Tony "Iron Man" Stark's New Ride Made Specifically For The Avengers!

Tony "Iron Man" Stark's New Ride Made Specifically For The Avengers!

There's been some speculation on why Tony Stark has ditched his signature Audi R8 for The Avengers, and it turns out Acura built the vehicle specifically for the movie. Hit the jump for details and a somewhat crazy theory...

Auto Blog has the following statement from Acura spokesman Gary Robinson, who sheds some light on the decision to switch for his trademark Audi R8 to a vehicle which left motoring enthusiasts completely baffled; a mysterious Acura sports car. While this is pretty unexciting compared to the fantastic set photos of the cast we've seen over the past 48 hours (find 'em all HERE) hopefully this will satisfy the curiosity of some!

"As you may know, Acura has been in the Marvel Comics Universe films as the official car of their fictional law enforcement agency called S.H.I.E.L.D. That relationship continues for The Avengers. The open-top sports car that was photographed yesterday is a one-off, fictional car that was made just for the movie and will not be produced. That said, as you may also know, our CEO has said publicly that we are studying the development of a new sportscar, but we can't say any more about it at this time."

You know, I look at that "fictional vehicle" and can't help but think of this...

I'm not necessarily talking about the specific model, but we did see a Howard Stark prototype in Captain America: The First Avenger, so who's to say Tony hasn't come up with a little something since Iron Man 2? Plus, we've got a Quinjet, so why not? It's highly unlikely, but it would be pretty freaking cool all the same, right? Of course, the real reason for this is Marvel Studios' partnership with Acura, but a fanboy can dream! Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

bleedthefreak - 9/3/2011, 1:10 PM
@FrankGarret: Maybe this movie is really a front for a Tony Stark & Bruce Banner buddy comedy.

Maybe Tony did finish his dads work from cap and made that dope ass flying car.
kevberg - 9/3/2011, 1:14 PM
Cool...Banner and Stark like buds....
Comraderie among scientists .
RaMan - 9/3/2011, 1:14 PM
Banner & Stark are riding off together so they can get in the boxing ring and spar like Rocky & Appollo in 'Rockey III' to end the movie.

[frick] this car is nice! looks like a mixture of audi and ferrari :D
JackBauer - 9/3/2011, 1:52 PM
@Josh - I think you hit the nail on the head with the flying car. In the comics SHIELD and Stark have flying cars and we can't forget the scene in CATFA where his daddy makes a car levitate for a few seconds. I know that morphed into the technology for the suit, but still... :)
nordberg - 9/3/2011, 1:53 PM
Very nice indeed.

Could this be a new NSX?
RyanLantern77 - 9/3/2011, 1:56 PM

BatSlam - 9/3/2011, 2:02 PM
I thought it was a tricked out nsx before I read this article. THey said they are not going to put this in production, but then said they are working on a new sports car in the same sentence.

HuthMFC - 9/3/2011, 6:09 PM
Its the new Acura NSX that the will launch with the Avengers. Just like they launched the Audi R8 with Iron Man.
thalidomide - 9/3/2011, 7:28 PM
lol I'm with Grif, please no flying cars. :)
matrix10st - 9/3/2011, 8:16 PM
I Have my own theory while it may also be a flying car i really think its that car that mr. stark drives where the seat lays all the way down and goes towards the trunk area suiting tony up while on the move. In other words i think its his mobile armory
Tainted87 - 9/3/2011, 8:21 PM
Pretty sure Howard's floating car was meant to foreshadow the Hellicarrier...
mynnDAWG - 9/3/2011, 8:38 PM
Lousy jst becoz of the tie-in btwn acura and marvel. They shld have stuck with the signature R8.
sexymuppet - 9/3/2011, 10:23 PM
holy shit, they have my car!
JohnTom88 - 9/4/2011, 12:44 AM
Marvel likes their Honda, DC is more into Toyota (remember that Thumbler-Toyota F1 team stunt back in 2000's)
Kurbbsyde - 9/4/2011, 3:53 AM
I bet he still has the R8 man. That will be yet another car.
njferns - 9/4/2011, 7:00 AM
Nice but I wish we got bigger pics wish offered a better view of the car...
KingLing - 9/4/2011, 10:53 AM
That theory doesn't really sound so crazy. After the prototype demoed in the First Avenger, that does seem pretty logical. Why else would they have put that scene in there?
