-tilt on that, and I'm very excited." Explaining how he'll avoid usual sequel pit-falls, where the story becomes all about the villain, Whedon says, "Yes, that always makes me cranky. I'm very excited about the villain, and have a lot to say about him. But if you watch my shows," Whedon assures, "the one thing I've never been very good at is guest stars, because I've always been so interested in the ensemble. With The Avengers, I'm still most fascinated by them. How do these guys feel, and what's the way they conflict, and what's the unexpected way they connect? Forming a team is one story; being a team is a very different story. The other thing is, you don't try to top it. I know I will never make as pleasing a moment in a film as Hulk and Loki. You can't chase that dragon. If you try to do exactly the same thing, the chances you're going to do it better are very slim, and the only reason for me to devote three years to making another Avengers movie is the hope of making a better one."

So far starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, with Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, Marvel's The Avengers untitled sequel is written and directed by Joss Whedon, and starts shooting early next year for a May 1, 2015, release date.

I'm sure it'll be great. Now scractch off Scarlett and Quicksilver and add better heroes
Supes17 - 5/25/2013, 2:27 PM
I hope Ruffalo gets more screentime as Hulk. he was my favorite character
TonyChu - 5/25/2013, 2:28 PM
Everybody quiet and let the master work. Joss Whedon is the man.

Better huh? Well, I'm causiously optimistic as of now. Marvel is still coming out with decent to good movies and phase 2 has a lot of potential.

Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver were avengers before black panther and ms Marvel. Heroes for hire aren't part of the Avengers, but maybe for Avengers 3 they have the New Avengers step in. Hell, by then there will be over 20 superheroes (sarcasm) maybe they'll all be the the third one. Lol
ManofSteel23 - 5/25/2013, 2:31 PM
give tony his bloody reactor back some where in that story too!
DrDoom - 5/25/2013, 2:31 PM
The villain is a him.

Supes17 - 5/25/2013, 2:32 PM
Tony's reactor made him more interesting and vulnerable. Knowing that he could die at any moment. i wish they hadn't taken that away.
Supes17 - 5/25/2013, 2:33 PM
Dr. Doom would be badass
but I wouldn't want Fox to put him in X:Men at the last minute
LEVITIKUZ - 5/25/2013, 2:35 PM
Doom is lame though.
113 - 5/25/2013, 2:36 PM
His primary task is to clean up the mess that Shane Black left, a big pile of steaming mess.
LMFA0 - 5/25/2013, 2:39 PM

You have no clue how the movie will play out after the rest of phase 2 unfolds. Questions may be answered and things may get cleared up. In the context of just iron man 3, yeah it's kinda a mess. But the movie was funny and actually pretty good. With cap 2 and Thor maybe answering questions about "plot holes" in iron man 3. Oh well, I could be wrong

Words of wisdom.

A him huh? THANOS, Kang, Korvac, Baron Zemo, or maybe even Ultron comes to mind.
FOOM - 5/25/2013, 2:41 PM
The Vision and Black Panther need to be in this.
SageMode - 5/25/2013, 2:42 PM
HIM? Oh yeah, definitely Thanos.

You think Doom is a lame villain?

-_- ..................................................................
OrgasmicPotatoe - 5/25/2013, 2:42 PM
@Gettastic He said Hulk and Loki, not Thor :P Talking about the "Puny God" scene.
Inhuman - 5/25/2013, 2:42 PM
I think the best way to introduce Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch is to have them be Inhumans and they get their powers from the Terrigen Mist. Quicksilver has used the Terrigen Mist in the comics to repower himself and he actually marries Crystal who is Medusa's sister and has a half Inhuman child named Luna. Plus you can also connect Scarlet Witch to Doctor Strange and the whole eye of agamotto thing since shes a sorceress. I for one think the Inhuman origin story is a brilliant idea to explain Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch since they cant use the mutant origin story.

Korvac is my prediction.

I get jittery thinking about this film
I have faith Whedon will deliver....again
JerBear - 5/25/2013, 2:43 PM
He didn't say Hulk vs. Thor he said Hulk vs. Loki
Inhuman - 5/25/2013, 2:43 PM
If Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are the new recruits in Avengers 2 when its all said and done, then its most likely that Ant-Man, Wasp, Black Panther, and Vision are the new recruits in Avengers 3
Inhuman - 5/25/2013, 2:45 PM
Avengers 2 - Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver

Avengers 3 - Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Wasp, Vision
gmoney0505 - 5/25/2013, 2:49 PM
Too bad I dont feel strongly about the story since Avenger's 1 story was average at best and the villains were the weakest villains ever created.
DrDoom - 5/25/2013, 2:51 PM

Vision sucks gimme Ms. Marvel
Supes17 - 5/25/2013, 2:54 PM
I really wanted to see Black Panther or a female Avenger other than Scarlet Witch.

I don't want the mutants in Avengers if they have to completely change or negate their origin. That would be robbing them of their essence. That's like having a Superman with no mention of his kryptonian heritage or Thor without a connection/mention of Asgard. It's part of who they are. They are nototrious BECAUSE of their relation to Magneto
Emjeed - 5/25/2013, 2:58 PM
I like what I'm hearing. I'm picking up what you're putting down Mr. Whedon

Whoever The Villain Is, He'll Be Epic.
California - 5/25/2013, 2:58 PM
Big bold goal to do better and I'm glad he's striving to do so. Yeah, he's got to keep the bitching and SNARK way in check but great job on everything so far.
Inhuman - 5/25/2013, 2:58 PM

Vision does not suck. Vision is a longtime Avenger. If Ant-Man and Wasp are gonna be in the Avengers then there should be no reason why Vision shouldnt be in it. Ms. Marvel is cool too and I would love for her to be in the Avengers. I just dont see it happening until after Phase 3
Inhuman - 5/25/2013, 3:00 PM

Especially since Scarlet Witch is in the Avengers now you have to have Vision eventually
DrDoom - 5/25/2013, 3:04 PM
Vision has always seemed useless to me.
NightDevil1939 - 5/25/2013, 3:05 PM
I'd like to see The Grim Reaper as an Avengers villain at some point - someone who honestly thinks the Avengers are responsible for the death of a family member (unless they go with the traditional Wonder Man story) and is driven to destroy them. It'd be different enough from Loki and the Chitauri's drive to take over the world.
thewolfx - 5/25/2013, 3:11 PM
Im still tryin to figure why ppl want quicksilver aka poormans flash and scarlett bitch over the likes of bp or vision or antman
JoeMomma29 - 5/25/2013, 3:18 PM
Lets hope it is Ultron!
AztecRainGod - 5/25/2013, 3:22 PM
Great Story , Terrific Villain.

The Anti-IM3.
Supes17 - 5/25/2013, 3:23 PM
Let's just pretend Iron Man 3 didn't happen...
GeekyCheekyChic - 5/25/2013, 3:24 PM
Red Skull leading Hydra 2.0 and AIM extremis soldiers. Toss in Crossbones Abomination MODOK and Madame Hydra possibly Kurse.
Whatever happens I am there at the IMAX midnight show
Scorpion8125 - 5/25/2013, 3:24 PM
Whedon will give us greatness.

Thanos and Ultron MUST be in our future.

Those who want Kree/Skrulls, etc. I kinda don't.

I am kinda tired of alien invasion of Earth beaten back at last minute by heroes thing.

Give me Thanos setting everyone against everyone everywhere scenario where he is behind the scenes on a quest to destroy all life in the cosmos. Getting civilizations & planets all fighting each other while he pulls a sneaky Pete on the whole universe.

Of course, then all the good guys & bad guys gotta attack him together to stop him.

Hulk smash! BOOM!!!!!!

AztecRainGod - 5/25/2013, 3:28 PM
Ultron would make sense, only if Ant Man had come out before A2.

Now heres an idea.....Whedon is adding two mutant Avengers in this movie, what if the Villain is also a mutant?

Apocalypse, anyone? (This would be the ultimate counter punch to Bryan Singer and Fox)

DrDoom - 5/25/2013, 3:28 PM
I still can't believe people are hating on Iron Man 3 on a thread that has nothing to do with the movie.

Oh well, I guess they can't keep the film out of their minds.
