Joss Whedon On THE AVENGERS Climax & Sequel; Steve Rogers' POV No Longer Story's Focus

Joss Whedon On THE AVENGERS Climax & Sequel; Steve Rogers' POV No Longer Story's Focus

Touching on the film's "enormous" climax, as well as plans for The Avengers sequel, Joss Whedon reveals Captain America's point-of-view won't be centralized as planned. Check it out!

Considering the summer blockbuster is near-completed, Joss Whedon has been able to talk more freely and mindfully about Marvel's The Avengers; as showcased with the many interviews during SXSW weekend. And now, the writer-director has offered up even more deets in the latest issue of Total Film magazine.

Having such a wide variety of characters, initially Whedon sought focus by telling the story largely from one person's perspective; defrosted WW2 super-soldier Captain America. "That was the plan anyway". However, "In the final cut that's probably not true," Whedon reveals. "There was stuff with Cap I cut out. Although he has an 'in' with the audience in that this world is stranger to him, so he's an identification figure."

The climax Whedon pitched Marvel was so enormous that it was apparent there wouldn't be enough time or money to pull it off, "But that's exactly what we shot," he reveals. The scale is "quite large", but it's not about that. "Its the toll it takes," Whedon says. "I find superhero movies to be a little too neat. And when you have Earth's mightiest heroes - like Thor, you know Thor! - you have to put them in a situation that makes you feel like they're not all going to make it." "The climax of this movie isn't one where you go, 'Oh yes, there's the Avengers, good for them, bye!'" When it all hits, it hits hard."

Whedon then went on to discuss The Avengers potential sequel, essentially revealing that he went all-out to avoid Iron Man 2 syndrome, where the story's reduced to a series of sequel-pointers. "We DO give a nod to a greater problem than the one solved in this film." says Whedon. "I'm a great believer in the idea that if you make the first one to be a 'first one,' then you have already failed," asserts Whedon. "As much as we want to service the idea of a film in a franchise, I want this to be a satisfying film experience. I don't want people to go out saying, "When's the next part?" I want people to say, "Oh, I want to see that again!"

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”--the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, & directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble on May 4, 2012. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. damn! hope the film isnt worse cos of the cuts, which will hopefully be on special editions
dbapz - 3/13/2012, 1:39 PM
I'm getting a little worried. I hope Whedon's vision comes through after all the cuts.

I liked the idea about it coming from Cap's POV, it made sense
DaenerysTargaryen - 3/13/2012, 1:39 PM
Let me guess it will focus on RDJ instead :P
golden123 - 3/13/2012, 1:40 PM
This is great news to those who don't really like Captain America that much, like me.

SOUNDS E P i C !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Toasty - 3/13/2012, 1:40 PM
Joss Whedon - the one man PR wonder, seriously everything this guy has said over the past week has been music to my ears.
Mrcool210 - 3/13/2012, 1:41 PM
it better not come from iron mans point of view, i dont want iron man and friends
cmax - 3/13/2012, 1:42 PM
I was really looking forward to the Cap POV, mostly because I think Marvel really needs to hammer home that he IS the leader. I really hope classic Captain America leadership shines through in Avengers. Didn't quite buy him as the leader we know and love in TFA. Hope they rectify that!

Nice.. Very nice..
HeyVanity - 3/13/2012, 1:44 PM
I've always been a huge fan of him, but I'm surprised to see just how perfect everything seems to have come together. He hasn't said one damn thing to make me doubt this movie. So exciting :D

I love this man.
MB007 - 3/13/2012, 1:46 PM
I'm can't wait for that epic climax!! :-D
PhetVanBurt0n - 3/13/2012, 1:46 PM
well since he says he wants a smaller sequel, they should start telling the story of Thanos on the second one and end it on an EPIC 3rd film
sexfoodcomics - 3/13/2012, 1:47 PM
Everyone needs to relax. I know people that have seen it in its close to 3 hour form and even they said a lot needs to be cut ou to tighten it up. Wheadon knows what he is doing , this movie will be tight and there want be scenes that feel like they are forced into it.
PhetVanBurt0n - 3/13/2012, 1:47 PM
maybe even film them back-to-back n have them released a year apart 2015 & 2016
Hawksblueyes - 3/13/2012, 1:47 PM
I'm not worried at all. This could be a silent movie and I would still be happy.
sexfoodcomics - 3/13/2012, 1:49 PM
I hope Thanos is in the second and Ultron in the 3rd
Wildaniel - 3/13/2012, 1:53 PM
I really hope he didnt cut out this scene!!!!!!!!

HelaGood - 3/13/2012, 1:53 PM
his wings are suffering from shrinkage...
Coldblood6 - 3/13/2012, 1:54 PM
I'm a bit worried now.

Studio interference may have reared it's head and made him change it from a CAP POV narrative to an IRON MAN one, which in itself would be disappointing. What even more worrying to me is that if in editing you've changed your entire movie POV does the movie work as well?

I'm concerned.

Agent Coulson also says "Director Fury" in the latest trailer.
marvel72 - 3/13/2012, 2:05 PM
the avengers - directors cut would be nice to see on the blu-ray or at least 45 minutes of deleted scenes.
Christuffer - 3/13/2012, 2:11 PM
Sounds like we got the perfect man for the job
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 3/13/2012, 2:15 PM
Well only about a month until reviews start trickling in. You can still tell Whedon is a little bit bitter about missing out on other franchises when he calls super hero films to be a little dull. Still like how he is calling out the competition. Should be a fun summer, and I can't wait to see this flick.
FrankGarret - 3/13/2012, 2:15 PM
Fury introduced himself to Cap as Colonel Nick Fury in the deleted scenes.
SupermanFan09 - 3/13/2012, 2:15 PM
@Gusto...with 70 years of buildup and no fap sessions...i believe you mean a few seconds lol

wow fail!! XD
TheGambitFreak - 3/13/2012, 2:20 PM
marvel72 Me too. Hope there is a ton of extra deleted scenes so some editing virtuoso can mash it in with the film and post a download link, ugh, that would be sweet!

GeekyCheekyChic - 3/13/2012, 2:22 PM
still sounds all good- bought my marathon may 3rd ticket so bring on climax!
FrankGarret - 3/13/2012, 2:23 PM
CATFA was my favorite of the bunch, but even I admit that it suffered because it just had to get Cap to the present to be in the Avengers.

He's got a more pressing need for his own subplot than the others, with finding out about Peggy and the rest of his friends.

I hope that's at least somewhat addressed, because if the closest thing he gets to a subplot is something concerning Tony's daddy issues, I will be most cross.
eleven59 - 3/13/2012, 2:24 PM
Hustler? Nah he wouldn't know what that is... Perhaps "Oh La La" though ;)
CoolantTech - 3/13/2012, 2:32 PM
oooooo I soo Hope to God the main focus wont be on Ironman he already has 2 movies and a 3rd comin out next year, I really don't think that would be Joss's style to do something like that though, Hopefully all the characters will get equal screen time, actually if its anybodies movie I think its Thors.. not the character but mainly his universe, you know that whole space element which includes Loki, the Aliens, the cosmic cube, and probably some easter eggs we have yet to see.
mgeoff88 - 3/13/2012, 2:32 PM
I guess, that's for the better. If the movie was solely from Cap's POV, it might have meant less screen time for everyone else.

A nod to a greater problem? Thanos maybe? I'm sure the Infinity Gauntlet will used in a movie. Or why would they bother making the prop?

@HelaGood Better his wings than his...

LAXtremest - 3/13/2012, 2:33 PM
I really can't be anymore pumped for this movie. Come on May!
Asterisk - 3/13/2012, 2:40 PM
Is it just me, or is this sounding like the superhero version of Mass Effect 3?
breakUbatman - 3/13/2012, 2:43 PM
This guy, no matter what the Avengers would have to end tidy, you can't bring them together just to destroy them plus the fact that Cap, Iron Man and Thor are slated for sequels. Maybe the shield members might bite the bullet but not the big guns
PapaEmeritus - 3/13/2012, 2:44 PM
Fine by me. I think Evans is a mediocre actor, even worse with that weird helmet on. Will be better this way i guess.
