Kevin Feige Comments On the "Ensemble" Aspect Of The Avengers Storyline!

Make the jump for a few quotes from Marvel Studios' head honcho and producer of The Avengers, Kevin Feige, where he dots on how true of an "ensemble" film it is and more!

Transcribed from the latest issue of Empire magazine, courtesy of SuperSAINT, the head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, briefly discussed next summer's highly-anticipated film, The Avengers. Commenting on the Joss Whedon-written storyline and potential "leaders" of the film, if any, check out the interesting tidbits below.

"What people seem to have taken away so far is not just the new characters or costumes, which are cool. but the character interaction"

"It's a storyline that allows each of the characters to bring something to it - they all bring something to the party from their knowledge base"

"As any fan of the Marvel team up knows, what happens when Marvel heoes team up? - They fight each other, then they fight together. We did not shy away from that direction"

"The best Avengers comics are when no-one is the leader. Joss has done a great job of making this a true ensemble picture - Loki and Fury are, if anything, true drivers of the story at points. And Jeremy Renner could steal the movie from everybody with his bow and arrow. We don't have to make this Iron Man and his amazing friends - Iron Man's a giant, giant part of the movie and when he comes in, people take notice, but this is an Avengers movie"

Marvel's The Avengers is the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner with Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Hiddleston, directed by Joss Whedon, Marvel's The Avengers will be released May 4, 2012.

Yea I can See Hawkeye being a lot of fans favorite for the film.
MrLoki - 10/24/2011, 1:50 PM
Sounds great!
can't wait!
MattMercdoc - 10/24/2011, 2:02 PM
Renner is also the man, which is why he might steal the show
vtopa - 10/24/2011, 2:04 PM
I like what I am hearing. Nobody wants this to be Iron Man III.
RainbowRaider - 10/24/2011, 2:07 PM
The best Avengers comics are when no one is the leader? Who said that? Can someone remind Kevin Feige that the *GREATEST LEADER IN ALL OF COMICS* happens to be in this movie? If Cap doesn't end up being the leader it will be an enormous cop-out of epic proportions, likely because they're caving in to Iron Man's popularity yet again like on the cartoon show. Shame on you, Marvel.
shadow314 - 10/24/2011, 2:08 PM
If by "fight" they mean fight each other physically and not just throwing mental barbs at each other, then I hope Thor's power is shown true to scale. Other than the Hulk he would straight up slaughter the others (IM, Cap, BW, Hawk) in a physical fight.

Thor better not be overshadowed like he was in the trailer.
RorMachine - 10/24/2011, 2:09 PM
Yes, and Marvel were sure to put all of that across in the trailer.

Oh wait..
TheMadman - 10/24/2011, 2:20 PM
@shadow314: if anyone was overshadowed it was the Hulk. Banner was in for about 7 seconds and the Hulk got 2 1/2 seconds - SO QUIT COMPLAINING.
headlopper - 10/24/2011, 2:22 PM
There's a man who cares.
write33 - 10/24/2011, 2:29 PM
saying all the right things. any smart fan knows that the Marketing campaign for Avengers just started, and it's a marathon not a sprint.

I look forward to how they balance movie continuity with the roles & responsibilities we know and love from the comics
OptimusBurgundyMaximus - 10/24/2011, 2:29 PM
Marvel you made it very clear in the trailer ....

This is Iron man 3

with added Thunderessness
BmanHall - 10/24/2011, 2:36 PM
Sounds exactly what the X-Men series SHOULD have been like. None of this "Wolverine and everyone else" BS we have now.
blvdnoise - 10/24/2011, 2:38 PM
Can't wait..
BmanHall - 10/24/2011, 2:46 PM
@ MrHulkSmashin: God willing, 7 seconds is all Bruce Banner gets. If the Hulk is on screen, cool. The less I have to endure Mark Suckalo, the better.
marvel72 - 10/24/2011, 2:49 PM
fan favorite avengers for me are......

1st hulk
2nd iron man
3rd thor
4th captain america
5th black widow
6th hawkeye

can't wait to see the hulk f*ck shit up & fingers crossed fight thor & iron man.

DarthTesla - 10/24/2011, 2:52 PM
That is an awesome way of summing up the movie. Sounds great.

Exactly what an Avengers movie needs to be.

SageMode - 10/24/2011, 2:57 PM
""The best Avengers comics are when no-one is the leader."

What the hell is Feige smokin'? Captain America being the leader of the Avengers is probably the coolest thing about the Avengers comics in the first place. If they dont make him just that, then im gonna be disappointed.
DCMarvelFreshman - 10/24/2011, 2:58 PM
SMH. People are acting like the trailer showcases everything about the movie, even though that's what a trailer should do. Clearly the trailer just included seconds of most of Iron Man's scenes, and we all know why.

While I agree that more of the team should be included, saying The Avengers is Iron Man 3 is going too far. I can't wait for this movie to shut down people who go in thinking that.
Kaziganthi - 10/24/2011, 2:59 PM
@LordBaphomet - that trailer was a lot of Iron Man, yes I agree, but to say the whole movie is going to be the same is just guessing. They know RDJ (and Iron Man) is a big box office draw so they capitalize on that in the trailer. I hope what Mr. Feige says about it being a team movie where everyone has something to contribute is accurate.
Dakjaniels - 10/24/2011, 3:27 PM
Sounds right on point. I can see Cap working as a field commander, taking charge in the heat of battle but Fury is more the character to run the show. I can see a large part of of Cap's arc being dedicated to coming to terms with the new world he's in.

Besides, he needs to earn the respect of the team. No way would Thor follow cap unless he's earned it.

FanboyTrump - 10/24/2011, 3:29 PM
Iron Man is my favorite super hero so its all good :D
THORION76 - 10/24/2011, 3:36 PM
I may be about to reveal a spoiler but im not sure. Let me think about it for a minute.
THORION76 - 10/24/2011, 3:37 PM
THORION76 - 10/24/2011, 3:42 PM
Ok here it is i was at Wal Mart the other day and i saw one of the new Avenger's Assemble 6 inch Iron Man figure's and it was the HULK BUSTER armor. I don't know if there going to have it in the movie but they have made a toy of it.
Hardfelt - 10/24/2011, 3:45 PM
I like the idea that it could be an Iron Man 3 film. But hey - it could also be Capt America v 1.1 or Thor/Hulk 2.0. Why? Because they are deflty weaving elements from each of their individual worlds into a larger universe. This is where the drama resides (it is a film remember and drama is what propels it!) As is the case in the comic world, certain personalities hog the limelight as a result of their nature. It would be absurd to alot equal screen time in some sort of democratic take as it would diminish the tension. Hawkeye, Cap and Black Widow are one end of the spectrum, Hulk and Thor the other, with Iron Man being an intermediary between humanity (technology) and the gods (magic) hanging somewhere between the two. Besides, the Iron Man franchise has been the big winner here and to rlegate Downey Jr to a bit part would be not only economically imprudent, but artistically daft. He's a star and needs to shine. The reality is - at this early stage, they have pieced together the best of the dailies from the cutting room floor and given us a quick glimpse.
RaMan - 10/24/2011, 3:50 PM
Hawkeye may steal the show but Hulk will be the hero of Avengers.

Loki: "I have an Army"

Stark: "We have a Hulk"
jaysin420 - 10/24/2011, 3:58 PM
I really hope he's kidding about Renner.

I mean he's a great actor and all, but if bow and arrow guy steals the movie from IM, Thor, Cap, Hulk, Fury, Loki, etc....then something went VERY wrong.
EdParker - 10/24/2011, 4:01 PM
@ Hulk2008 dyin to see hulk in action
EdParker - 10/24/2011, 4:02 PM
Ranger14 - 10/24/2011, 4:05 PM
Lol....just because the trailer shows more of Ironman doesn't mean the movie will. It's the first trailer. Talk about premature judgement. It's called marketing folks and if you look at the success of Ironman you are going to beef up the trailer with IM footage. If you don't get that, then I don't know what to tell you. Even if there is a little more of IM in the film, it wouldn't be the end of the world. I don't think they will have it too out of balance.
toekneemango - 10/24/2011, 4:06 PM
The way I've always seen it, Captain America works best as the leader of the Avengers, but Stark should always be #2 and in competition to lead - similar to how you could view the Kirk/Spock connection as well as Jason/Tommy from Power Rangers and Yoda/Mace from Star Wars. I assumed that this film would consist primarily of Cap vs Stark, Hulk vs Thor (with of course everyone interacting a little bit with everyone else), Fury being the overseer that tells them all to shut up and get to work, and then Hill/Coulsen/Hawkeye/Widow are basically just underlings that don't matter all that much (and could easily just work together, all 4 of them, in a SHIELD film).
manofmidgard - 10/24/2011, 4:15 PM
hee hee, soundin good. guessing that iron man will try to take over as leader after fury sends them out on a mission and ends in disaster. avengers coming to blows w each other. hulk going on a rampage and the others just trying to contain him. eventually they figure out cap is the man to lead em and when they do this then they kick some @ss.
rmf1979 - 10/24/2011, 4:20 PM
You should all move to Hollywood and become writers and directors since everyone here knows the best way to do everything
therj00 - 10/24/2011, 4:27 PM
Cap's gonna be sttruggling with the adjustment to the time period, so an ensemble-no leader is a great way to go, in Avengers 2 though Cap should be leader
marvel72 - 10/24/2011, 5:22 PM
@ illwill

batman begins 12
the dark knight 12
the dark knight rises probably 12

your point being......
Joeline - 10/24/2011, 5:30 PM
@ Illwill ...well then, you must NOT know it then since your obviously of the mental age of 3....

@ rmf1979 = lol I agree :)

For everyone wingin over Iron Man.... Hello? he was working as consultant, and totally independent of shield before the Avengers join up. He's got the finance, technology and 'connections' to let him operate seperate to Shield, which is why at the start of the movie he will likely be fairly often seen. The rest of the Avengers have to 'assemble'. Iron man just needs to grow up and learn to work with the team :p
sexymuppet - 10/24/2011, 5:31 PM

you got a trailer where 3/4ths of it was old footage, suck a dick
NightForce - 10/24/2011, 6:14 PM
That's one of the main things I wanted them to get right was the character interaction (and by the look of it, they will). People are [frick]ing stupid, its the first trailer its not gonna show the whole movie. And of course Iron Man will be in a lot of the trailer its called MARKETING, Iron Man is popular.
marvel72 - 10/24/2011, 6:46 PM
@ illwill

you've reported be for previous comment about batman begins & the dark knight just being 12's.

i think someone is a little butt hurt. :D
