Donal Logue Tries To Convince You A BATMAN-Less GOTHAM Is Worth Watching

The website, IGN, recently chatted with actor Donal Logue ("Ghost Rider") about his upcoming comic book-based television series on Fox, Gotham, in which he plays 'Harvey Bullock.' Hit the jump to check out what he had to say.

Canadian-Irish actor Donal Logue ("The Tao of Steve") is certainly no stew. The seasoned actor has appeared in films like, Blade and Ghost Rider, as well televison shows, Sons of Anarchy and Vikings. His next venture is Fox's latest comic book-based television show, Gotham. He'll play Detective Harvey Bullock, a seasoned cop that helps mentor Jim Gordon as he rises through the ranks of the Gotham police department. Before you get too excited, just remember this show is going to feature a very young Bruce Wayne, who is many years away from becoming The Dark Knight. Will people tune in to a Gotham-oriented show minus the Batman? Maybe Donal can convince you.

"It's interesting because people will say, 'What good is Gotham? A Gotham without Batman is stupid!,'" the actor acknowledged. "What's fascinating about Gotham is like, what happened in the 20 years before Batman was so effed up that it needed a vigilante to come and save it -- and those moral decisions have repercussions. Like, Gordon does stuff that seems to come from a good place, but you can do something and -- this kind of goes back to the statecraft argument -- say, in Vikings time, if I want to kill my enemy, I have to kill his kids. If I don't kill sons, they're coming after me and mine for the rest of our lives. So you've got to pull the root out. That's something that Gordon struggles with, being that brutal. Then later, if some bad s**t goes down, you can say, 'Well, that was your bighearted moment.' It's kind of mock politics, so it'll be interesting to see. I'm super fascinated to see where a lot of these things go. The question is, how did we get there? How did we get to the point where we had to have a Batman?"
As Gordon navigates the often-underhanded politics of Gotham’s criminal justice system, Gordon will confront imposing gang boss FISH MOONEY (Jada Pinkett Smith, “The Matrix” films, “HawthoRNe,” “Collateral”), and many of the characters who will become some of fiction’s most renowned, enduring villains, including a teenaged Selina Kyle/the future Catwoman and Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin.

Cast: James Gordon played by Ben McKenzie (“Southland”), Barbara Kean played by Erin Richards (“Open Grave”), Harvey Bullock played by Donal Logue (“Sons of Anarchy”), Bruce Wayne played by David Mazouz (“Touch”), Fish Mooney played by Will Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith (“Collateral”), Selina Kyle/Catwoman played by Camren Bicondova, Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin played by Robin Lord Taylor (“Another Earth”), Police Captain Sarah Essen played by Zabryna Guevara (“Burn Notice”), Alfred Pennyworth played by Sean Pertwee (“Camelot”).

GOTHAM is based upon characters published by DC Comics and is produced by Warner Bros. Television. Executive producer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist”) wrote the pilot, which will be directed and executive-produced by Emmy Award nominee Danny Cannon (the “CSI” series, “Nikita”).

On paper, this sounds intriguing.
staypuffed - 4/28/2014, 5:46 PM
Nothing about this show excites me. Nothing.
Lozzy - 4/28/2014, 5:50 PM
I doubt it.
WeddingTux - 4/28/2014, 5:53 PM

ManofSteel23 - 4/28/2014, 5:53 PM
I'll watch the pilot and I will judge it from that, so they best make it good
WeddingTux - 4/28/2014, 5:55 PM
...or just wave the cup around like a homeless man begging for change.

GliderMan - 4/28/2014, 6:16 PM
[frick] no I won't watch the pilot. I might watch the Riddler episodes, MAYBE. Ten years from now.

I won't support this DCCU-less shit.

"A BATMAN-Less GOTHAM Is Worth Watching"

Nawww it could be good, but my expectations are very low.
MisterPL - 4/28/2014, 6:22 PM
I don't see it lasting longer than ten years.

Well, if it was on The CW.

Since it's on Fox, it might last a season once they're done jerking it around the schedule.
case - 4/28/2014, 6:24 PM
Onya Donal. That's probably the best way I've heard it described. Still not 100% convinced though.
Ranger14 - 4/28/2014, 6:26 PM
Nope...didn't convince me.
breakneckbeck - 4/28/2014, 6:27 PM
I was about to do a whole rant on how dumb this damn show is starting to seem. I didnt hate the idea at first but good god this now seems like the worst thing ever…. And Donal Logue is just gunna be Donal Logue and not Harvey Bullock
grif - 4/28/2014, 6:30 PM
whats wrong? spent all that money on a show nobody wants to watch. and now you are worried? suck it. never watching this crap
Skintastic - 4/28/2014, 6:32 PM
Umm, did someone say no batman in gotham,

Central city without flash

What a great idea, oh wait, no, thats a terrible idea

But metropolis sounds like a great show
maninfinesuit - 4/28/2014, 6:33 PM
This show's going to be awesome. Ben McKenzie will grow into the definitive Gordon.

Comedian03 - 4/28/2014, 6:34 PM
Maybe this show will surprise me like Arrow did....But then again, Arrow actually has the Green Arrow in it sooooo.
Skintastic - 4/28/2014, 6:34 PM
Especially if it was a silent tv show
Mercwitham0uth - 4/28/2014, 6:34 PM
Try harder.
thebearjew - 4/28/2014, 6:36 PM

marvel72 - 4/28/2014, 6:38 PM

ChiliConCarney - 4/28/2014, 6:38 PM
Gotham Girls. 'Nuff said.
GliderMan - 4/28/2014, 6:39 PM
We as fans shouldn't support this waste.
NeoBaggins - 4/28/2014, 6:40 PM
Didn't read. I don't have to be convinced.

BATMAN's presents is cinematic, its an event- not one where he pops up as a TV show character every week. We had that with Adam West. Thanks.

No TV actor would do the role justice and it would clash with what WB is foing film-wise. I would love to see Gotham without Batman with Jim Gordon leading the stories. That's an awesome perspective. Its the type of thing they do in comics, for people that actually read them.

I'm not trying to see a fake ass TV Batman. There are so many interesting stories to tell around him before he becomes Batman.
Skintastic - 4/28/2014, 6:41 PM
@alphaanddecima yeah ya probably got me there, how about this

I think we can just jump straight to where this show is heading

Law and Order: Gotham
blackandyellow - 4/28/2014, 6:43 PM
I'll give the show the first 2 episodes. If they suck I'll never tune back in.
campblood - 4/28/2014, 6:47 PM
he rocks the shit in VIKINGS
maninfinesuit - 4/28/2014, 6:47 PM
Batman is not a difficult character. Television is populated by tons upon tons of brooding heroes. He'll be just fine.

MercwithMouth - 4/28/2014, 6:50 PM
I don't think there's anything that could make this show interesting. The premise almost lost me, and casting JadaFish as the main villain finished it. To quote my buddy Remy, Gotham is DOA...

BeyondTheGrave - 4/28/2014, 7:03 PM
"batman-less gotham..." Why? "cause someone thought it was a good idea" Were they high? "I have to assume so, but we can't be sure...they'd never admit it"
grif - 4/28/2014, 7:04 PM
i guess he wont be riding the gravy train on biscuit wheels
Steelmatic - 4/28/2014, 7:04 PM
So many haters. Give it chance at least. I'll take any comic book related show I can get... if it is complete trash, I'll stop tuning in, but I love the idea.

@ NeoBaggins - Well said...
pintoman - 4/28/2014, 7:06 PM
A series about crime and the hard choices that cops make is one thing but a TV series about only Gotham is a bad idea. You're constantly reminding people what they don't have—Batman. It's like trying to sell Lucky Charms without the marshmellows. If people want cereal without the marshmellows, they'll eat Cheerios. In this case, we'll watch EVERY other cop show ever made.

Mothchild - 4/28/2014, 7:12 PM
I'm behind this show until it proves me wrong
TheOverlord - 4/28/2014, 7:13 PM
I would watch this, except for one thing: Jim Gordon didn't arrive in Gotham until Year One. The end.
mbembet - 4/28/2014, 7:19 PM
so is this supposed to be the prequel to ben affleck batman?
Pedrito - 4/28/2014, 7:19 PM
I'm not watching this nonsense unless three quarters into the season they Hail some major Hydra!
