The Avengers Movie Rumor Roundup

<i>The Avengers</i> Movie Rumor Roundup

Though Marvel Studios is still half a year away from starting production on their highly anticipated ensemble film, the rumor stream surrounding has been continuous. Follow the jump to read them all...

The Avengers in undoubtedly the riskiest movie that Marvel Studios has planned. It will be the first big-budget film to feature an amalgam of mainstream superheroes, each of which will have their own respective 'prequels,' facing a common enemy on the silver screen. For fans of Marvel comics, it is both highly anticipated and very worrisome. It has already been confirmed that The Avengers will begin production in early 2011, which is still at least seven months away, but the rumors surrounding the project are abundant. If you're having a hard time staying up to date on The Avengers movie gossip, here's a breakdown of what we've heard so far:

- Joss Whedon, who was behind many popular television series including Buffy, Angel and Firefly, has been in negotiations to direct The Avengers for some time now. Though no official announcement has been made, several leading news sites have confirmed this information. His Marvel Studios directorial package includes script rewrites for the Captain America and Avengers films.

- So far, the confirmed line up of both primary and secondary characters for The Avengers is Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Black Widow/Agent Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg).

- Edward Norton, who portrayed Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk, has told the media that his reprisal in The Avengers is up to the fanbase. No official word about any negotiations currently underway between Norton and Marvel Studios has been released.

- Don Cheadle, who portrayed LTC Jim 'Rhodey' Rhodes/War Machine in Iron Man 2, was asked about his involvement in future Marvel Studios films, to which he answered: "I think we'll see War Machine in Avengers, but not necessarily on the team.."

- Late last year, The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner told the press that he was in talks with Marvel Studios to portray their skilled archer Clint Barton/Hawkeye for the film. Renner went as far as to see several costume designs for the character, and called them "weird." No word has been reiterated regarding this casting since Renner picked up an Oscar nomination this year.

- Actor and model Kevin Pennington has signed a three picture deal with Marvel Studios, though neither he nor his management team are aware of what the actual role is. He will supposedly be portraying a fan-favorite Marvel Comics character, who has been 'revamped' as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in their films.

- Elektra star Jennifer Garner is allegedly being pursued by Marvel Studios for an "upcoming, undisclosed role" in either The Avengers or Captain America.

- Marvel Studios is also rumored to be in final negotiations with either Alice Eve (She's Out of My League) or Malin Akerman (Watchmen) for another role that is "important in their universe and whichever actress gets cast will potentially have the largest female role in the film." The two supposed character options are either Janet Van Dyne/The Wasp or S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Carol Danvers/Ms. Marvel.

- Two different news sites are reporting contradictory stories that Nathan Fillion is in talks to portray Hank Pym/Ant-Man (or Giant-Man) in the film. While one site claims that Fillion is an official candidate for the role, another says there is absolutely no basis to the rumor.

- LOST star Josh Holloway has been recently linked to a "lead" role in The Avengers. Since he is considered a 'name actor,' the exact details of his supposed role would have to be finalized before he signs onto the film.

- The original Avengers movie script was penned by Zak Penn, who was also a scribe on X Men 2, The Incredible Hulk and Elektra. Since news that Joss Whedon signed on to direct The Avengers, he has supposedly been busy doing heavy rewrites on the script in preparation for a production start date sometime in early 2011.

- It was reported exclusively here that The Avengers will introduce the alien race the Skrulls and the Kree to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Their roles will be clandestine, much like how S.H.I.E.L.D. operates, and their actions will cause more than likely cause a full-on alien invasion in one of the sequels.

- Along with Kevin Pennington's casting came the rumor that he will portray the cosmic hero Captain Marvel (either Mar'Vell or Noh'Varr), who happens to have a strong association with the Kree alien race, in The Avengers. This rumor was dismissed when Pennington's agent contacted me last week with an official denial, but disclosed that his role would be revealed soon.

- The director on an upcoming Avengers animated film confirmed that the famous S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier will appear in the live action film: ""Certain things like the S.H.I.E.L.D helicarrier were made more modern than in the comics in order to fit in with designs they are working on for the Avengers movie." He went on to say that the superpowered heroine known as Ms. Marvel may also appear in the film.

Finally, here are a few random tidbits from around the internet regarding the film:

- The Avengers will not be the main focus of Marvel Studios until Captain America: The First Avenger is wrapped.

- The script is currently being tweaked and perfected to make sure the film emphasizes the core Avengers group and has a great story that will please the audience.

- The site responsible for the rumored cast additions of Kree aliens Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel have now contradicted themselves by saying the Kree aliens will not appear in The Avengers.

- Marvel continually meets with actors to sign them and place them in films when they find a fit for them. [EDITOR'S NOTE: Meaning, actors the studio specifically want could be put on retainer for roles that they are unaware of, since the roles may be modified during script rewrites}

- During the 2010 San Diego Comic Con International, fans will have some official details about the film's main influence, villains and new addition to the character roster.

I thought i remember Kevin Fiege saying in an article that The Hulk will be in it, but not sure about Bruce Banner? does that sound familiar?
Rock317 - 5/31/2010, 4:51 PM
@Joey - Dude, ya. That Captain America with Chris looks BAD AZZ! haha.

And Multi THX for the update! Somebody needs to keep track of this stuff :)

Im really looking forward to the Avengers as well as the cartoon! Isn't it gonna air on Cartoon Network? But since Disney owns Marvel shouldn't it be on Disney? haha
zippiesdrainage - 5/31/2010, 4:51 PM
The whole Bucky thing for the Cap movie seems weak, I like the story, but Bucky was from a different time and Cap shouldn't have a 12 year old sidekick. I think to build into Bucky's involvement in the sequels he should be a traitor from the beginning and be the cause of Cap falling into the ocean at the end to build the distrust early for his return later. Or go Tyler Durden and have Bucky just be a figment of Cap's imagination as a side effect of the Super Soldier Serium.
TheAmazingSmitty - 5/31/2010, 4:51 PM
@ Joey Misfit
I think that description of Cap's Suit is only for the WW2 Era, perhaps his Modern Suit will resemble that one more.
I remember him saying that too, but I can't recall where I saw that.
TheAmazingSmitty - 5/31/2010, 4:54 PM
Bucky isn't going to be 12 years old in this movie. Sebastian Stan, the guy playing Bucky is nowhere near 12 years old. They couldn't do that with him even if they wanted to. What I'm thinking is Bucky will be behind the scenes doing the brutal killing, while Cap fights the Nazis publicly.
Runefyst - 5/31/2010, 4:58 PM
This is either gonna be one've the best movies of all time or a complete bust....only time will tell. *fingers crossed*

There has been speculation and little bits of info for quite some time about the Edgar Wright directed Ant-Man adaptation for Marvel Studios, there has also been speculation as to whether or not Ant-Man/Dr. Henry “Hank” Pym would be making an appearance in Marvel Studios‘ big screen version of The Avengers.

Now we have word from Marvelous News (via Bleeding Cool) that inside sources are telling them that Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle) is virtually locked to play Henry Pym.

“Nathan Fillion is pretty much locked to be Henry Pym, and should be announced before any other new additions to the cast (think around Comic Con)”

This is all (of course) rumor at this point and hasn’t been confirmed or denied by the studio or Fillion’s reps. We will definitely bring you the news if/when someone does… so, stay tuned!

jazzman - 5/31/2010, 5:37 PM

she did leave Marvel Studio with The Avengers comic book but she did say shes not casted as the Wasp

GUNSMITH - 5/31/2010, 5:38 PM

jazzman - 5/31/2010, 5:42 PM

your not the only one lol

how dare u say Epic Fail to Eva Longoria :p

TANKGIRL - 5/31/2010, 5:46 PM
SirPrize you are an epic fail
InTylerWeTrust - 5/31/2010, 6:21 PM
Baccarin is unattractive (IMO) and was flat and boring in Firefly.

Longoria is hot but is a poor actress.
TDKR11 - 5/31/2010, 6:40 PM
I wonder how Marvel are planing on telling a great Avenger story, if their adding so many Marvel characters or cameos to this film.

I think....

Captain America
Iron Man
Ant Man
Nick Fury
Black Widow

and the alien invasion of the Skrulls as the big bad, are enough to tell a good Avengers story. My only concern for this movie is Marvel is to focus on revealing a bunch of cameos or easter eggs then telling a great live action Avengers story. I hope I'm wrong about that.
ukboy28 - 5/31/2010, 7:05 PM
great article multi :)

Runefyst@ in totally agreement man, crossing fingers and toes lol :D
SkWiRlDaDdY - 5/31/2010, 7:26 PM
Dude I live in San Antonio, I've met Longoria and shes a b!&@#! No way does she work in the marvel universe!! Im with @ tankgirl morena baccarin for wasp!
claybo4131 - 5/31/2010, 7:36 PM
Yeah @skwirl I met Longoria once when they had a game up here, she wasnt nice at all to any of the fans, especially guys, she was rude when they were being charming to her. Cmon Eva, you play a woman who likes boytoys on a tv show, It comes with the territory and no one knew what she did BEFORE Housewifes, and what has she done really movie wise during her tenure on the show
claybo4131 - 5/31/2010, 7:38 PM
Reason I know is I work security detail for the Dallas Mavericks, she is never really greatful to anyone who helps her get to and from the arena and expects to be treated special. Some of the waiters/waitresses that serve down at that level say shes a terrible tipper as well.

And we have had several famous people here at the AAC, WAY more than that during All Star Weekend this past year
SkWiRlDaDdY - 5/31/2010, 7:43 PM
yeah my little cuz was asking tony parker for his autograph.(why i dont know) and she told him that they didnt have time for that. Parker said he did and signed it any way which made her look like a bigger deuche!
claybo4131 - 5/31/2010, 7:49 PM
I wont work around her when the Spurs are in town, if my supervisor tells me to do detail for Tim Duncan I will, the players are very grateful all the time, A lot of them are very nice and I have met just about all the NBA players and know all the Mavericks players myself (Actually saw Iron Man 2 with Shawn Marion) but Eva isnt that great of an actress to begin with. I cant name a single movie she has been in since she has been on Housewives. My wife doesnt watch that show, Ive seen it a few times and had no idea what it was about.

I wasnt asking her for an autograph or photo I was just doing my job. I asked her if she needed anything and she said Dont ask me again, If I need anything I will get it myself and I was just trying to tell her I was doing my job.

One of the waitresses told me after she brought down all this food and beer for her (I mean Pizza, Nachos, Hot Dogs) that she only tipped her 3 bucks....3 BUCKS. I know lots of people that sit courtside that have been known to tip up to 100 bucks, not a lot of them are tightwads. 3 Bucks and you are a TV star, cmon.
StephenStrange - 5/31/2010, 7:54 PM
If Jennifer Garner gets cast as The Wasp, I bet we'll have to read hundreds of comments of dorks complaining about how she can't be Wasp and Elektra too
SkWiRlDaDdY - 5/31/2010, 7:57 PM
Yeah Pretty much all the spurs players are pretty cool, with the exception of a few ex players.(cough robert horry) any way sorry bout this season... beating the mavericks in the playoffs is like a championship in itself!! lol.
spiderman620 - 5/31/2010, 7:59 PM
it was said during last years comic con
SUPASEGO - 5/31/2010, 8:00 PM
morena baccarin is hot
SkWiRlDaDdY - 5/31/2010, 8:01 PM
I think avengers will have a sequel there's no way they can fit all these characters in one movie! i just don't want it to seemed rushed at the end like IM2. I want to savor this greatness!
claybo4131 - 5/31/2010, 8:10 PM
@skwirld Not trying to stir up the rivalry, I was jsut stating what I observed about her. Besides, I got to get married earlier, we were waiting till after the season, and well Mr Cuban let us use Victory Plaza outside the arena for our wedding. We didnt have a date set till the playoffs ended lol, we kind of just said ok lets do it then before we both turn 30 in July. Besides Im hoping we get LeBron, but thats another subject for another type of message board we wont talk about it here(Yeah try to fine me now Stern)

Back on topic I bet the Avengers will have a sequel, No way will Marvel do this as a one shot movie after it makes all this money at the box office, no way is it a one-off film like Titanic is. I think they only considered Eva Longoria for Wasp is the woman is only 5'1'' and has a very tiny frame on her. I know she has a 0 waist size, but yet I see this woman eat all this arena food like she was Jabba the Hutt
cockroach86 - 5/31/2010, 8:16 PM
The only way I see this movie being any good is if it is at least 3-4 hours in length. There's just way too many characters and such a large story to explain on screen. I have a feeling that anything less than 3 hours of screen time will cause way too many plot holes and basically make this movie look like swiss cheese when all is said and done. This movie is a MASSIVE undertaking and I hope they show this film some justice.
GUNSMITH - 5/31/2010, 8:30 PM
STOOPUDR - 5/31/2010, 8:36 PM
The Avengers movie is going to be epic, and I was waiting for one of you guys to mention Lebron with all of the basketball talk. I am from Cleveland, and I hope you are disapointed claybo4131.

The problem I have with the Longoria rumor is I can see her in the suit playing the wasp, I cannot see her as Pym. She just does not come off intelligent or sudtle enough. I always thought she was more the type you would see as attractive, but not quite know why. Eva is just too hot for the part.

Morianna Baccarin looks perfect (very hot but not too hot), and seems like she could carry herself very well. But I do not remember seeing her in anything but V. Has she been in anything else?
cockroach86 - 5/31/2010, 8:39 PM
@STOOPUDR - Baccarin was also in Stargate Sg-1, Firefly, and Serenity. I think she was also in some other shows but I can't recall right now.
