Mark Ruffalo On Playing THE HULK; Discusses His One Line In THE AVENGERS

The actor speaks about performing the actions of the Green Goliath in his mo-cap suit, drawing inspiration from the old Bill Bixby tv series, and that one spoken line of dialogue which fans may have missed due to laughing so much!..

Mark Ruffalo's portrayal of Bruce Banner and his cgi alter ego in The Avengers is emerging as the talking point of the movie. Many fans feel his take on the character steals the show. Marvel are well aware of this and seem set to embark on more solo movie outings, hopefully with Ruffalo reprising the role. USA Today have posted a video interview with the actor, in which he discusses the various aspects of playing The Hulk. He says the moment when it really hit him how to approach the performance happened while watching the '60s tv series with his son. He also describes the experiences of performing the actions for The Hulk while wearing a tight-fitting leotard. And, speaks about The Hulk's one line in the movie - "Puny God" - which many people seemed to miss because the scene that precedes it (Hulk "smashing Loki repeatedly) resulted in so much laughter..

Marvel's The Avengers is out now, if you haven't seen it yet do so immediately.

Best live action interpretation of Bruce Banner/Hulk yet!
Kalel219 - 5/8/2012, 7:02 AM
I know I just barely caught the line the first time I saw the movie :) but it was worth it to see causal movie goers enjoying the film
Bearjew - 5/8/2012, 7:09 AM
wait what did he sa?
R888 - 5/8/2012, 7:10 AM

ManofSteel23 - 5/8/2012, 7:12 AM

MrReese - 5/8/2012, 7:15 AM
Capt.America - Stark we got em!

Cap - just like u said
IM - Then tell em 2 suit up! I'm bringing the party 2 u
Blk Widow - I don't c how that's a party
Capt. America - Dr.Banner now would be a good time 4 u 2 get angry
Dr.Banner - Well that's my secret Capt. I'm always angry (Hulks out)

That was EPIC!!! fav. scene of the movie!!!
BrotherStarkofMABMindz - 5/8/2012, 7:17 AM
Hulk solo film with the villain as The Leader, that was an awesome easter egg in The Incredible Hulk.

Hulk stole the show and he definitely smashed
thalidomide - 5/8/2012, 7:20 AM

That scene never fails to amuse people, I saw the movie 3 times and people still cheered to that scene.
MrReese - 5/8/2012, 7:20 AM
Was that Mark's voice when he said "Puny God" or Lou's??

SuperSomething616 - 5/8/2012, 7:21 AM
And all you haters out there wined about norton not being recast!!!

all i gotta say is:

Simonsonrules - 5/8/2012, 7:22 AM
Where are all of the Ruffalo haters? Those who thought he was "too tan" when they cast him? Very good casting.

I assumed that when Banner was told that Shield had been shadowing him the whole time and kept other interests off his back, that they meant The Leader.

The Hulk / Thor fight was one of the highlights of the movie for me. Just wish it was longer, which is exactly how the moviemakers hope you'll feel.

MrReese - 5/8/2012, 7:22 AM
@thalidomide That scene comepletly sold me on Mark as Banner. That scene was incredible!!! I completely lost it!!! lol
thunderforce - 5/8/2012, 7:25 AM
I think it was Ruffalo's voice and it didn't sound deep enough for me , the Hulk needs to have a deep voice and use it more too .
StrangerX - 5/8/2012, 7:29 AM
@ror- spot on about many missing that line. I even missed it the first time, because I was laughing my ass off.
thalidomide - 5/8/2012, 7:30 AM
I also remember someone saying that Ruffalo is not too thin to be Bruce Banner.
MrReese - 5/8/2012, 7:32 AM
I personally liked Norton's interpretation of Banner =) I just hate the fact that they keep switching actors 4 the Hulk.N IF RDJ gets replaced I think that'll throw off the audience. I mean RDJ is IM much like Hemsworth is THOR!! In the end who the [frick] can pick up where RDJ left off!!?? That's like asking who's can pick up where Heath left off as the next Joker?? The bar is set high!!!
MatchesMalone - 5/8/2012, 7:40 AM
@Simonsonrules- I kind of figured he meant General "Thunderbolt" Ross and the Hulkbusters.
thalidomide - 5/8/2012, 7:43 AM
uhm NO
MrReese - 5/8/2012, 7:44 AM
Another ? on my mind how the [frick] was IM able 2 communicate with the other Avengers?? They didn't have an ear piece with exception with Capt. America I would presume. With the helmet hidden an ear piece right?? just nitpicking lol XD
FoxForce5 - 5/8/2012, 7:47 AM
Hulk is becoming the Silent Bob of the MCU - he doesn't speak much but when he does, you'll want to hear what he's got to say!

I for one hated Mark Ruffalo until RDJ demanded us to shut the hell up during the ComicCon announcement as he endorsed his casting.
Sparrowsabre7 - 5/8/2012, 8:08 AM
So what was Ferrigno doing if not the voice of Hulk? Does he just provide the growls and roars?
MarkV - 5/8/2012, 8:12 AM
Remember when the lying steroid addict Lou Ferigno claimed that his voice was the Hulk's? Yeah, the same Lou Ferigno that sued his own brother and charges little kids $20 dollars to take his picture. Maybe next time people will take what he says with a grain of salt.
MarkV - 5/8/2012, 8:13 AM
You know how to tell if Lou Ferrigno is lying? Just wait till he opens his mouth. Steroid addicts are always lying about if or how much steroids they use, so it's second nature to lie and lie and lie.
kunyahk - 5/8/2012, 8:16 AM
"I'm always angry"
I want that screenshot put onto my tombstone
StormLoganSummers - 5/8/2012, 8:20 AM
I missed the line too because people were laughing like hyenas. I'll go back and see it in a few weeks when the hype dies down.
Fogs - 5/8/2012, 8:21 AM
I thought the one line was "that's my secret, Cap... I'm always angry!"

That was the best one IMO.
Greengo - 5/8/2012, 8:24 AM
Yeah I didn't hear it until the 2nd time I watched the movie cause Hulk smashing Loki caused quite the uproar.

I really wasn't impressed with Ruffalo. Just kind of a bland performance, imo.

I think Ed Norton and Eric Bana where better.
TheRationalOne - 5/8/2012, 8:27 AM
I hope Feige changes his mind about a new Hulk movie. Last he spoke on the topic he said it probably wouldn't happen
Fogs - 5/8/2012, 8:42 AM
@Greengo - no way bana was better. If Ruffalo was bland as you say, Bana looked retarded.

I gotta admit I was on the Norton wagon before the Avengers but now I wish Ruffalo was in TIH instead.

"papa...he is so misunderstood"...from the mouths of babes..And THIS is why marvel has been successful. Just like in Cap the "I don't like bullys" or "I'm just a kid from Brooklyn". Marvel, and the actors it has chosen, understand their characters, what makes them tick, and most importantly...WHY WE CARE ABOUT THEM!!!!
EarOne - 5/8/2012, 8:49 AM
Best Hulk moments:
- Hulk punches Thor after they smash the aliens side-by-side
- Hulk tosses Loki around like a ragdoll
- Banner changes for the first time. the way they create that scene and able to make it fresh and scary again..especially by ScarJo's superb acting. incredible
- Hulk catches mjolnir and fails to pick it up from the floor, afterwards
- Hulk wakes Tony up at the end of the battle

Best IM's moments:
- getting the suit energized to 400% by thor's lightning and just runs with it
- his banter with cap
- his recognizing banner as his MALE soulmate
- the way he reacts to the files on cap, hulk and tesseract
- when he saves the day by 'guiding' the bomb to the 'other side'
- his banter with Loki
- his arrival at stutgart, germany
- his reaction to hulk waking him up at the end

Best Cap moments:
- when he's pissed while punching the bag. evans's a pretty underrated actor
- his banter with Tony
- his telling Hulk to 'SMASH'
- how he 'proves' himself to the two cops when they question his orders
- his sprint into danger, while widow and hawkeye covering him from behind with the aliens' laser shooting at him from all directions
- telling the other avengers the game plan
- eagerly telling how he knows the wizard of oz reference

Best thor moments:
- how he enters the plane and steals his bro from tony and cap
- when he buds Tony's head, in the forest
- when he summons thunder bolts from atop the chrysler bldg
- his heart-to-heart conversation with loki before the forest fight
- when he hits the hulk with mjolnir in slo-mo
- whenever he stretches his arm to summon his bigass hammer

Best BWidow moments:
- anything she's in...she's THAT hot

Best Hawkeye moments:
- shooting and hitting the aliens without looking at em
- the jumping off the building towards the end while shooting his last arrow
- aiming at loki with the whole team standing behind him, at the end

Best Fury moments:
- telling the council they're plan as a "STOOPID ASS plan". only sam's fury can deliver that line and make it work
- shooting a bazooka at the military plane
- "pushing" the team by using coulson's bloody cards
- anytime he's talking to loki
m0th3r - 5/8/2012, 8:50 AM
@Greego Ruffalo is a mix of not just Bana and Norton, but i clearly see Bill Bixby. His body type, his look, and even his dress...Here is the deal, Yeah Norton is an AWESOME actor, and i really liked him as hulk. He is a little smaller in frame too, which is a bit more Banner like...BUT, Ruffalo is signed for six pictures, Norton would NEVER do that. He is an excellent actor, so im happy...but marvel also seems to be trying to avoid a rotating cast of people portraying their characters. People hate that...remember 80/90s Batman...Got very old. Also a cost thing. Just wait, RDJ is going to do IM3, and then look at Marvel and say "I really wanna me XXX million dollars for 3-6 films" thinking 150 mil. Avengers will hit 1B real soon, and when the smoke clears probably go to 1.5-1.7...maybe 2. This is Disneys new Pixar...
Jolt17 - 5/8/2012, 8:51 AM
The "Puny god," line indeed was covered with so much laughter the preceeding scene has made, but when I saw it, people seemed not to miss that line and laughed even louder upon hearing it. The best moment of him for me is still when he defeats the first Leviathan in one blow, though.
thalidomide - 5/8/2012, 8:52 AM
I confirm m0th3r's comment
Amazo - 5/8/2012, 8:56 AM
Unless I'm a decade older than even my mother realises the Bill Bixby show was late 70's...Minor nit-pick.
The 'Puny God' line was great! :)
