Scarlett Johansson Says 'Black Widow's Past Catches Up To Her In AVENGERS: AOU

In a very brief interview with IGN, the Captain America: The Winter Soldier actress drops a few hints about what we can expect from Black Widow's arc in Joss Whedon's Avengers sequel. More after the jump.

We already know that Black Widow has "red in her ledger", and in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the character's checkered past is touched upon yet again - if only very briefly. But it seems Miss Romanov will have to face her demons head on in Joss Whedon's Age Of Ultron..and she may not be the only one. "In Avengers 2 we go back..we definitely learn more about Widow's back-story, and get to find out how she became the person you see," Johansson reveals to IGN when quizzed about what we can expect from Romanov's arc in the sequel to Marvel's The Avengers. "All of these characters have deep, dark pasts, and I think that the past catches up to some of us a little bit." Can we assume that Ultron uses Widow's lethal history as an assassin to try to break her spirit? It certainly sounds as if she and the rest of our heroes may have to face up to certain mistakes they've made anyway. You can see the video at the link below.

Finally, the news I want to hear that bitch has it coming
Nomis - 3/19/2014, 8:54 PM
Can you? Can you wipe out that much red?"
Interestein - 3/19/2014, 8:56 PM
Ultron will use her past against her and force the team not to trust her.

I know right Drakov's daughter,São Paulo, and The Hospital Fire.My sources say her ledger's dripping red.
batz11 - 3/19/2014, 9:03 PM
I really don't care this much about Widow...
Humby - 3/19/2014, 9:05 PM
Not that this is particularly relevant, but I hope they go back to her Iron Man 2 hair style in AoU. Wasn't a fan of her look in Avengers, and her look in Cap 2 doesn't seem much better.

@ GallifreyanHero - Exactly. I'm curious to see what she did and why Hawkeye dind't follow through with killing her .

Ultron's gonna be like..

Listen bitch...
staypuffed - 3/19/2014, 9:15 PM
what's with the Widow hate? She's awesome!
MrGlass - 3/19/2014, 9:15 PM
Instead of Aaron Taylor they should have casted Aaron Paul as Quicksilver

and instead of casting Aaron Taylor in Godzilla they should have casted none other than Aaron Paul aka Jesse Pinkman

Heisenberg & pinkman vs GODZILLA!
RorMachine - 3/19/2014, 9:16 PM
Well considering she's an infinitely more interesting character than Thor, I certainly hope so! Thor is a near invulnerable demigod that flys and throws a cool hammer around. Does it make for some great action? Sure, but aside from a few daddy issues there isn't a whole lot more to him..if it wasn't for Loki he'd actually be pretty bland.
MrGlass - 3/19/2014, 9:17 PM
Look at him wearing quicksilvers uniform
cops can't catch him!

ComicsBornAndBred - 3/19/2014, 9:18 PM
Maybe her origin in the Red Room and Russia will be examined. Her Soviet/KGB background. In the clinics, Widow is long loved due to experimentation by the Red Room, a covert facility that trained female orphans to become Black Widows aka femme fat ale assassins (The film SALT kinda stole from this idea). I want to see Widow's true backstory which is her beginnings in 1940d Russia being trained and molded by KGB

So finally the mewling quim will have her back story surface.

Which brings me to assume and hope that she'll be killed off in Age of Ultron.
IFeelLikePablo - 3/19/2014, 9:19 PM

Marvel's getting there
Scarilian - 3/19/2014, 9:19 PM
Have her be killed off - sacrificing herself to prevent someone from her past killing the team. Then we can have a prequel film with her and hawkeye (Or the Winter Soldier) showing us her backstory

She's only in the movie for eye candy and people are getting annoyed with that - she's not the best actress and she's currently pregnant so that's going to end up delaying future films or forcing rushed filming considering she was meant to have a large part in Avengers AoU.

Not to mention that she's arguably the 2nd weakest member of The Avengers and the film series seems to be pushing the whole 'spy' thing when they should be showing us her backstory instead.

If a character has to die in AoU which seems more and more likely - then Hawkeye and Black Widow are the most likely.

@RobinPinkMan, Loki said it in The Avengers to Black Widow. I think i got the right spelling of the two words.

@Mightyzeus I know hahaha thats why its hillarious

Hawkeye comics origin kinda sucks but his Ultimaite version is okay...experimented on with super soldier serum that enhanced his agility, perception and senses only. He was an Exxon who claimed to be a former Olympic archer. May have towels the origin a little bit. Maybe he was an ex con who was adept in gamekeeper type hunting/rural guerrilla warfare. Outdoors type assasin who hunts his targets like prey in a jungle and was then experimented on by SHIELD.l and recruited by then when they iotixed his talent. Sit make him just a regular run ogre kill assain who just happens to use a now. Maybe he was a kjnd of nomadic hermit who was contracted by individuals when they needed someone covert to get the obj done. He grew up hunting and living I the wilderness and treated his assassins trade like hunting animals. He's adept with a bow. Idk. Hawkeye a difficult character to crack. I'm kinda sick of the military/ assassins origins. Its too easy. I have I no problem with Falcon ow beig a vet cause his original origin is kinda far fetched and blacksploitation like. Outside the box please.

If the women are strong in the MCU then we get heroes like Ms. Marvel.
Starkasm - 3/19/2014, 10:07 PM
Wouldn't it be cool if Winter soldier joined the fight and it will be the first time that he and Cap have fought together since WW2. Kinda like the comics when he helps him take down Red Skull's robot.
Tainted87 - 3/19/2014, 10:09 PM
I don't get the Black Widow hate... never have, really.
Destined - 3/19/2014, 10:18 PM
@NpaMusic ikr! I can hear James Spader voice saying that oh so well. He really has no effs to give on The Blacklist, hopefully his Ultron is like that as well.
dethpillow - 3/19/2014, 10:26 PM
@0mega - "profound in his simplicity".... right on. perfect way of putting it.

it's this and also the setting of Asgard that makes Thor great, and of course, just the culture clash between him and whoever he's around. Thor is really an amazing character for how entirely blank he is. i mean maybe the whole role in relation to Odin and Asgard and kingliness people might read as character, but i see it more like part of the trappings of Asgard and his situation.

it would be different if we really felt he gave something up to side with Midgard. like if Thor gave up his godliness or something, and they've played with that stuff, but it's just never really added up to anything.

and i think also, like in the Butcher story you mentioned, it really brings a lot of life to Thor to see his young self and his aged kingly self throughout certain stories. that was a great story arc.
RamonSuarez - 3/19/2014, 10:30 PM

Nor do I. There is a disturbing trend of misogyny when it comes to female characters that one sees among the fanboy community. They're way too happy to see strong female characters either killed or ignored.
dethpillow - 3/19/2014, 10:31 PM
sometimes it seems like Thor's like the setup for a delivery that he's allowed to deliver on, cuz it's a comic book and Marvel has to keep Thor going.

but in certain ways, Thor makes most sense as being a sacrificial character, like some kinda Christ. he's a naive fool into this moment... and then he shows the genius of a fool in laying down his life. but he's never allowed to do that, so he's just perpetually dependent on supporting cast and situational comedy of one sort or another. Thor's great tho, not knocking him.
MrGlass - 3/19/2014, 10:34 PM
dethpillow - 3/19/2014, 10:41 PM
@RamonSuarez - especially cuz Widow is actually one of the most singular and developed female characters that Marvel has rights to right now.

I mean, the best to me are for sure X-Men. for some reason, X-Men has so many great female characters. and also there's Scarlet Witch, who I think is very distinct and a great character.

But Black Widow actually has conflicts and needs and faults just like a male character does. Cuz the problem i have with a lot of female characters is that they just end up being faceless and kinda bland and basically interchangeable. Everyone can always project things onto any character so it's always potentially insulting to say that any character is bland, so I won't go into a list of who I see nothing interesting about. And like I was just saying about Thor, sometimes, blankness serves a character pretty well.

But Black Widow is not blank, she's totally a rad character, one of the most interesting and powerful females in comic books, i think. And I think what it is.. is a large part simply that. She uses sex, (actually she doesn't much any more it seems like) but in theory, she uses sex to her advantage. And I think guys actually really have a problem with supporting roles that undermine the system going on here. Especially roles that play within the system, and still grant this power to females. Cuz she's by no means some kind of feminist dream heroine. She plays inside the rules of the system, and she wins. So there's that part, and guys can only go... hey, bad ass chick yeah, for so long before they get threatened about it, possibly. I haven't followed it enough to go much further than that broad and kinda generic thing i just said.

For me, personally, I have a dislike for Widow in Iron Man 2 and Avengers cuz I just don't think Johansson is the right actress. She's too finite, and if you look in her eyes, you see the back of her eyes. She's a human, and it's not within her, I think to play like she's not. She's doughy.
Black Widow should be something that scares us. Uma Thurman, Charlize Theron, kinda more actresses like that, i see as pulling off Widow better. i guess a bunch of people could. Johansson just a bad choice, in my opinion.
UltimateHunt - 3/19/2014, 10:42 PM
damn this movie it is getting serious. now that Marvel secures money, and the fans Joss is doing serious dark, GENIUS!!!!
