Joss Whedon Uncertain If He'll Helm THE AVENGERS 2

Joss Whedon Uncertain If He'll Helm THE AVENGERS 2

Despite Marvel Studios moving forward with the inevitable sequel to The Avengers, director Joss Whedon reveals he's still undecided about returning, during his Firefly panel at SDCC. Check it out!

Amid the San Diego Comic-Con panel celebrating his Firefly series' 10-year anniversary, Marvel's The Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon commented on the status surrounding his return to helm the inevitable sequel. Once again remaining uncertain about the anticipated reassembly, Deadline quotes Whedon stating:

“I have not come to a decision on directing Avengers 2 yet. I am having too much fun with this [Firefly reunion] now,” says Whedon.

Despite reportedly aiming Marvel's The Avengers sequel for a 2015 release date, Marvel Studios has Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2 and the yet-to-announced Guardians of the Galaxy movie already dated. Therefore, there's time before Whedon can proclaim his commitment to the sequel. And even despite all that, it's hard to imagine the studio moving forward without him, considering the film's unexpected success was ultimately the result of his writing and directing. Expect more from the filmmaker over the weekend. What do you think?

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”--the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, & directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble on May 4, 2012. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to "Marvel's The Avengers," Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Iron Man 3" on May 3, 2013!; and “Thor 2” on November 15, 2013.

I understand it's a business and all, but he HAS to come back!!! The Avengers is his ticket to do anything he wants and command almost any price. A successful sequel will ensure his grandchildren will never have to work.

Don't do ruin this for me Joss!

I really want him back, but it's understandable. He's a very creative guy and has developed some of the best original sci-fi/fantasy/horror over the course of his career. But, after Buffy and Angel, he has struggled with getting his projects made and keeping them on the air when they do get made.

After Avengers' success, he's now in a position where he has enough clout and power that any studio or network would be eager to support whatever he wanted to do.

The Avengers is a massive undertaking and requires him to focus solely on that film for a solid 2 years. That's desirable for a director for hire, not so much for someone like Whedon. If he signed on, he'd be "stuck' working on someone else's characters for years, while having almost no time for his own original projects.

Maybe he wants to create a new TV. Whedon, as a writer, producer and director, is very hands on. If he developed a show, it wouldn't just be his show in name only, he'd be completely involved creatively. He couldn't do that if he were making Avengers 2. Nor would he have time if he wanted to make an original film.

Anyway, I hope he does return, but I would understand if he didn't.

@Azazel1- I read an interview where he said the complete OPPOSITE of what you said.
myparentsaredead - 7/13/2012, 4:52 PM
I honestly hope it doesn't have anything to do with Marvel themselves. :c
CaptainAmerica31 - 7/13/2012, 4:53 PM
i bet he'll come back, but alot of directors haven't returned to their franchises in marvel studios so dont be surprised if he doesn't.
xfan320 - 7/13/2012, 4:54 PM
He's too big of a fanboy not to come back. If he doesn't direc t tho, than he would probably come back as writer or consultant. I'm thinkin if its lookin desperate in 2014, he'll step into direct again like peter jackson did when the hobbit was stalling last year.

Either way, he is so engrained with nerd culture that there is no where he could escape us!
CaptainAmerica31 - 7/13/2012, 4:57 PM
marvel and sony are the same they keep butting their heads into the directors ass so it gets annyoing and they dont wanna return. marvels worse, patty jenkins left thor 2 cause marvel was being a pain in the ass, just like tolmach and avi arad.
95 - 7/13/2012, 4:57 PM
He laid a solid foundation for future The Avengers sequels. He doesn't have to come back. The only reason I would want to see him back is if they include Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne (starring his Firefly actors: Nathan Fillion and Morena Baccarin). Otherwise, Marvel Studios probably wants a cheaper name (someone they push around) for the sequel.

Joss Whedon As The Story Consultant?
BrotherStarkofMABMindz - 7/13/2012, 4:58 PM
Don't joke about that Joss, come back
whoa123 - 7/13/2012, 4:58 PM
Dear God Joss come back!
YOUNGBL00D - 7/13/2012, 5:02 PM
WHY IN THE HELL, WOULD YOU START SUCH A HUGE FRANCHISE, SAY THAT IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN YOUR DREAM, TELL EVERYONE, THAT YOU HAVE GREAT HOPES FOR THE FUTURE OF THE MCU, AND SUCCEED IN DOING SO, and then just decode you don't want to do it any more. You're obviously not that big of a fan if you're just going to quit after this one. [frick] you
Ryguy88 - 7/13/2012, 5:03 PM
I hope he comes back but Marvel has had trouble, planned or not with keeping directors.

I also heard that Mads Mikkelsson wont be doing Thor 2 any more, terrible news!
DocDangerous - 7/13/2012, 5:04 PM
Good riddance you balding ginger. Fellow CBM'ers sign my petition to get a true director for Avengers 2. Michael Bay.

I'm totally lying. Put the torches and pitch forks down.
thewonderer - 7/13/2012, 5:10 PM
In complete honesty, does everyone really think Joss Whedon is the only one capable of making Avenger movies?
ComixBookGuy - 7/13/2012, 5:11 PM
The Avengers 2 will have new members like Ant-Man, Black Panther and possibly the Guardians of the Galaxy fighting against Thanos and the Masters of Evil!
FilmsFan - 7/13/2012, 5:13 PM

No but really MARVEL is such a asshole for Directors, Jon Favreau made them IRON-MAN & the they screwed IRON-MAN-2 (as I said before; NOT for me cuz I liked it a lot) by rushing it! & now throwed him out of IronMan-3!

So I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't bring Whedon back, BUT that'll be their BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER!
This guy made AVENGERS possible! He made this Film!
Imagine if this film would've failed; MARVEL is doomed!! But as its a Blockbuster; MARVEL is Booming!
But I'm more than anything sure that they'll bring him back for Avengers-2!
Not at all for Avengers 3 then!
Cuz even if Avengers-2 made 5 Billion$; they wouldn't want to give Whedon as much creative power as WB has given (or Forced to give to) NOLAN!
Marvel would want to keep control in their OWN company hands!
They can't afford a Visionary like Favreau & Whedon (for long!!)

& BTW did anyone know that Robert Downey JR earned over 50 Million$ from Avengers!
Whendon didn't even get 5!
Let alone 5, I heard it was 1 million!!

So maybe he really Pissed! & ANGRY!
Cuz he deserved MOST & almost all credit to make Avengers!
Marvel credit is to make previous film & again they were in good hands of Favreau & Keneth Branah their! & Whedon here!

So i don't know how long MARVEL keep picking up visionary directors & dumping them!!
TheBeard - 7/13/2012, 5:14 PM
He'll be back as writer/director.
Polygame - 7/13/2012, 5:14 PM
