Joss Whedon Reveals THE AVENGERS Official Runtime

Joss Whedon's superhero extravaganza The Avengers will be over two hours long, but how many additional minutes are audiences in store for?

While talking to Collider director Joss Whedon opened up about the runtime of Marvel's The Avengers. He says the first cut was about three hours long, but has been cut down. And if you're hoping to see a longer director's cut, don't count on it. He is very adamant that the final cut is the best cut:

“No [there won’t be a director’s cut on the DVD]. I… believe very strongly in putting
the director’s cut into the theaters. I believe that the director’s cut is the best movie for
the studio and the best version of the movie for the audience."

“My first cut was three hours long and it’s now down to 2 hours and 15 minutes, and I’m extremely proud of that. I had always intended to go over two, under two and a half. There was no way a movie with this many great actors and this much epic scope was gonna clock in under two and not feel a little anemic, somebody wasn’t gonna get their moment if that happened. But at the same time, I get very angry that romantic comedies run over two hours long, it’s like ‘Guys, that’s not okay.’ More isn’t more. I don’t want anything in the movie that shouldn’t be.”

“There’s a lot of me that got cut out, but I think part of the process in a situation like this is you make the movie, you make your movie, then you remove yourself out of the equation. At some point you stop looking beyond The Avengers movie at your own stuff, you don’t look at that horizon you look at this movie and you go, ‘You know what, The Avengers are more important than I am so these things that I’m obsessed with aren’t necessarily moving the story forward, and therefore they are baggage.’ You can do that in a TV show, you can bring your baggage and sort of lay it out because you have a season to do it, but in a movie you actually have to remove yourself from the equation a bit and when I was finally able to do that, I saw a much clearer road to how to get the best experience for the audience.”

Joss also won't include any nods to his past films or television show in The Avengers. He understands that the Marvel universe has nothing to do with his Whedonverse. But he did include nods to the Marvel universe in the film. He tells Collider, “There are a couple of mentions of things; we were preserving the continuity and I threw in one or two things where I’m like, ‘Well this is something one of them would say because it’s part of the Marvel universe even if it’s not a part of this movie necessarily.’"

Marvel's The Avengers picks up when an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security. And Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. With director Joss Whedon at it's helm, and an ensemble cast including Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Chris Hemsworth (Thor Odinson), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff), Clark Gregg (Agt. Phil Coulson), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), with Tom Hiddleston (Loki), and Stellan Skarsgard (Professor Erik Selvig), the film releases worldwide May 4, 2012!

Awwwwwwwwwww they cut the scenes with Spider-Man
Bane2099 - 3/11/2012, 11:28 PM
2 hr and 15 min isnt that bad. I know when we get the DVD it will include the cut scenes but maybe, just maybe we can get a 3 hour directors cut, that i wouldn't mind at all.
RedandBlue - 3/11/2012, 11:59 PM
Yeah, I'm down for that..
That sounds about what it should be.
patriautism - 3/11/2012, 11:59 PM
Here's hoping for a 3 hour directors cut blu-ray release

@Bane2099 I agree. I was kinda hoping for at least 2 1\2 hours though. But whatever, 2 hours and 15 minutes is pretty good. I hope he DOES release an extended edition.
thalidomide - 3/12/2012, 12:02 AM
I thought it was 2 hours and 25 minutes?

2h15m??? That's it. I thought it was going to be 2h30m....Come on Whedon, sometimes more is better. Revenge of the Fallen is an exception to that, that was just a terrible movie and the run-time made it even worse. But something as good as the Avengers deserves two and half hours.

"he won't make a director's cut"

whatever :/
Tainted87 - 3/12/2012, 12:22 AM
lolz at anyone thinking there wouldn't be a director's cut...

A chance to make more money, sell even more dvds... oh, and "DISNEY" ...need I say more?
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 3/12/2012, 12:33 AM
That's good enough for me. 2 hours and 15 minutes of a marvelous and incredible story, action sequences, and surprises and twists. Heehee, May 4th isn't that far, guys. Get ready. :)

Stay EPIC, my friends!
NeoBaggins - 3/12/2012, 12:36 AM
Two hours and 15 aye? That means:

Medium instead of small Popcorn with light butter and a large drink. Three quarters Sprite, one quarter Rasberry Neste Iced Tea.

There should be a shit load of extras for the DVD then.
l0rdleg0las - 3/12/2012, 12:50 AM
i would love a 3 hour long director's cut. i can't believe 45 minutes cut out of the original cut is no big deal to Whedon. if Disney is smart they release a theatrical version to DVD as soon as they can and then at Christmas time the release the Avengers special edition packed with all the stuff that was cut out of the theatrical cut and a shitload of bonus features.
AvatarIII - 3/12/2012, 1:45 AM
would have preferred IMAX limit length (2h39m) but 2h15m is acceptable.
Seejay - 3/12/2012, 2:14 AM

Well, that is good news. I guess. Over 2 hours.

Hope they release a directors cut, special edition later on.
gannicus - 3/12/2012, 2:20 AM
over 2 hrs pretty cool but the first cut was three hours i sense alot of deleted scenes on the blu ray.
Foxpaw - 3/12/2012, 2:29 AM
they should just release both... the real fans would pay anything to watch the 3 hour show, so having it play at limited theatres wouldn't be a fail. and then the people who love movies more than the avengers can watch their typical 2 hours of entertainment. win - win! which would whedon himself pay to watch, if he were an avengers fan? I like to think the 3 hour one... otherwise he wouldn't have filmed three hours. stupid studios and the average attention span of cinema frequnters.
forthesakeofnow - 3/12/2012, 2:29 AM
You guys realise that this extra 45 minutes is no doubt full of massively incomplete visual effects and probably wont have been scored and mixed 100%. The first proper edit is done before a lot of cgi is done so its cheaper to cut it out before you spend millions on a shot or scene rather than spend the money and then cut it. One of the reasons the only deleted scene in green lantern was completely cgi free.

I wouldnt worry too much about the "lost" "directors cut" stuff as it would have completely jarred with the final look of the film. Its not like its going to be like the lord of the rings extended editions.

if they do end up as deleted scenes expect a lot of green screen, mo cap suits and basic renders of iron man and the hulk.
forthesakeofnow - 3/12/2012, 2:32 AM

the extra stuff wouldnt be ready in time for a release, there is a reason why it gets cut so it saves a lot of money on effects. they could work on it up until the blu ray release though
forthesakeofnow - 3/12/2012, 2:34 AM

and u cant argue about the "average" attention span on cinema frequenters, look at the runtimes of the highest grossing films of all time/modern times, if your movie isnt over 2 hours atleast its not making the big bucks.
laughterman26 - 3/12/2012, 2:37 AM
PEOPLE even though he said that thier wont be a directors cut of this there will be.
here are my reasons-
*they are milking the shit out of this movie
*because of them milking the shit out of this movie they will want to make as much profit as possible-so that will probably mean that it will come out on blue-ray 3d and that will have all the deleted shit on that.

SageMode - 3/12/2012, 2:39 AM
Not 2 hrs 25mins anymore. I'm slightly disappointed. But oh well, bring it
laughterman26 - 3/12/2012, 2:43 AM
@forthsakeofnow and foxpaw-
Thats an obvious statement that i and other people of the cbm community already know. Do you know why it has to be over 2 hrs, its because it gives the movie a chance to develop, and TRANSFORMERS 2 was not that bad you all just think it bad cause michael bay said it was shit himself- on the other hand number three was shit.

Dont argue with the comment about tf3- ever heard the phrase "if you put glitter on shit its still gonna be shit." Thats all it was glorified shit.
laughterman26 - 3/12/2012, 2:47 AM
Oh and @forthesakeofnow green lantern was shit.
would a liked it more if the story was at least decent it would forgive the bad cgi oh and wait "IT WASNT CGI FREE NOW WAS IT"
Ace101 - 3/12/2012, 2:47 AM
im glad its longer than the rest of mcu movies but kinda sad that it aint 2 1/2 hours plus
marvel72 - 3/12/2012, 2:47 AM
3 hours would of been f*ckin great,but i can live with 2 hours & 15 minutes.
peppy - 3/12/2012, 3:17 AM
This is great news as long as its over 2 hours I'm happy as :).
peppy - 3/12/2012, 3:19 AM
But 2 1/2 would have been better .
forthesakeofnow - 3/12/2012, 3:31 AM

you dont seem to have understood any of what I said, i never mentioned transformers and my comment on green lantern had nothing to do with quality and was purely about the fact that what didnt make the final cut but was added was something that didnt require as much post work as the avengers deleted scenes probably would so it would have been cheaper to get to the same look as the rest of the film.
SuperSomething616 - 3/12/2012, 3:33 AM
Special extended edition blu ray please marvel!!!!
forthesakeofnow - 3/12/2012, 3:33 AM

it seems that you thought i had said green lantern didnt have any cgi at all, and thats obviously not what i said
JDUKE25 - 3/12/2012, 3:45 AM
2 hrs and 15 min.? Eh....I guess that's alright. Would've preferred it to be at least 15 minutes longer. Heck I would've taken the 3 hour long cut.
Ace101 - 3/12/2012, 4:03 AM
i would have loved the complete 3hr movie version, maybe here at cbm a petition should be created to make joss whedon make the running time 150min instead of 135min..just a thought. or maybe we could petition for a MCU - Phase 1 blu ray- box set that has a directors cut of all 6 films to be released in the last quarter of this year. worth a shot...What say you?

im just glad its longer than the other mcu movies. XD
Vital - 3/12/2012, 4:03 AM
Do directors actually have control of a "Director's Cut" cause it seems more of a studio thing than anything. Like re-releasing movies in theaters type of thing lol.
HULK2099 - 3/12/2012, 4:04 AM
I wanted a 4 hour movie like the lord of the rings extended versions
JDUKE25 - 3/12/2012, 4:07 AM
45 minutes cut from the movie.....

Ace101 - 3/12/2012, 4:12 AM
@HULK2099 u and me both >.<
Mrcool210 - 3/12/2012, 4:18 AM
@patrickbateman47 Long Runtimes dont make good movies, heck one of the only criticisms of the dark knight was that it was too long. If i made a 3 hour long film that everyone hated it wouldnt make money, runtime has nothing to do with sales
