POLL: Which 5 Films Should Be Nominated For The VFX Oscar?

POLL: Which 5 Films Should Be Nominated For The VFX Oscar?

The potential candidates for the Academy Award's Best Visual Effects honor has been narrowed down to 10 films. But there can only be 5 films on the official nomination ballot. Marvel's The Avengers is probably a lock but what other 4 films should also receive a nomination?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced that 10 films are currently in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 85th Academy Awards. But only 5 out of those 10 will receive an official nomination. Which five films do you think will receive the honor?

Some notable snubs are Men In Black 3, Hunger Games, Ted, Chronicle & The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 2.

The hunger games had some bad vfx, the deer in the beginning looked like the same one from the walking dead season two. Teeerrrrible
DylansMyDog - 12/1/2012, 8:55 AM
The Life of Pi had some beautiful vfx I hope it wins
Minato - 12/1/2012, 8:55 AM
Avengers leading so far
GuardianAngel - 12/1/2012, 8:56 AM
I really don't think TDKR had much VFX other than the Bat and the Batpod. Most of the prologue was done practical.
GuardianAngel - 12/1/2012, 8:58 AM
As for the Avengers, while the Hulk was cool and all, most of the CGI (especially in the climax) wasn't anything sppecial.

And don't even get me started on TASM...
superotherside - 12/1/2012, 8:59 AM
Avengers. Hulk looked fantastic nuff said.
ricko8687 - 12/1/2012, 8:59 AM
Of course the Avengers, also Prometheus , Total Recall, Men in Black, And even though it bombed at the box office, Battleship
marvel72 - 12/1/2012, 9:10 AM

I liked the Avengers, but to be honest the VFX work was nothing to write home about.

I hope The Hobbit ends up winning based on what I've seen so far.
dadisatish - 12/1/2012, 9:52 AM
im with LEVITIKUZ ....life of pi will win.....
dadisatish - 12/1/2012, 9:54 AM
if u people dont think tat life of pi will win then u havent seen the movie...and i LOVE tdkr...
NanoMachines - 12/1/2012, 9:58 AM
1)Life of Pi
2)The Hobbit

It's not surprising that the general audiences are just choosing their favorite movies, and not concentrating on what the category is saying i.e. VFX not "My favorite movie should win this year."
Thythoutrust - 12/1/2012, 10:00 AM
anyone NOT saying Life of Pi should win just hasn't seen the movie.
IIIAdamantiumIII - 12/1/2012, 10:05 AM
spider-man had some amazing effects , the avengers at times looked bland
M3T4LL0 - 12/1/2012, 10:23 AM

About TASM, The Lizard looked like garbage. Nuff Said.
Jolt17 - 12/1/2012, 10:37 AM
Life of Pi, Cloud Atlas, Prometheus, John Carter, and The Hobit: An Unexpected Journey are my contenders.

I went with Men in Black III in the poll, but I really can't decide whether that or Chronicle, the movie which should've been included in the list as well. Men in Black III's effects were great and balanced, while Chronicle's might be dodgy at places (due to its budget, I reckon), but I still can't take the movie's flying scene out of my mind. It really stood out, for me.
Nubase - 12/1/2012, 10:37 AM
life of pi will win this hands down!, watch it and you will know why

The oscars and the people who control it will never allow a cbm to win, nominate maybe but win no.
Nubase - 12/1/2012, 10:39 AM
Oh and l'm sure the hobbit will have a shout, if that movie can recapture the magic that the LOTR trilogy gave, that movie will win it, looking forward to watching the hobbit on imax shortly.
AlexDeLarge87 - 12/1/2012, 11:06 AM
Havent seen Life of Pi or Cloud Atlas yet so i vote Prometheus.
ThePowerCosmic - 12/1/2012, 11:08 AM
The Hulk and Leviathan ships/creatures in The Avengers make it a sure winner for me. Those looked so real flying through the city. the lighting was perfect! There were only two quick shots in the movie I felt could have used some work.
UrbanKnight - 12/1/2012, 11:31 AM
Meh...The Avengers effects where semi photorealistic 80% of the time but had little weight. Physics didn't look "real". Excess doesn't equal quality.

Life of Pi had the most beautiful effects.

TDKR had the best practical effects.

TASM had nice moments like the swinging but lizard was not very well designed or executed.

Prometheus had beautiful, photorealistic, and good physics.
I think it should take the gold this year.
Pharaoh - 12/1/2012, 11:34 AM
not seen Life of Pi but plan too

Wrath of the Titans is supposed to have dope vfx not seen that yet either

Spider-Man had some good vfx
Men in Black 3 was decent also
Prometheus was ok

others I've not seen would be Total Recall and Ghostrider 2

yourdaddy - 12/1/2012, 11:37 AM
are you kidding me with twilight and hunger games?

i can understand if you liked the films. really. it's fine. but they don't deserve to be even considered for the special effects category.

no debate about it.

all of the 10 finalists had vastly superior special effects. hobbit hasn't even come out yet, but gollum from the trailers is way more worthy of the special effects oscar than anything in hunger games or twilight.
whiteassmatt - 12/1/2012, 11:53 AM
Wait a minute... We shouldn't vote for the movie we like? You guys really want life of pi to win. I believe the man who gave us that movie also gave us a terrible hulk movie, a terrible ninja movie (with people running up trees), and a movie about gay cowboys. Some one tell me if I missed something? They couldn't pay me to see a movie that ang lee made. Avengers... Deal with it.
xRelentlessx - 12/1/2012, 11:54 AM
I actually think The Hobbit's effects look the best...I'm not even a LOTR fan..
PeterParker1991 - 12/1/2012, 12:33 PM
TDKR, Avengers, Amazing Spiderman and the Hobbit
BlueDemon - 12/1/2012, 1:08 PM
I vote for Life of POONTANG Pi cause who doesn't like Pi.

birdfists - 12/1/2012, 1:35 PM
What effects did TDKR even have? vehicles? A crappy explosion? A city-wide view?

In that case Spider-Man has it beat.
Funsize - 12/1/2012, 2:08 PM
Prometheus, Avengers, Hobbit,
deadpool123 - 12/1/2012, 2:33 PM
3.-The amazing spiderman
JokerFan21 - 12/1/2012, 2:50 PM
In no particular order my predictions:
Life of Pi
The Dark Knight Rises
The Avengers
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
DanteSparda - 12/1/2012, 2:53 PM
Avengers of course, just remember the Hulk, SHIELD's Helicarrier, Ironman VS Thor, the Chitaru and the alien Quetzalcoatls.
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 12/1/2012, 4:33 PM
Smh VFX is not CGI explosions morons.

Life of Pi & Prometheus.
rottencotten - 12/1/2012, 10:14 PM
I am surprised to not see Ghost Rider or Dark Shadows on either of the lists...From the choices given

1.Avengers- Tony flying through the wormhole and seeing all the ships wins it for me...

2.Prometheus- Although it left more questions than gave answers...the effects were spectacular, especially in 3D...

3.The Hobbit- From what I've seen of this already it's going to be mind-blowing...

4.The Dark Knight Rises- The Pittsburgh Stadium blowing-up was horrible, but the bat more than made up for it...

5.John Carter- I have not seen Life of Pi...should I...?
Equivocal - 12/2/2012, 12:22 AM
and the Oscar goes to:

- The Avengers or

- Life of Pi !
GetsugaTensho22 - 12/2/2012, 3:58 AM
Prometheus. Look guys, while it's okay for you to like Avengers, don't let that blind you into voting for a movie with clearly superior visual FX.
CimJerrey - 12/2/2012, 7:32 AM
amazing spiderman FTW !!!
thejon93rd - 12/2/2012, 8:53 AM
Prometheus should win this... easily some of the best effects that I've ever seen on film. For art direction and settings, the film's a visual masterpiece.
