i like him but i hope not they could do better. ah whatever i am alright with this
Hawksblueyes - 4/13/2010, 3:03 PM
He sure isn't one of the men I would have hired to do the job.
P862010 - 4/13/2010, 3:04 PM
interesting choice but would'nt he be better fit for first class?
HelaGood - 4/13/2010, 3:05 PM
i agree... wouldve fit better with First Class..

DogsOfWar - 4/13/2010, 3:08 PM
Obviously he has never worked on anything of this magnitude but he should be a good fit. He might need some help on the action sequences (cue Letterier) but he has a good grasp on drama and storytelling, imo. I have to say I am happy with this if it turns out true.
DaenerysTargaryen - 4/13/2010, 3:10 PM
I'm not suprised.
z3ro - 4/13/2010, 3:13 PM
This is a horrible choice... hes going to make avengers cheesy and campy like johnston is doing for captain america.
RorMachine - 4/13/2010, 3:15 PM
Whedon is a good choice, but I agree that this is much bigger than anything he's done..and he doesn't have much experience. But working with the other guys he could be great for Avengers. One things for sure, it won't just be a series of action set pieces with cgi all over the place and [frick] all story.
80sFace - 4/13/2010, 3:15 PM
Love the choice.

He can handle ensembles, character dev and action - check out the action scenes in Serenity, they're cool as heck.

Before Iron Man, Favs directed Zathura and Elf. Give Whedon a chance. I think he's going to rock.
Triptheorist - 4/13/2010, 3:16 PM
Mmm Nachos
DCMarvelFreshman - 4/13/2010, 3:16 PM
I'm not familiar with his work, so I won't judge, but I really wanted Louis. Ah well. Does anyone know any films hes directed?
superbatspiderman - 4/13/2010, 3:18 PM
I don't think he should do such a big movie but I loved Buffy the vampire slayer and Angel but he shouldn't do the avengers J.J. Abrams or Leterrier are better choices.
80sFace - 4/13/2010, 3:18 PM
MF- If you haven't seen the Firefly TV series, run - don't walk - and get it. Then watch Serenity. It's some of the best TV that ever was. Short, but so sweet.
WolvieCBM - 4/13/2010, 3:19 PM
I think he can pull it off.I assume if Favreau is producing, then he will probably help him out a little.Nice find @MF!
DCMarvelFreshman - 4/13/2010, 3:19 PM
@80sFace will check it out online now. Thanks

Never really seen any of his stuff... but considering I had never heard of Favreau or Letterier until they directed their Marvel flicks, I won't make my decision until I see what he has to offer.
DaenerysTargaryen - 4/13/2010, 3:24 PM
I'm just happy that they are even making an Avengers movie. We should all calm down and wait till the Avengers movie starts filming before we start hating the (possible) director.
RockNRollCC - 4/13/2010, 3:24 PM

this guy can direct First Class.
zemus - 4/13/2010, 3:24 PM
Im sure it will be filled with romance and vampires like the rest of his TV SHOWS!!

California - 4/13/2010, 3:25 PM
Everyone raves about Serenity so hopefully Whedon can pull it off. Marvel will keep his trademark 'cutesiness' on a short leash, hopefully. Favreau is going to executive produce so hopefully his influence will come through as well. So, I guess I'm hoping this movie will turn out okay. I hope Whedon will be scared as hell to screw it up which will elevate his performance on this one. Marvel hasn't screwed up yet!
DCMarvelFreshman - 4/13/2010, 3:25 PM
I'm just happy things are really moving forward with the film.
80sFace - 4/13/2010, 3:28 PM
@MF - check out Firefly from the beginning. It was terrific show. The camera techniques they used for special effects were groundbreaking - then copied in BSG, and now practically used by everyone, including Favs.

But the true fun of Firefly are the characters and storytelling. Whedon can be over the top sometimes, even cheesy, but he's going to have Feige to keep him grounded.

I'm officially excited.
HelaGood - 4/13/2010, 3:28 PM
@MF whedon did a lot of writing and producing, more than he has directing. he did direct some of the best episodes of buffy and angel and firefly. but serenity was really good and he directed that. might be cool to see what he can do when he is given something like this. like 80sface said, favreau didnt do anything spectacular or on the blockbuster level until he was given IM.
CaptainOtter - 4/13/2010, 3:28 PM
I've been behind Marvel alot, but I really hope this isnt true. Whedon has done one movie, and thats Serenity. Although I loved firefly as an entertaining tv show, serenity never soared or had any marks of something resembling greatness. He's solid (you could say) with TV and writing. But directing a big movie? I have doubts, and would like someone more tested.

Whedon strikes me as a guy who could direct the X-Men very well, with a great understanding of those kinds of characters and plots. But something as classical and straight up badass as the Avengers is something he doesn't work with too much.
RorMachine - 4/13/2010, 3:29 PM
So? It tried to emulate a super cool anime..the nerve! Only the basic concept was similar anyway. I think its one of the greatest tv shows ever myself..but horses for courses.

I think its strange that they are thinking of a director for this before Cap and Thor come out, I mean surely they will want to see how those films turn out first?
invalensname - 4/13/2010, 3:31 PM
I never liked Buffy but I just saw all of Firefly and Serenity and I fell in love with it. It showed he can handle a big bunch of colourful characaters.
DaenerysTargaryen - 4/13/2010, 3:32 PM
Let's just wait till Marvel announces whose directing the film.
RorMachine - 4/13/2010, 3:35 PM
He can be a bit hokey, but so what, life is hokey at times! He also gives his characters and stories heart, something that LL seems to have no concept of. Like I said, if this is true he will need a shit load of guidance most likely but I would be more than happy with this choice.
Kirbymaniac - 4/13/2010, 3:38 PM
he is not cheesy, because some people have an different taste, he is goodin character development and action sp what?
ViperXX79 - 4/13/2010, 3:39 PM
Please no.
Bomblu - 4/13/2010, 3:41 PM
Even though it'd cost marvel quite a lot, i think they should put John and Leterrier as 'co-directors' or something on those lines - Fav's very good when it comes to storytelling and paceing, Leterrier is good for the mindless action.

After all, avengers is about a team of heroes. Why not a team of directors? :P

@invalensname - never a fan of Buffy or Angel either, which is why I was shocked by how good Firefly was.

@DannyRand - the fight scene btwn Mal and Chiwetel Ejiofor, the fight scene in the bar when River goes nuts, the space battle scene with the Reavers... goosebumps. I think Whedon can direct.

Despite SirPrize doubling for Ms. Deborah Downer, check it out if you haven't seen it.
fanboiii - 4/13/2010, 3:43 PM
Well, he might be the only guy available, but it's just a rumor as far as I'm concerned.
SHAZAM171 - 4/13/2010, 3:43 PM
LET HIM PROVE HIMSELF. And I agree 110% with Ror. I hope this is true. AFTER READING AND WATCHING THE MOTION COMIC OF THE ASTONISHING X-MEN 1-6, He will be a very exceptional choice. You guys will see.
BillyBlack - 4/13/2010, 3:44 PM
I'd take Whedon over Louis Leterrier any day of the week.

Anyone seen a Louis Leterrier movie? I'd rather have Ed Wood's carcass dug up to direct Avengers than let Louie even get a sniff of the catering table on set. Need some help with a crossword, 14 letters, the clue is "big budget movie failure." L-O-U-I... nevermind, I got it.
astromerc - 4/13/2010, 3:44 PM
This is going to be tinnie boop Crap! Hopefully he won't have anything to do with the script. Not likely ...Well get ready for Crap!
Verdugo - 4/13/2010, 3:44 PM
He doesn’t seem to be the right person to direct something as big as the Avengers, but the again neither did Jon Favre and he did an amazing job, so I hope Marvel can surprise me again.
Hawksblueyes - 4/13/2010, 3:48 PM
I don't like this choice but I think it's going to be hard for any director to screw this up with the other directors producing and helping.
