Will Christopher Nolan Kill Off Batman In THE DARK KNIGHT RISES?

In the new issue of Empire Magazine there is a great spread on The Dark Knight Rises. The article begins with a chilling quote from screenwriter David Goyer that has to make you wonder.

Shortly after the success of 2008's The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan and David Goyer sat down for lunch to discuss a third Batman film. They ran over ideas, looking for a way to top their last effort. At some point while scarfing down their meals they began to envision the final scene of the third film, that would become The Dark Knight Rises.

"The final scene of The Dark Knight Rises is exactly that scene we talked about then," says Goyer, speaking to Empire from his LA office almost four years later. "It remained completely unchanged. We both knew in our hearts that we were onto something special. I have to tell you, having finally seen everthing strung together a little while ago and seeing that scene, I got a complete lump in my throat."

With a hint like that Empire Magazine pressed Goyer a little further.

Nolan, it would seem, is committing commercial sacrilege. "Yup," agrees Goyer.
"That's why it's fucking exciting!"

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20th 2012 and stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate.

0ptimusCrime - 5/28/2012, 9:19 AM
Dont hope s0!
MTrevinos - 5/28/2012, 9:22 AM
I bet it'll end with the gay green lantern appearing lolz.

I hope he doesn't kill off Batman but it makes sense. I'm sure he doesn't want anybody destroying his batman trilogy.

The Bat Man can never die. he's more than a man . He's a symbol. Bruce Wayne on the other hand can die. He's just a man. Nolan always said that the third film will go full circle with the previous two. Having said that, i think the most important scene in the whole trilogy will be when Ra's Al Ghul is explaining this to Bruce during his training with The League Of Shadows.
marvel72 - 5/28/2012, 9:29 AM
don't care, its gonna get rebooted in a couple of years.
geokouba007 - 5/28/2012, 9:31 AM
Bruce Wayne WILL DIE. Gotham will always need a batman. maybe John Blake will replace Bruce as Bat Man .

Yeah i'm over this series because of their refusal to connect it to a wider DC universe.

I'm just waiting to see how they'll handle the next Batman when they do a World's Finest (hopefully MoS will be great and Cavill will reprise his role as Supes) and then they find a new actor for Batman and move from there.

I'll obviously see TDKR but I'm just over it.

blueberryicedcoffee may be right. maybe Bruce won't be ABLE to be Bat Man anymore because of a certain ......injury ?
thalidomide - 5/28/2012, 9:38 AM
I can't wait for the reboot :)
TempusDominus - 5/28/2012, 9:38 AM
Batman cannot be killed, Batman is a symbol, an idea and a legend. That's why Bruce Wayne took on the role, so that he'd be more than a man and he'd be everlasting, something that couldn't be erased. Even if Bruce Wayne dies, the symbol will live.
SkipsterCharm - 5/28/2012, 9:39 AM
In comics, it's called a reboot too. See: The New 52
superotherside - 5/28/2012, 9:39 AM
Who knows...
AnthonyJacobs - 5/28/2012, 9:41 AM
Maybe at the end of the movie(after credits)it will take us back between th years of th dark knight and dark knight rises and we'll bats talking to amanda waller about th justice league.
geokouba007 - 5/28/2012, 9:44 AM
AND WHAT'S SO WRONG WITH THAT ? are you sure the NEW 52 is called a "reboot" ? 'cause last i heard the last DC universe still exists. there are Multiple Earths aren't there ?
marknjoanna - 5/28/2012, 9:45 AM
i think he may kill him off.with this being the 8th batman movie the only things that havent been done is him getting killed or going to the moon.so i think he may well do it but who knows.
DukeAcureds - 5/28/2012, 9:45 AM
Yep. Or something just as sacreligious. And we'll all suck his balls for it.
I still can't get over the whole no venom thing, here.
What's next? Superman has no powers, only aids? Is that what we should be expecting here?
SmittsMcGee - 5/28/2012, 9:46 AM
I'm calling it right now, Bale gets killed and JGL becomes the new Batman.
GiantNerd - 5/28/2012, 9:46 AM

Who cares...
DoctorSnide - 5/28/2012, 9:47 AM
I just don't see me giving this film a standing ovation if Batman is killed. Will I say the film was great? Yes. But i won't leave the theater happy. Now if Batman is "killed" but Bruce lives, I will be okay with that. I just don't want him to die. We all know he's fine with sacrificing his life but I don't want to see that happen. Of course it isn't up to me.
Madmex93 - 5/28/2012, 9:48 AM
I was at pub with my friend this weekend and i mentioned to him that Nolan used A Tale of Two Cities as inspiration, and he immediately said "they're gonna kill Batman".
ThePowerCosmic - 5/28/2012, 9:49 AM
That would suck and I would hate this movie. Batman never seemed to get ahead in this trilogy. What good was all of his training if he constantly gets the crap kicked out of him and loses. TDK should have been called "The Joker", Batman and Two-face were just secondary characters.

This is trilogy is just depressing as hell. It makes Batman look so pathetic. Don't give me this Batman can't die crap! Bruce Wayne is Batman. So you would be ok with a whole other trilogy with someone other than Bruce Wayne as Batman...yeah right! The history of the character would be defaced! In the comic Bruce Wayne was so smart and Polished that he could overcome any adversary. This Batman with all his training and tech is still so weak.

These movies are all about shock value. I started out loving this franchise, now I am just mad at it.
NeoBaggins - 5/28/2012, 9:49 AM
Nolan can say he's made the best film since the inception of film, claim to have earned the right to bring Batman into day time and he can restrict as many fantasy elements as he wants. But his pants have gotten too big when it comes to killing off Batman. That's where my inner fanboy draws the line. He's made his own Gotham universe and it's own rules and continuity, but no artist owns the right to kill Batman. That happens, one viewing, and I'm done.

Can't see this happening with a RISES theme attached to the film and the fact that it is so anti-climactic and an instant crowd turn-off. Who leaves the theater juiced about a film where Batman dies at the end?

edge9000x - 5/28/2012, 9:49 AM
he's going to kill alfred not bruce.
Tajin88 - 5/28/2012, 9:49 AM
Killing batman off is sooo easy to end it, and if Nolan would go for that, then he would do it, but its not his style I think.
ThunderCougarFalconBird - 5/28/2012, 9:50 AM
I don't think he'll be killed off, I think Batmans identity will be relvealed in the end.
DividedIStand80 - 5/28/2012, 9:51 AM
Kill off the whole Nolan Universe and start over
silverdog - 5/28/2012, 9:51 AM
sure why not... kill everybody.
Chewtoy - 5/28/2012, 9:51 AM
I don't see Batman getting broken, coming back, and then getting killed. That's just silly.
Jobu - 5/28/2012, 9:51 AM
@Geo007 - I've always thought that he gave the ending away with that quote.
NeoBaggins - 5/28/2012, 9:52 AM
It's not his call even on an artistic level to touch Batman, Alfred or Gordon. He's no longer weaving his version of the material, but altering items meant to be left in place and intact.
SpiderJerusalem - 5/28/2012, 9:53 AM
Even if they do a year later it will be revealed he was just lost in time playing pirate
Matador - 5/28/2012, 9:54 AM
I'll wait for the reviews and the spoilers before I see this tool's movie.
SentinelofLiberty - 5/28/2012, 9:57 AM
PowerCosmic and Neo, I agree with the both of you. First of all, Batman belongs to all of us. If Nolan decides to kill the character just to show how edgy he is, that is a disservice to all of the fans who hold the character so dear.

Secondly, this crap about some GCPD beat cop becoming the new Batman...has anyone suggesting that even READ a Batman comic? The whole point is that Batman is a lifelong obsession. It takes someone like Bruce -- with a single-minded, lifelong devotion -- to actually become the Batman. Training, dedication, all of it. Even those who have 'replaced' him (most notably Dick Grayson) have been training for it most of their lives. Others have tried to replace him, but crumbled under the weight of what it requires. If they have some beat cop just decide, "Well, I think I'll become the new Batman today," that is also a disservice to the character.
thalidomide - 5/28/2012, 9:57 AM

Chill dude :)
blackula - 5/28/2012, 9:58 AM
How do we know the Lazarus pit doesn't come into play. There is a younger version of R.A.G and the pit is said to give him eternal life and keep him young.

I agree about the reboot thing. So all you comic book fans have only read one version of Batman? I think not! What if the next installment of the a Bats movie will tie into a Justice league universe, maybe it will be the telling of Batman and Robin, or maybe it will be a Batman and Robin through Robins perspective. The beauty about the amount of CBM's that are coming out is that there are many different ways to tell a story.
