Last night, the DC Cinematic Universe's Joker was finally revealed by Suicide Squad director David Ayer. Here, we analyse this take on the iconic villain by Oscar winning actor Jared Leto, and ask whether or not they've gone in the right direction for this modern version of The Joker...

Predictably, our first look at The Joker has been met with a mixed reaction. Some love the direction that Warner Bros. are going in for this new take on the iconic Batman villain with actor Jared Leto, while others hate that they're not getting a faithful take on their favourite member of the Caped Crusader's rogues gallery. It's worth bearing in mind that this is an imprisoned Joker and not one who is out in the world making life difficult for Batman, and when he is in that classic purple suit, he'll no doubt look a lot more like the classic Joker we all know and love! Let's take a closer look...

The Smile

Lacking the exaggerated smile from the comic books, Jared Leto's mouth is also extremely different to both the deformed version given to Jack Nicholson in Batman and the scars used for Heath Ledger's version in The Dark Knight. However, the thin lips will no doubt make it appear a little bigger, but it's definitely a normal enough mouth for the most part. However, by far the most interesting thing here are the teeth. All of his front chompers are metal, and if I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it's because they're crowns. Gold ones would have looked a bit silly, and it's believable that a prison or asylum would have only given him the most basic metal ones available regardless. The reason The Joker has them is no doubt because the Caped Crusader has knocked out or damaged them, quite literally ruining the Clown Prince of Crime's smile during their last encounter.

The Hair

It's green. 'Nuff said.

The Skin

He's pale. 'Nuff said.

The Tattoos

"Damaged" - There have been a lot of complaints from fans about this tattoo on The Joker's forhead, but it's no doubt an ironic statement being made by the villain. There are other markings on his face too, though all but the one on his cheek look more like scars than tattoos. They're probably fractures and lacerations from his fights with Batman. Remember, rumour has it that he's one of the few people in the DC Cinematic Universe to have ever met the Gotham City superhero.

"Hahaha" - It's interesting and also kind of random that The Joker is covered in tattoos featuring his trademark laughter, and the font looks very similar to that used in comics like The Killing Joke and Grant Morrison's Arkham Asylum. This seems a tad unecessary, but is still a pretty cool visual.

"The Smiles" - These are pretty out there, and no doubt a nod to The Joker's classic smile. Don't be surprised to see the one on his left hand used to give the impression that he has that grin before revealing his actual messed up mouth. Perhaps he has them to remind himself of the smile he lost after Batman damaged it beyond repair? That would be my guess for their inclusion anyway!

"Harley Quinn" - This is unlikely, but could the skull with a jester's hat be some sort of deranged tip of the hat (no pun intended) to Harley Quinn? That piece of headwear is obviously closely associated with The Joker's sidekick after all, but perhaps it's just where she took inspiration from.

"The Robin" - That looks an awful lot like a robin on The Joker's right bicep and could be a trophy of sorts after he murdered Batman's sidekick years before. We've heard from a number of sources that Robin's costume will be on display in the Batcave, so who else but the Clown Prince of Crime could be responsible for killing the youngster? Don't forget that it's also been rumoured that The Joker [SPOILER] killed Commissioner Gordon [END SPOILER] so maybe he gets a mention too.

The Rest - There's a large tattoo on The Joker's stomach which we're unable to read, not to mention one on the side. Could they reference Batman in some way? The cards meanwhile - which are an iconic piece of imagery when it comes to The Joker -  seem to say "All In" beneath them.

The Hands:

The Joker has a pinkie ring, but it's impossible to say what significance it has when we can't see the design. It's his right hand which is most interesting though as he's wearing a purple glove. Chances are that this could have just been given to Leto for this photo alone - which is definitely channelling The Killing Joke - but there might also be a story reason for his decision to wear it. What that might be at this point is anyone's guess...maybe Batman mangled it or it covers an unwanted tattoo?

So, what do you think about this take on The Joker? As always, let us know your thoughts below!

Concerning the glove - is it just me, or does it look like a disposable plastic glove? Also considering that it's on one hand, it looks a bit like the ones tattoo artists wear.

I love it. Can understand the hate, but he looks insane to me. Most of those tattoos throw it off, but all in all it's pretty wicked.

Nice Article Josh. I like the tats, think it's a cool and inspired character design. Especially given the context of which the film seems to be taken from. Also Joker will most likely have a suit on so I assume we may only see the tats temporarily before he escapes from prison (or have you will).
The damaged tat is a bit cheesy but It certainly doesn't throw the design off and I'm glad Ayer had the balls to do what he did with the teeth. Overall he is still the chaotic and insane clown prince of crime that has come to wreak havoc in Gotham's streets. First look is not much to go by based on the whole film also. Relax nerds

@MrCBM I dig it, but yeah some of the tattoos are unneeded/too on the nose.

I just cannot stand the "damaged" tattoo so I hope they remove that one, unless of course there is some meaning behind it that is actually cool. I like how each of the tattoos speak to his history though, especially the robin one.

I think the tattoos are a bit uneccessary. It's like the Joker gave into the conventions of prison life and is reminiscent of some prison gangster...not indicative of hia character to do so i think. Like expressing his character traits through tattos. I get maybe he's expressing himself in a crazy kind of way, maybe jokingly joining in on the commonalities of prison but.. idk about it. I like how the teeth prob a replacement for joker losing teeth to Batman. It's all a bit Marilyn Manson, Machine gun kelly lol. Kind of looks like a methhead. Maybe it's him inhaling his joker gas for upteen years haha. I feel like Leto had a lot of input. He seems to be into that kind of bohemian, hip kind of psuedo against the norm thing. He iis, according to what I've seen, a hipster kind of guy haha. But, hopefully he does well. Imo, Ledger's amazing performcae, one of the best villian performances in cin email history, can't be touched. Kids certainly can't enjoy this joker lol. They aint selling no Halloween costumes for kids lol.SS prob gonna be rated R.

IM OPTIMISTIC

Anyone else a little skeptical that they revealed this image (that's causing so many people to freak out) on April 24th when the Joker's birthday is actually today on the 25th? Is the joke on us?

I hope some of you realize that Joker in Grant Morrison's Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On Serious Earth was suppose to look like Madonna wearing a dress and high heels. Grant even drew the pages for it.

In the final print, McKean had a trench coat for Joker but he still wore high heels.

Point is, different interpretations. Many people defend Ultron saying "I can't throw up" saying we don't know the context of it. Same thing with the Joker photo.

I'm unaware Marvel fanboys consider TASM2 to be a Marvel film and are hurt by people insulting that POS.

I see the Sh*t storm this has created and it tells me that us, as comic book fans have trouble reading between the lines. firstly, I want to comment on what people seem to believe is a “faithful” adaptation of the fictional character known as the Joker. Sans his white face, green hair and purple , he has never been depicted in one definitive way. We have had a Noir style Joker(pre crisis, TAS, Nicholson), the actual comedian turned murdering psycho(The Killing Joke, Long Halloween), The resurrected, shakespearean Joker(The Dark Knight Return) and his younger self which was a physical roadmap of chaos with his tattoos and scars(all star batman). In recent times, we have a joker that has carved his own face off(as a joke mind you) and now sports a fade lol. I mean hell, He was dressed like Hunter S. Thompson in arguably one of his most iconic comic scenes(The Crippling of Barbara).

So please, please tell me what the definitive Joker is.

Now I would like to elaborate on Leto’s unveiling. His frame certainly is consistent with that of TDK’s and All Star Joker. But look at the Hair. I feel that if his hair was longer, it would peek through the fingers. Therefore, I believe his hair may be a nod to Scott Snyder’s recent(and enjoyable, for me at least) run of Batman. The mouth, more specifically, his teeth, make sense. In this universe the Joker is apparently the only person who has spent significant time with batman. He has had to take blows from a 6’4/6’5 – 250 pound man for possibly twenty years. This deranged, sadistic man has irked and possibly ruined Batman’s life over the past twenty years or so, especially if the rumors about a Robin being dead is true. Think about that for a moment. This Joker is wiry and athletic. And do we really need to presume that he is a criminal mastermind? if the unconfirmed leak of him having a conversation with Waller while doing standing push-ups are true, then we should know what kind of conniving psycho we are dealing with here. Everything the Joker does is for a reason – EVERYTHING.

That being said, on to the tattoos. I will offer two theories for this. The first one, as many of the other readers have theorized, this could just be an anniversary homage accomplished through some tongue in cheek photoshopping. Now for a theory that will make us think a bit more about this eventual suicide squad film and maybe the solo batman outings.

- If the Joker is the only villain to have met significant time fighting batman, then that means there were no other criminals like the Joker before hand. Batman, in how ever long his service has been for, has most likely dealt with the mob, killers in the mold of a Victor Zsas or perhaps even a deadshot. So perhaps Gotham, with it’s inexperience with people like the Joker(who is really like him mentally?) sent him to a prison first, ala Blackgate. So lets say he goes to blackgate and gets his tattoos there(Maybe from El Diablo, Maybe from Jim Parricks character if he is not death stroke, maybe just from a cast extra), then murders his tattoo artist and several officers in the violence that comes out of it, causing Blackgate to deem him insane and send him to (Hugo Strange’s?) Arkham Asylum, where he meets a Harleen Quinzel say, five or ten years before the events of Batman Vs Superman. Amanda Waller, Knowing that Batman has a symbiotic relationship of sorts with The Joker, needs him to get Batman. So she goes to Arkham , talks to Hugo Strange, then Joker himself and lets him know that the Bat is back and that he will be moved to Bella reeve(In a HANNIBAL LECTER STYLE, as Ayer and co have referenced) , where Suicide Squad supposedly takes place at. Imagine this tattooed Joker, serious faced and tattooed doing pushups while waller is talking and then she just says something like “Batman is Back” – The Joker stops his pushups, sits down indian style and in complete, campy humor(and again, Lecter style) says “My oh My, The Dark Knight Returns with a big, glorious grin.

I just think this Joker reveal shows us something about Warner Brothers' relationship with their fans. A completely random, context free image. So radical a departure that it's left to the fans to speculate what part of the image has been photoshopped for purely provocative reasons.

I know abusive codependency when I see it.

The reason I can't really dig this is because it looks like something that a Joker-cosplayer would choose to put on their body...not what the Joker himself would do. The subtlety is non-existent (though I do agree with Josh that the "damaged" tattoo is the Joker being 100% sarcastic and ironic...it's not supposed to be telling people that he's actually damaged. That's just silly), and it just gives off the vibe of trying WAY too hard.

Even if he does cover up in the rest of his appearances in the DCCU and we never see the tattoos again, using this picture as our very first exposure to the redesigned character is a pretty good indication of the mindset that Ayer (and Snyder, I'd assume) are at with Leto's Joker. We obviously still need to see the actual personality of the character and what he looks like in motion and all that...but this doesn't inspire much confidence in me, that's for sure.
