Set Construction: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES' Batcave & Thanos' Throne From THE AVENGERS

I recently came across some cool behind-the-scenes images featuring construction of Batman's Batcave for Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, and Thanos' throne, on a floating asteroid, for Joss Whedon's The Avengers. Hit the jump to check them out.

Sculptor, Brad Reyes, spent six weeks at the Sony Studios (Culver City) helping to construct the new Batcave used in Christopher Nolan's final Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.
"It combined traditional set building using stick & lathe and plaster with newer techniques using styrofoam which offers a lot of flexibility, changeability to the sets while shortening the lead time to get it built." - Brad Reyes

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

The Dark Knight Rises was directed by Christopher Nolan, from a screenplay written by Christopher and Jonathan Nolan. The cast included: Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John "Robin" Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate/Talia al Ghul.

Sculptor, Duncan Crawford, posted behind-the-scenes photos of sets that he helped create for Joss Whedon's box office hit, The Avengers. First couple, are of Thanos' throne, and the floating asteroid. The next items below, are debris from the destruction of New York City, a relief panel created for German museum scene with Loki, and a piece of the Helicarrier bridge. Lastly, the final four images show the progress of creating the rocky cliff set, which is used during Thor's first confrontation with his adopted brother, Loki.

Marvel makes cinematic history as it unites the super hero team-up of a lifetime. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Captain America (Chris Evans) assemble together for the very first time ever in this epic, action-packed blockbuster alongside Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Director Joss Whedon creates an unprecedented universe that has become a global phenomenon. Packed with spectacular visual effects, and exclusive bonus features, including Marvel's first-ever gag reel, never-before-seen Marvel short, and an interactive second screen experience, Marvel's The Avengers will blow your mind!

Cool. Hopefully in the Supes/Bats movie they give us a more comic accurate Batcave.

Yeah that means with the dinosaur and giant penny. I want everything.

I understand DC wanting to give us more realistic stuff, but I think a mixture of comic booky and realism would be the best. Like on the Young Justice show. For example, they updated the Justice League Headquarters to something more sleeker and modern.

Even the Hall of Justice got a nice revamp as the JL's fake HQ that they used to fool the public.

Also if Hawkman, Hawkwoman or Sportmaster ever come on the big screen, please use the YJ designs.

Updates that were sooooo much better than their comic designs.

^true that to the YJ designs, sportsmaster went to a level of badassery that got close to deathstroke, CLOSE to deathstroke, not the same, but still sportsmaster became a badass in that show

Lets hope none of those 3 end up in any films...
SnapperCarr - 9/17/2013, 8:23 AM
@JFogg Why not? Have you ever read or seen anything involving them?

BANE5000 - 9/17/2013, 2:14 PM
I just hope for the next Batcave for Afflecks Batman, they have more tech in it and the huge screened Batcomputer.

I was hoping the huge computer they used at the end of TDK to track down The Joker was wat would become the Batcomputer for the cave...unfortunately that didnt happen, make it happen for the next film though :]

Thanos's throne looks cool but also looks like a toilet. Weird.

Shayera hall is such a badass female DC charecter she really needs more material just look at how amazing she was in the JL animation. I'm in limbo over why the hell cyborg replaced her he basically is boring.
SnapperCarr - 9/18/2013, 5:14 PM
@SADVIPER Are you kidding me? Cyborg didn't replace her. He replaced Martian Manhunter. Hawkgirl is a shitty ass g-lister who replaced Aquaman for the sake of gender diversity. The only highlight of her entire existence as a character is the JL show.

Avengers sets look sweet! And I thought that TDKR Batcave was awesome.
