Joss Whedon Talks <i>Avengers</i> at The Melbourne Writers Festival!

Joss Whedon gives us some more information on the script and Marvel concerning 2012's The Avengers at this years Melbourne Writers Festival.

Joss Whedon had some interesting things to say about his career at this years Melbourne Writers Festival. His presentation was given in an interview type format which was conducted by Sue Turnbull.

Below is just the small portion of the interview that covered The Avengers...

So – in terms of coming up to the Avengers though – because – that’s not your script originally is it?

It is now. Yeah. There was a script, but I had a different take on it. And when they showed it to me I said “But this doesn’t work for me, I would do something different.” And they said, “Well tell us what you would do,” and now I’m doing it.

And they’re trust you to do that?

They do! They do, Marvel – they’re very trusting at Marvel. It’s kind of like, in the early days of the WB, when you know, I came back to my agent and said, it was really different, really interesting, they respected what I was talking about, they listened to me and they really let me have my own way – and yeah, they have no idea what I’m doing! Marvel they do actually know, they know exactly what they want to do, but they don’t mind a film maker making his film in the service of what it is they want to do, they’re not trying to press me into something that isn’t me, which is really gratifying.

[mentions again they'll be opening the floor for questions soon and in the process forgets her own question] Along the lines of, this is a great moment – finally you get to join up your comic book love and the possibility of making a film – don’t you think it’d be a great TV Series though.? – never mind! But, you get to make the film, so. Clearly that’s joining the dots in a particular kind of way.

Oh yes. Oh yes. I was reading the Avengers when I was eleven, this is…it’s a big deal for me. I’ve wanted to make a comic book movie, and I was like, “nobody can make a comic book movie”, and then Spiderman came out and I was like “…ok, he can make a comic book movie!”. And you know, there’s been a couple of hits. But most of them I think haven’t – and I also feel that we sort of, we went from the really terrible Hollywood executive’s idea of what a comic book movie should be, to a very short moment when we sort of started getting it right, and then went directly to post-modern. Directly to Watchmen, Kick Ass, Dark Knight, where we’re sort of, we’re taking the comic book movie for granted, now we want to see what’s behind it. I’m like “Whoa-whoa-whoa! Wait a minute!”. First I want to see an awesome movie about superheros that are awesome, that I really care about the whole time, I haven’t seen enough of those. I don’t want to deconstruct it yet! First I want to construct it. So I do feel like there’s still a place for me out there. Even though you know, the genre which I had been desperate to see my whole childhood, and then my adulthood saw it happen while I was busy making TV Shows so I was like, “no I’m not…just wait! Just wait! I’ll be there in a minute!”. And then began to fear, is it over? But ultimately I think it’s very much not.

Tea@ LMFAO, OMG i nearly peed myself. i am so getting in trouble for being on this site during work! i should forward that pic to my boss! LOL
Hawksblueyes - 9/17/2010, 7:10 AM
tea: Having lived on the Fla. Gulf coast on and off for my entire life, I take offense to that. There is way to much of that going on that people are not aware of. There are 3 1/2 people in my family alone (counting cousins) that have been viciously Dolphin raped.
Brashlight - 9/17/2010, 7:15 AM
Hawks@ I am sorry to hear that, there is a dolphin rape support group at the Y on thursdays. Your family should really look into that, they really help with the emotional support :) I am a part of their Boobs anoymous and they have really helped me get in touch with my "emotional" side....fap fap fap...damnit just fell off the wagon :P
Hawksblueyes - 9/17/2010, 7:24 AM
LMAO! In all honesty, did you know that Porpoises (flipper is really a porpoise not a dolphin, dolphins are a fish) fornicate 10 to 20 times a day?
JoshWilding - 9/17/2010, 7:24 AM
I'm so glad Whedon is writing the script now instead of Zak Penn...last thing we need is another Fantastic Four or Elektra! Whedon's work on Astonishing X-Men was awesome and the guy has proved he knows how to handle ensemble casts with his TV work IMO.

And never trust a dolphin! :D

I hated Buffy with a vengeance, couldn't stand it!!! But I'm willing to give this Whedon guy the benefit of the doubt. I'll reserve judgement on the film untill I've actually seen it.

@ Blueeyes - I want to be a porpoise!!!

@ Hawksblueyes: I'm sorry to hear about your family members. I live in Tampa, FL and the overwhelming number of dolphin rapes are reaching epidemic proportions. We need to take action now before it gets worse and more families are torn apart... as well as behinds.
Brashlight - 9/17/2010, 7:48 AM
JoshW@ Dude, thats amazing where the hell did you find those pics!?
Brashlight - 9/17/2010, 7:50 AM
Tea@ OMG, thats so fvcked up its hilarous!!!
JoshWilding - 9/17/2010, 7:56 AM
Brashlight: I googled "punch a dolphin" (no, I'm not sure why I did that exactly either) and there they were, lol! That was all there were of those though and this is all I've got left...

Bman: I hear you. Most people have no idea about the physical and emotional damage these animals can leave on behinds in their wake.

BmanHall - 9/17/2010, 8:02 AM
Dolphins are not the only ones to watch out for.

Hawksblueyes - 9/17/2010, 8:05 AM

LEEE: Thank you bud.

Just for the record... this is a dolphin. It is sold around the world under the names Mahi Mahi and Durado, just to name a few. They sell it under those names because no one wants to eat Flipper. LOL!

Hawksblueyes - 9/17/2010, 8:51 AM
tea: Well, of course you would old boy! =D
AlexDeLarge87 - 9/17/2010, 9:17 AM
Tea&JosW@ I promise guys! I will never trust dolphins again!!:D

niknik - 9/17/2010, 10:38 AM
"I don’t want to deconstruct it yet! First I want to construct it."

Well then you shouldn't be "deconstructing" two of the five original founding members out of the story then should you?

Removing Ant-Man/Giant-Man and the Wasp from the original line-up sure sounds like "deconstruction" to me.
Dynamo - 9/17/2010, 1:47 PM
I think you misunderstood what he was trying to say.
TheDarqueOne - 9/17/2010, 1:48 PM

That was not his decision. The rights to Ant-man are already in play. And that is really not what deconstruction means in this context.

slimybug - 9/18/2010, 12:11 PM
@ RockNROLLCC - Except dolphins atually do punch sharks, and he later acknowledged that in is mistakes video.

Strange, though, to hear that the Zak Penn-written Avengers we've heard about for so long is now no more. I feel bad for him.
tripttwe - 9/19/2010, 3:29 AM
I love how we get a great thread about the SINGLE-HANDEDLY MOST ICONIC characters in one film, with a director who absolutely GETS IT, and I scroll down to see a tattoo of a unicorn banging a dolphin. You gotta love this site...
Orehrepus - 9/20/2010, 3:19 AM

Hilarious, you guys! And to add the gay-ness to the dolphins...

manofmidgard - 9/21/2010, 7:16 PM
i know everyone else is jumping on niknik, but i gotta agree with him. wish they woulda went with the original line up *sigh*. still, i get what whedon is saying too. he coulda used hancock as an example too. everyone's trying so hard to make comic book movies that are different than the ordinary that the "ordinary" cbm is virtually non-existent as yet. and then, just as i start feeling better about whedon making the avengers, the buffy enthusiast up there sounds off and reminds me of why i was scared to begin with, lol. oh yeah, whedon made buffy, crap. well, i just hope whedon doesnt use the retarded looking costume from the cap movie.
