THE AVENGERS: Alternate Designs For The Chitauri & The Quinjet

Conceptual artist, Phil Saunders, has now uploaded more concept art from Marvel's The Avengers. These images feature alternate designs for the Chitauri and the Quinjet. Check them out!

"I had a brief stint working on the Ch'tauri (though they weren't called that at the time) while in the Visual Development department. I took a couple of passes of refining Justin Sweet's original designs and attempting to define the look of the armor & weapons and how they might integrate into the creature. Ultimately Ryan Meinerding developed the final look in Z-Brush. " - Phil Saunders

"I imagined the helmet as being a little deceiving, so that ultimately when the mask was ripped off you would find that the creature had air holes in the place of eyes, which would actually be to either side of the mouth. I also liked the idea of some kind of "light chainsaw" that would wrap around the forearm. Kind of the hedge trimmer of your nightmares. " - Phil Saunders

"The next thing I worked on was the Quinjet. The initial mandate was a craft that could carry the team plus pilots, travel at hypersonic speeds and take off and land vertically on a carrier deck or in the middle of Times Square. It needed to have windows in the roof (to see Thor land on it in flight) and a ramp opening in the back for loading.

My first ideas never went past the rough sketch form as Jos Whedon considered them too sci-fi:" - Phil Saunders

"The design was refined to more of a conventional aircraft with some F-35 characteristics and variable geometry in the cockpit section like the Concord. The nose could drop and the wing tips fold down, giving it a bird of prey attitude during VTOL, as the unfinished sketch at the bottom shows." - Phil Saunders

"Ultimately Production Designer James Chinlund was looking for a more brutal, ground attack craft aesthetic and the need to cross the globe in an hour was no longer a priority, so the aerodynamic qualities were downplayed and I pursued this concept that's a little more A10 Warthog-like:" - Phil Saunders

"Early work in progress gives a peek in to my process, as well as showing my initial thought as to how this would work in VTOL mode, but the design was rejected as still too streamlined and futuristic before I could develop it any further." - Phil Saunders

Marvel's The Avengers picks up when an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security. And Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. With director Joss Whedon at it's helm, and an ensemble cast including Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Chris Hemsworth (Thor Odinson), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff), Clark Gregg (Agt. Phil Coulson), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), with Tom Hiddleston (Loki), and Stellan Skarsgard (Professor Erik Selvig).

Those Chitauri designs are dynamite. If we see the Chitauri again, I hope to see those designs used.

Those Chitauri designs look like Joel Schumacher COLORFUL designs with PRETTY PINK lights.
Joel Schumacher likes pretty lights. He would approve.
BIGBMH - 1/23/2013, 12:36 PM
Pretty cool! The sword is very Halo-esque.
Durf - 1/23/2013, 12:39 PM
Those Chitauri designs are actually pretty cool
GetsugaTensho22 - 1/23/2013, 12:51 PM
Let me rephrase.
I personally dislike the designs used, immensely! I don't feel that they were anything more than cannon fodder and were extremely forgettable. Also visually, there's nothing interesting about them.

@ATastyBurger: The second design is fantastic! Where is it from?
Durf - 1/23/2013, 12:57 PM
@Godzilla: that's an Elite from the Halo series
GodzillaKart - 1/23/2013, 1:01 PM
Cool! It makes a better Chitauri than the Chitauri.
DrDoom - 1/23/2013, 1:20 PM
Definitely see the Halo influence. But that's okay, because Halo has some of the best artistic design of any game franchise.

I think it would have been great for the Chitauri to have had some blade design with them, the spear thing they used was pretty cool but felt like it wasn't enough to take on the six Avengers. A good blade struggle would have been pretty cool to see.

However, I am happy as to how they were in the movie. Just wish it were the heroes who defaced the Chitauri instead of it being themselves.

Love the quinjet designs.
Alvahnomicron - 1/23/2013, 2:55 PM
Waaaait, that's Bayformer Megatron.
Necroxide - 1/23/2013, 3:28 PM
HOO! the Chitauri variants are cool as HELL ,
I think Avengers would have been even better if there was differant chitauri 'classes' in the movie.
NightForce - 1/23/2013, 3:39 PM
Took the words outta my mouth I was just going to write that. Definitely should have been different soldier classes (Heavy, light, scout, sniper, melee) and also some bigger almost Hulk-sized ones would have made it more of a challenge (I guess that's what I mean by heavy). Would have been cool to see Hulk and Thor fight something like that.
NightForce - 1/23/2013, 3:41 PM
Also would've preferred a slightly sleeker Quinjet, but that's just a little nitpick.
LEEE777 - 1/23/2013, 3:59 PM
Very cool, thumbs!

CharlesLord - 1/23/2013, 8:04 PM
dear lord those are some scary lookin things
CaptainDoctorIamTheLaw - 1/23/2013, 8:48 PM
They could have used all those designs as different classes of Chiutari soldiers.
AztecRainGod - 1/23/2013, 8:58 PM
One could definitely nit-pic at the fact that there were no different classes of soldiers in the movie. It would have made it more realistic. Whatever though
AztecRainGod - 1/23/2013, 9:00 PM

These designs look badass, shit, some of this stuff would have made Iron Man look dated and ancient.
mgeoff88 - 1/23/2013, 9:40 PM
Awesome stuff! I love the Quinjet concept art.
