Marvel Studios Moving Forward With Short Films? Agent Coulson To Star In First Two?

The rumor of Marvel Studios getting into the business of releasing short films for lesser known characters, a la Pixar, has resurfaced now seeming more plausible! Check it out!

Over a year ago, a huge rumor surfaced suggesting that Marvel Studios was "meeting with writers and directors to work on small scale films based on some of their unknown characters." While the studios' president debunked the rumor, he did however reveal his interest in the idea. And now the rumor has resurfaced, via Film School Rejects, not only suggesting the studio has made it more than just an "idea," but they've already filmed two. Read the source's report below verbatim.

Marvel Studios may be getting into the short film business to help boost their already bustling feature film trade. According to a source close to Marvel Studios, the company is setting some of their staff writers to developing smaller characters in the Marvel universe for future projects. These projects, only proposed as short films at this point, could lead to certain ancillary characters making appearances in future features or even becoming popular enough to headline their own film. hat is certain, though, is that two shorts have already been shot, both featuring actor Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson. These are to be included as special features on the Thor & Captain America DVDs & Blu-Rays that will release later in the year.

Now what may make this plausible; details for THOR's Blu-ray release were revealed today, with two mysterious features titled Marvel Studios - The Avengers (Bonus Featurette) and Marvel One-Shot: The Consultant: . Anyhow, the site further states that how well these short films are received, depends on the studios' decision to move forward with other characters.

Anyhow, if true, THOR hit shelves on DVD/ Blu-ray on September 19th. Also, could the mysterious Isaiah Mustafa-starrer Luke Cage teaser, which it's creators ordered to be removed, be another one of these shorts? What do you think?

@DCMarvelFreshman You editors don't sleep much, do you? I was almost done with the finishing touches of my article, only to have it deleted by you. Don't mean to whine, but I'm starting to feel discouraged. You guys need to give the underdogs a chance to break a big story every once in a while...

Totally cool idea! Perhaps this could be a way to introduce budding filmmakers as well.
I'd definitely put something good together if that were the case!
warlock - 6/29/2011, 11:04 PM

This is a brilliant. No wonder Marvel is called "The House of Ideas".
MaddMonkk - 6/29/2011, 11:27 PM

NextHero08 - 6/29/2011, 11:53 PM
Why does that sound familiar. Isn't DC doing something like that? But I guess since they make sound like it's going to be live action, could turn out bad ass. Punisher and She-Hulk......please She-Hulk.
PoPcornDude - 6/30/2011, 12:22 AM
Spider-Woman please !!!
Scarlet Witch
Cloak & Dagger
and maybe Namor
=)
luckylu - 6/30/2011, 12:29 AM

spideyboy - 6/30/2011, 12:30 AM

On a different note, can you guys format this fūcking website for mobile devices already? Shit.
Ceejay - 6/30/2011, 1:13 AM
This is a stroke of genius, shame DC lack vision!
SuspenseSmith - 6/30/2011, 1:32 AM
DC is so far behind on this point, and after 2012... Nolan's through with Batman. The world may not end in 2012 but the hope for DC's future may end by then.

Marvel's just got a better focus and vision.
SuspenseSmith - 6/30/2011, 1:38 AM
DC better turn a corner and do something extremely impressive. Hopefully Man of Steel will put them in the right direction. They can't keep flopping like with Wonder Woman or Green Lantern. They can do better than Marvel if they just learned how to find a better tone for their films and shows. Their larger-than-life god-like superheroes need to be grounded somehow.

That's what I felt was wrong with Green Lantern. It's too cosmic and elemental for the audience to relate. Thor's the only Marvel character that had a similar issue but handled it pretty well by focusing on family dynamics rather than cosmic events.
Tin - 6/30/2011, 2:17 AM
Yes! I want to write and direct one
redlion - 6/30/2011, 2:27 AM
@weneed sounds like a good idea but I would like to see a Marvel sub-universe featuring all it's dark or supernatural characters, sort of like a shadow universe.
Orphix - 6/30/2011, 2:27 AM
I wonder what format these will take?

Short films can be anything from 5 minutes to 20 minutes long. I can't see them effecting feature film deals with actors if they are this short. Hopefully they are just seperate deals.

I see these as almost SHIELD-centric looking at them working on stuff. Almost like behind the scenes type footage of them finding Thors hammer and how they went about finding a frozen steve rogers.
simonwilliamsfan - 6/30/2011, 3:50 AM
Would like to see Simon Williams or Williams technologies referenced in a short film so in an Avengers sequel Wonderman can be introduced...not only because he is my favorite but also because he would set up a Vision and Ultron story line which would be amazing....have Ultron being made in an Ant Man movie to tie into an Avengers movie down the road....ah dreams
thunderforce - 6/30/2011, 3:51 AM
Awesome .
GUNSMITH - 6/30/2011, 3:57 AM
COULSON...THE WINDOW MAN FOR MARVEL

"SON OF COLE"
marvel72 - 6/30/2011, 4:04 AM
this a great idea doing origins this way.
GUNSMITH - 6/30/2011, 4:11 AM
I WOULD LIKE TO PETITION AGENT COULSON TO BE WRITTEN IN MARVEL MAINSTREAM COMIC BOOKS.
manthingnitsuj - 6/30/2011, 4:12 AM
fantastic.
GUNSMITH - 6/30/2011, 4:46 AM
IF YOU INTERWOVE COULSON INTO THE MAINSTREAM, SINCE HIS AFFILIATION WITH STARK MAYBE HE COULD BE:

GUARDSMEN

SHIELD, SUPERPOWERED ENEMIES, JUST AN IDEA...LIKE THEY INTERWOVE RICK WITH HULK OR CAPTAIN MARVEL.
PirateOpossum - 6/30/2011, 4:48 AM
Ant-Man and Wasp?
marvel72 - 6/30/2011, 5:04 AM
@ theflash

ant-man & wasp on the avengers disc would be great.

-nova
-inhumans
-captain mar-vell
-guardians of the galaxy
-iron fist
-luke cage
-dr.strange
EastcoastAvenger - 6/30/2011, 5:29 AM
From the first time I heard of this I thought it was a brilliant idea! bring them on Marvel!
SiegeofVader - 6/30/2011, 5:51 AM
Hm. This is an interesting idea. Definitely a way to give the spotlight to other characters. I'd like to see a Warriors Three short film, or something introducing Balder. (I've been on a Thor kick the last few months). The Punisher, maybe?
StrangerX - 6/30/2011, 5:57 AM
Nick Fury-Coulson you are one bad MuthaF*
Coulson-Shut your mouth!!
Urban8er - 6/30/2011, 5:59 AM
Dr. Strange and Black Panther!!!!!!!!!!
JackBauer - 6/30/2011, 5:59 AM
SWEET!
BIGBMH - 6/30/2011, 6:09 AM
It's a cool idea. I imagine they'd be similar in scale to this prequel to Fast and Furious.

MJPETTY7 - 6/30/2011, 6:15 AM
It would be a great way to tie-in the Avengers universe to the X-Men, Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, and Blade films. Make them all in the same universe.
JHowlett - 6/30/2011, 6:16 AM
Please get Spider-Woman on screen little short flims like what they're planning is the only way that can happen. Black Panther needs to be included, Luke Cage but you know I'd really like to see more Marvel Knights movies Punisher Warzone had the right idea, Ghost Rider should be a Marvel Knights movie Luke Cage, but really I'd like to see Blade make a comeback under the Marvel Knights label hopefully we also get to see Frank Castle make a return to the screen along with DareDevil. The big budget PG movies Ironman, Hulk, Thor have been great but I'd like to see them step their game up with the Marvel Knights label.
SCOURGE - 6/30/2011, 6:26 AM
Spider-Woman, She-Hulk, Hellcat, Night Nurse
mstargel - 6/30/2011, 6:56 AM
My only thought is why keep them for the DVDs? This seems like the perfect marketing scheme to get people to the theater... Since Marvel and Disney are interwoven, use these to get people in to see Disney movies, do them as a 30 minute TV show, or as a preview/warmup to a Marvel feature film... I just think that people will buy the DVD for the movie, but if you use these as marketing tools and then once you have 2, 3, or 4 make them a DVD unto themselves, you get a far better return on your investment...

Still an awesome idea and I would love to see some of the less mainstream characters be brought into the mainstream.
nuck82 - 6/30/2011, 7:00 AM
not sure about this, i hope major actors will be into this kind of thing, i dont want a bunch of b or c rated actors pulling of marvel heros just because the pay day isnt big enough for the bigger names

dont get me wrong i love the idea and cant wait to see what it is, but will it take marvel movies back the the 70s and 80s?
ROBBEATZZZ - 6/30/2011, 7:03 AM
SEE MARVEL STUDIO'S STRATEGY IS ON POINT!...THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO PROMOTE LESS KNOWN CHARACTERS TO THE BIG SCREEN
superotherside - 6/30/2011, 7:08 AM
that would be pretty awesome... maybe a warriors three spin off, or a cap WW2 spin off with baron zemo? maybe make the shield film just a short? war-machine short? the possibilities are endless...
SpideyQuad - 6/30/2011, 7:09 AM
@SillySteve

Bitch'in

@Nomis

I could go for some of that!
TheDukeofMadmen - 6/30/2011, 7:17 AM
Ohhhh....we could only hope. I love the short films that DC comics did with thier animated films. Short superhero films on the DVD's of main films would be awesome.

It's an idea that I can drink too.
EditNinja - 6/30/2011, 7:22 AM
This is just another awesome MCU idea.
Can't wait for this.
JatevinM - 6/30/2011, 7:31 AM
I like this idea because it opens up the possibility of allowing the audience to get to know certain characters and gauge the audience response to them before giving them their own movie. I totally like this idea I say start with Coulson, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and then do Ms. Marvel, and Luke Cage.
Ryguy88 - 6/30/2011, 7:45 AM
That's pretty cool news although why would they make a film, at any length, about a character who was just created to bring these movies together? But maybe Gregg isn't starring in them, who knows.
