New Yorker Film Critic David Denby Says Chris Nolan's Batman Films And The Avengers As A Sign Of Hollywood's Bleak Future

In an interview with TheWrap for his new book Do the Movies Have a Future?, David Denby lashes out against Christopher Nolan's Batman films and The Avengers.

In the biggest year for comic book movies, we had two films, The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers, pass the billion dollar mark. Things are looking up for comic book movies but The New Yorker film critic David Denby says otherwise. When talking about Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy he had this to say:

"I can’t tell if he’s against terrorism or is a terrorist, I felt terrorized myself. The plot didn’t make sense in time or space and wasn’t sequential. Acts didn’t have consequences ... I don’t know what comment he’s making in Inception, it seems to be mainly about his own working style.”

Denby went on to say this:“I’m not sure they’re creating an adult audience with Batman and 'The Avengers' parts seven, eight, nine and 10. After five sequels, I’m not sure there will be any interest in seeing a man and woman talking at a table, which may be the most exciting kind of drama, but you have to cultivate a taste for that kind of complexity."

Denby added, “The big studios have broken their unspoken, unwritten contract with America, to offer some version of the country’s soul. ... Instead there is more and more fantasy and more and more pixilated fighting in the dead air of digital space.”

Strong words. Knowing how us comics fans are going to react to this, you have my permission to start the bashing in three, two, one, zero...

You type < blockquote > before the quote, then type < / blockquote > after but take out the spaces.
INSTANTJUSTICE - 10/4/2012, 4:51 PM

He should've gone to see DREDD as should everyone else.

Wildaniel - 10/4/2012, 4:53 PM
Denby is a hater!
Manogeek - 10/4/2012, 4:56 PM
Go figure, the Comic book movie genre is filled with fantasy. Who would have guessed that one.
Jollem - 10/4/2012, 4:58 PM
i would like to know a valid reason why david denby's thought-words should mean anything to me
CaptainObvious - 10/4/2012, 5:00 PM
What's wrong with escapist fantasy?
Niuhll - 10/4/2012, 5:02 PM
He's kind of picking a style of film he likes and complaining another isn't like it. At least, that's what I got.
DioFoRio - 10/4/2012, 5:04 PM
any phucktard that thinks there will never be any more non comic book dramas needs to have his Critic card revoked and ass plowed with a cactus...just to make sure all his self important trite is scrubbed from the hole he spouted this nonsense from.
marvel72 - 10/4/2012, 5:05 PM
more avengers movie = win in my eyes, how is that bleak.
Jollem - 10/4/2012, 5:06 PM
if i thought denby was a reasonable fellow, i would say he left out tasm because it is a good and quality film :)
Jollem - 10/4/2012, 5:09 PM
@cipher - i think i'd rather hear an opinion from a jerkasaurous on this site rather then that mouth-drivel that i just read :)
DioFoRio - 10/4/2012, 5:09 PM
I understand when book people get all snooty and highfalutin...but seriously man, Movies are entertainment. I wish I could punch this twit through my internet provider. Not as much for what he said, but for the whiney pansy ass he's painted himself as.
RunDTC - 10/4/2012, 5:10 PM
Mr. David Denby

masterhater - 10/4/2012, 5:14 PM
What an a**. Sorry he doesn't like action movies. He can stick to boring melodramas!
NostalgicYouth - 10/4/2012, 5:26 PM
Of coarse the first comicbook movie he would bash would be The Dark Knight Rises, like people are making it seem worser then it really is and don't even get me started on the Avengers like really why are there so many cynical people out there?
MisterMagurlypse - 10/4/2012, 5:30 PM
He must just be jealous, his favorite movie Magic Mike just didn't make as much $$$$$ as Avengers. That's the kinda movie magic he likes

Can we sick Griff on him?

Tomontherun99 - 10/4/2012, 5:35 PM
If he doesn't like Hollywood fantasy escapism the low-budget indie scene is full of brilliant movies about real human drama.
batfan175 - 10/4/2012, 5:55 PM
i kinda understad his point because every country's cinema culture is creating interesting low-budget independent fikms, whereas hollywood is stuck in their childlike mentality of big explosions and escapist battles.
NostalgicYouth - 10/4/2012, 5:56 PM
Spider-man had some cool 3D scenes and the cgi was awesome but the story and the characters not so much except for Andrew Garfields portrayel of peter parker that was dynamite!!
superotherside - 10/4/2012, 5:57 PM
Oh what ever.
NostalgicYouth - 10/4/2012, 6:00 PM
Oh excuse me I meant to type The Amazing Spider-man since its the new, darker, hip version of spider-man,I guess I'm still stuck in Raimi land
rockerdude22 - 10/4/2012, 6:03 PM
Get used to it Debney, comic book movies aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Oh whatever, why should I even be acknowledging what this guy is saying? I need a drink...

batfan175 - 10/4/2012, 6:07 PM
on the other hand there was a woman and a man sitting at a table at the end of the dark knight rises so all is well.
rockerdude22 - 10/4/2012, 6:09 PM
@cipher Hey buddy! What kind of beer would you like? I got almost anything here.

MisterMagurlypse - 10/4/2012, 6:10 PM
I don't think Tea could find a bigger boob than this guy!

But, I would like to see him try ;)
rockerdude22 - 10/4/2012, 6:17 PM
@cipher Alright, let's see here. Let's mix together a little Rolling Rock with Budweiser, throw in a little Busch Ice, top it off with some Sam Adams, and voila! A special drink just for you, Cip! Enjoy! *passes drink to cipher*
TheGambitFreak - 10/4/2012, 6:20 PM
CBM's are the cause of a "bleak future" in Hollywood. Um no, wanting to do reboots and re-imaginings of 25+ year old films is what is causing the downfall.
rockerdude22 - 10/4/2012, 6:27 PM
@MARVELPSYCHO79 No problem, man! Enjoy!
GamerKT - 10/4/2012, 6:27 PM
rockerdude22 - 10/4/2012, 6:34 PM
@cipher Cheers! Hope the mix doesn't do too much to ya lol

Azrael725 - 10/5/2012, 7:13 AM
this guy was the first to give The Dark Knight a rotten review. I remember well cuz he got so much shit for it over at Rotten Tomatoes. he's just a hipster hater lol
MisterNiceGuy - 10/5/2012, 7:13 AM
Could it be? Could nolanites and marvelites finally come together on this one
Shadowelfz - 10/5/2012, 7:17 AM
"CBM's are the cause of a "bleak future" in Hollywood. Um no, wanting to do reboots and re-imaginings of 25+ year old films is what is causing the downfall."

Exactly Gambitfreak. In fact I think CBMs are really the only thing keeping cinema afloat. Everything is a reboot, a remake, a reimaging and a million other 're-s.' Creativity is essentially dead in Hollywood. Doubt me? Watch Magic Mike, Battleship and Step Up Revolution. If he's REALLY concerned about the cinemas future he would be more angry at all the cynical studios passing on new, fresh, creative projects to make a movie based off of a board game.

This guy is just a pretentious eltitist snob who cant deal with the fact that 'big budget' action flicks are making the most money instead of some artsy-fartsy indie film. Whatever. [frick] him.
