Joss Whedon Says He's "Torn" About Returning To Direct AVENGERS 2

The director briefly touches on returning to helm the now officially coinfirmed sequel to The Avengers. Will we get a second movie out of Mr Whedon? It's still up in the air, but he has some "cool ideas"..

With the first movie currently making all the money there is on the planet, Marvel have confirmed what we already knew to be inevitable - we will see a sequel to The Avengers. But will we see Joss Whedon back in the director's chair? Kevin Feige has already revealed that there is an option in his contract, but will the man himself want to take advantage of it? While speaking to LA Times' Hero Complex Whedon sounds uncertain, and definitely seems to be in two minds about it..

“You know, I’m very torn. It’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool.”

I'm sure he's just feeling a bit jaded after all the hard work from the first movie and will realize in time that he must return. It's really very simple, he has no choice! Seriously though, to me he sounds worried that a sequel might veer out of his control a little but I really doubt after the massive success of the first movie, Marvel are going to be too heavy handed with Whedon's ideas for the second. Who knows, I think he'll be back but we shall see. I don't suppose I need to ask what you guys want to see happen?

For the rest of the interview - in which Whedon discusses Avengers/Buffy/Astonising X-Men comparisons, as well as revealing who he prefers between that team and the crew of Serenity - click the link below.

If he doesn't (HOPEFULLY not the case) at least he MUST write it!
Jordan757 - 5/15/2012, 6:30 PM
Man he has to come back... He just has to!!!!
Knightrider - 5/15/2012, 6:32 PM
In other words "I really want to do it, but no one expected the huge success of the first one, so now I am holding out for more money to do a sequel"

Clever, very clever.

Not surprised, the directer for Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, all of them have new ones, lol.
Howlett - 5/15/2012, 6:37 PM
Dude has to come back. I want to see Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch on Avengers 2.

He directed the film he always wanted to make. It's really up to him whether or not to come back for another one. Of course, it would be awesome if he did, though now he knows how HUGE the process is.
BANE5000 - 5/15/2012, 6:55 PM
I think its kool how they said Marvel Studios are permitted to use S.W and Quicksilver, so long as they dont mention who their father is or anything relating to the X-men Universe.

Gotta love loop holes in business sometimes :D

... "telling someone else's story."

Yeah, but what a wonderful story it is!

Whedon just can't bail now! Just look at this strong start!

And look at how he proved all the doubters wrong. SO MANY people said he couldn't hack it!

He oughta hang in there and realize just how lucky he is to have the chance to helm this beast! Yeah it's alot of work but he's a Marvel fan! He's living the dream! Literally!
CaptainObvious - 5/15/2012, 7:02 PM
He must come back...he must.

This sounds more to me, like he wants to get a few of the 1000 or so projects he has had on the back burner for years, off the ground.
CyclopsWasRight - 5/15/2012, 7:05 PM
YOU MUST JOSS, PLEASE, I'M BEGGING YOU!! (Actually everyone is)
marvel72 - 5/15/2012, 7:05 PM
fingers crossed he comes back,he did a fantastic job of the first movie & i don't think i could trust it in anyone else's hands right now.

it would have to be some shit hot director.
ManThing - 5/15/2012, 7:07 PM
@ Bane5000: Is that true? About SW and Quicksilver?

Think it would be legal for them to mention that they are mutants?
superotherside - 5/15/2012, 7:07 PM
It would be awesome if he returns. :D
GingerBird - 5/15/2012, 7:08 PM
Don't do it dude!
RocketMadnessBoss - 5/15/2012, 7:08 PM
I'd love if they did a storyline where The Avengers are prisoner on a completely seperate planet and have to escape with their lives, at all costs possible. Something about The Hulk in chains seems cool to me.
CorndogBurglar - 5/15/2012, 7:08 PM
@ knightrider hit it on the head. he's gonna play the "I dont know if I want to come back" game and make his paycheck even higher.
mrHJK - 5/15/2012, 7:08 PM
Please? And while you're waiting...write some other MCU films?
CaptainAmerica31 - 5/15/2012, 7:09 PM
Disney is really good at making directors flee away, I wonder why though?
DocDangerous - 5/15/2012, 7:10 PM
Stop the whine-fest you balding ginger.

Make the sequel and take our money!
CorndogBurglar - 5/15/2012, 7:11 PM
@ juggernaut

Bane is right, Kevin feige said that. Marvel can use SW and quicksilver as long as they dont mention magneto or the x-men (and im assuming mutants in general), and fox can use them as long as they dont mention the avengers.
NosferatuZodd - 5/15/2012, 7:13 PM
He has to realize his original ideas suck. I dont know how Buffy lasted...but it did. other than that everything else was a failure. he needs to stick with what works. Do Avengers 2!
marvel72 - 5/15/2012, 7:14 PM
i loved what joss whedon did,it was like a comic book had come to life.

i believe its only happened half a dozen times as well.

-the avengers
-spider-man 2
-iron man
-sin city
Knightrider - 5/15/2012, 7:14 PM
@CorndogBurglar I don't blame him either, it is Marvels fault for not locking him in for future movies, especially when it seems to be common practice when these franchises start up.
Hawksblueyes - 5/15/2012, 7:14 PM
As a loooonnggtime Avengers fan, I have to say I would be fine with him not returning or even seeing another Avengers film. I waited so long to see something on screen that I never imagined would actually happen, that I am perfectly good with one absolute instant classic film as opposed to a bunch of sequels that could be good or bad.

If he comes back great. If he doesn't, thank you very much for this one Joss.
RocketMadnessBoss - 5/15/2012, 7:15 PM
Hawksblueyes makes an excellent point.
Hawksblueyes - 5/15/2012, 7:15 PM
If he doesn't return, I do hope he at least, does the writing for the future Avengers movies.
GreendaleHumanBeing - 5/15/2012, 7:20 PM
As a Whedon fan, I'm just happy The Avengers didn't get cancelled at the 45-minute mark

Good Lord... He better come back.

joss must get paid by boss
HumanTorch83 - 5/15/2012, 7:26 PM
No, I don't want him back... Keep him as far away from the Avengers franchise as possible. Avengers wasn't cinematic enough.
NOID - 5/15/2012, 7:26 PM
He's gotta come back... but maybe we'll get something like the original star wars... 3 different directors...
