Joss Whedon On The Introduction Of You-Know-Who In THE AVENGERS Mid-Credits Scene

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and director Joss Whedon discuss the introduction of a certain someone in the mid-credits scene of Marvel's The Avengers and drop a few hints as to where we might see him next. [WARNING: Major Spoilers Ahead]

Talking to /Film, Kevin Feige has revealed that it was in fact Joss Whedon's idea to introduce Thanos in the mid-credits scene of Marvel's The Avengers. Unfortunately, neither would reveal exactly where he'll turn up next, but Feige had this to say about non-fans possibly not recognising a character who is best know to comic book readers. "All of our tags are sort of like that. If you don’t know who Nick Fury is, that’s just Sam Jackson in an eye mask at the end and somebody is going to tell you who it is. That really spread. So I think Thanos will be the same way. During the premiere last night there were two guys behind me, I don’t know who they were, when Thanos turned around they went “Oh my God, it’s that… What’s his name? I can’t remember his name, but he’s that… Oh my God.” So you know clearly in the way it’s presented, it’s somebody important, so “ask somebody.” But don’t spoil that"

Regardless of the Thor 2 suggestions (Thanos's lackey did say that there would be repercussions for Loki if he failed) it sounds as if Whedon is a big enough fan that he might just choose to use him again in future should he return for The Avengers 2. If nothing else, he's certainly a big fan of the Jim Starlin creation. "He for me is the most powerful and fascinating Marvel villain. He’s the great grand daddy of the badasses and he’s in love with death and I just think that’s so cute. For me, the greatest Avengers was THE AVENGERS annual that Jim Starlin did followed by THE THING 2 in 1 that contained the death of Adam Warlock. Those were some of the most important texts and I think underrated milestones in Marvel history and Thanos is all over that, so somebody had to be in control and had to be behind Loki’s work and I was like “It’s got to be Thanos.” And they said “Okay” and I’m like “Oh my God!”"

The site also mentions that Feige hinted that we may not see their plans for Thanos come to fruition until the planned Guardians of the Galaxy film. While Joss Whedon is clearly a BIG fan of the villain, the character does seem to be the perfect choice in helping Marvel Studios expand their cosmic universe. Man people were amazed by the after credit scene when I went, but as soon as it was over people were googling the hell out of their phones.

"...he’s in love with death and I just think that’s so cute."

Superheromoviefan - 5/7/2012, 10:44 AM
non-fans are dumasses
one of them asked if he was hellboy!
TonyChu - 5/7/2012, 10:44 AM
Does this mean we get Adam Warlock and Captain Marvell in the future movies?

Just last week I found the Gauntlet in Thor. I had heard people say it was there, but I never could find it..and then, WOW. It was just like half a second, but dang.
Gerrit - 5/7/2012, 10:54 AM
@MrSuperheromoviefan, a friend of mine wandered if it was Hellboy. But that's not the worst. Another friend of mine wandered if Hellboy was the villain in CATFA when he saw it.
superotherside - 5/7/2012, 10:54 AM
That was just great. Although he should get the Gauntlet until at least Avengers 3 if not Avengers 4 or 5. Way too many villains to skip over to just jump to Thanos. Such as:
Masters of Evil
Civil War story line (It could be done before Thanos, possibly explain that they have a much bigger threat to face instead of fighting each other? At least I think that would be cool.)
Namor (I don't think he's with Fox or Universal any more. I think he's at Marvel Studios.)
Yeah, so that's just a few villains they could do. Personally Thanos is the ace in the hole for the Marvel Universe so they shouldn't play their best card just yet. Hold off for a while. :D Still that doesn't mean that he can't be a villain. He just doesn't need to get the Gauntlet with all the gems just yet. :)
jbak368 - 5/7/2012, 10:54 AM
Loki failed to get him the Tesseract... maybe he goes after Loki and finds something better... something we already know is in Odin's trophy room...
CCWGGuy - 5/7/2012, 10:56 AM
I think including a picture of Thanos right under the Spoiler Warning is freaking hilarious! LOL As soon as they see the warning it is too late!
Spidey91 - 5/7/2012, 10:57 AM

I think he wanted the Cube to enter Asgard and then get the Gauntlet.

@ superotherside Jesus christ! Avengers 4 or 5, I should have a wife and kid by that time. That would be amazing if they do get to four films.
StrangerX - 5/7/2012, 10:59 AM
Thanos will try something less direct.

Well, not if you notice the spoiler warning in the article headline on the main page
Asterisk - 5/7/2012, 11:02 AM
I heard somebody say they could see the Gauntlet on Thanos' hand. Which doesn't make sense.
SpiderFan35 - 5/7/2012, 11:03 AM
My wife's friend asked why there was a purple Hulk at the end, lol! Good times with the non-fan folk.

I also overheard one theatre staff member saying to another "they always sit and wait until after the credits in these movies" ha ha. They can't start cleaning up until everyone is gone.
Marveluffugus - 5/7/2012, 11:03 AM
We need an AofA movie...
SpiderFan35 - 5/7/2012, 11:05 AM
@CCWGGuy: It's May 7, if someone hasn't seen it by now they are on the wrong site ;)
Ha1frican - 5/7/2012, 11:07 AM
Pretty sure Loki's staff was the mind infinity gem which would explain how he took control of people, and why he could make everyone so angry on the helicarrier and why it ended up in Bruce's hand
Equivocal - 5/7/2012, 11:07 AM
Marvel is just setting up their upcoming movies, I don't think they will use one of their MOST powerful villains anytime soon.
There are a lot of BIG & IMPORTANT characters to bring to the big screen yet.

Trust me they are just setting future franchaises !
jessepostal - 5/7/2012, 11:09 AM
@spidey, death is thanos's women ha. A buddy of mine thought thanos was a super skrull
SmellofDuty - 5/7/2012, 11:11 AM
I say why introduce him if he isn't going to be used soon? I say Thanos in Avengers 2 or 3. The other should be Civil War.
BooYah - 5/7/2012, 11:18 AM
I really wish that we'd get Avengers 2 sooner. How is Iron Man 3, Cap 2, and Thor 2 going to live up to what Avengers gave us?
soforizo - 5/7/2012, 11:18 AM
Didn't know who the hell he was. At first I thought it was Red Skull, but his comments didn't make sense. I still know fairly little of the Marvel Universe, so I'll have to look him up.
MB007 - 5/7/2012, 11:21 AM
The Avengers 2 must come now!!!! :-D
jj72 - 5/7/2012, 11:22 AM
I wanted to kick one of my friends who isn't a comic book reader except for the cartoons on tv. He asked me "is that Apoklips or Darkeid"!!??

TheGodOfMischief - 5/7/2012, 11:23 AM
I didn't see Voldemort in the Mid-Credit scene!!!!! LMAO Just Kidding!
With the title of this article I couldn't resist.
SpiderFan35 - 5/7/2012, 11:23 AM
@jessepostal: Yeah I heard people whispering that too.

@Gusto: lol, where do you find this stuff!

I wish I'd found this one on May 4th.

soforizo - 5/7/2012, 11:24 AM
@SpiderFan35 - It's May 7, if someone hasn't seen it by now they are on the wrong site ;)

Well, the movie has been out since late April here in Mexico, and I only felt motivated to go see it yesterday for the first time. So maybe some people will try catching it in its 2nd weekend as well. Granted, my motivation was to avoid being spoiled more than I have already, but you get the point.
TheDetectiveComicRises - 5/7/2012, 11:28 AM
It was incredible to to that scene I would luv to see something similar in a Justice League movie one day with Darkseid! I love both DC & Marvel!
BoosterGold1991 - 5/7/2012, 11:29 AM
When i first saw the scene with Thanos i was like... Wow! and then i was thinking about a scene from Captain America, when the tesseract transported Red Skull somwhere into space but i realized that he was not in this one.
soforizo - 5/7/2012, 11:30 AM
@DudeGuyMan, yes he did look a little red to me. But admittedly aside of Spider-man and the Hulk, I knew nothing of the MCU prior to these series of movies. Didn't know Iron Man, Thor and I only think I had heard the name Captain America before, but didn't recognize him. I'm catching up quickly, but there was no freaking way I'd know this Thanos character.
sexfoodcomics - 5/7/2012, 11:34 AM
I couldn't notice if the gauntlet was on his hand or not. Maybe it was but all the gems weren't in it. Thanos obviously gave Loki the Mind gem to use to mind control hawk eye and the rest of them.
DrStrangeFan - 5/7/2012, 11:35 AM
I wonder what the secret Marvvel Project is..any guesses
sexfoodcomics - 5/7/2012, 11:35 AM
@greengo. What book is that from with all the pictures of the artifacts?
