THE DARK KNIGHT RISES: Christopher Nolan Releases A Statement About The Tragedy In Colorado

Earlier today, it was reported that 24-year-old gunman James Holmes walked into a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises (clad in body armour and a gas mask) in Aurora, Colorado and opened fire on those in attendance. While there have been conflicting reports as to exactly how this all went down, we do know that 12 people have lost their lives and 59 are injured (some critically). The tragic events led Warner Bros. to consider removing the film from North American theatres this weekend - something they later decided against - with newtworks taking all adverts for the film off TV and radio. Christopher Nolan, the director of the film, has now issued the following statement and a full report on the incident can be read by clicking HERE.

Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of "The Dark Knight Rises", I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community. I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ "The Dark Knight Rises" is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The screenplay is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster "The Dark Knight." The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.

STARRING:

Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman
Michael Caine as Alfred
Gary Oldman as Commissioner Jim Gordon
Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox
Tom Hardy as Bane
Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman
Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake
Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate
Josh Pence as Ra's Al Ghul

RELEASE DATE: July 20th, 2012

ThePowerCosmic - 7/20/2012, 4:17 PM
First Ledger and now this. Is this franchise cursed? Such a tragedy.
thedudeabides - 7/20/2012, 4:17 PM
Worst day in the history of cinema.
ComradeGrey - 7/20/2012, 4:19 PM
What else can you really say?

A disturbed man made a violent gesture that had nothing to do with the movie.

It was about his own sickness, and unfortunately he chose to drag other people into his personal hell.

Edmundo - 7/20/2012, 4:21 PM
Nice gesture by Nolan.
Cerebro - 7/20/2012, 4:23 PM
What a sad day.

This is a tragedy. This kid is off his rocker,he's smart and everything and he uses it to ruin the lives of countless people, there is a big difference between fantasy and reality and this kid crossed the line. I feel awful about this but its not gonna stop me from seeing the movie. Im a fan of batman, not the rogues gallery
95 - 7/20/2012, 4:49 PM
Well said. It's frightening frankly, that someone would attack such a vulnerable place.
BuckyCap - 7/20/2012, 4:51 PM
"His hair was dyed red... Like the Joker."

That is the statement I keep hearing on the news. It makes my stomach churn that they would focus on such a trivial detail, and then also get it wrong. If you are going to sensationalize everything the psychopath did, at least try to sound like you aren't complete buffoons.
ThunderKat - 7/20/2012, 4:55 PM
That is a terrific statement. The media needs to stop making the ancillary connections to this movie. This could have been any blockbuster movie's opening night.

That's all, not here to debate.
OhGawDuhhh - 7/20/2012, 4:56 PM
Classy, considerate and thoughtful.

Well said Mr. Nolan.

Tony93 - 7/20/2012, 4:56 PM
Damn it.

one of the reports said today that when police caught him, his hair was painted red and he told the police he was "The Joker". what gets me is all these people saying concealed carry could have prevented this... I call Bullshit.
marvel72 - 7/20/2012, 4:57 PM

R.I.P COLORADO BATMAN FANS

CapFanLex005 - 7/20/2012, 4:58 PM
I think the media coverage of this is ridiculousness...yeah it is a tragedy, yeah it was random, yeah it dose not make since; but having all of the 24hr news networks covering nothing else is sad. What about all the people in Syria???
CapFanLex005 - 7/20/2012, 4:59 PM
oh and TDKR WAS BOSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!
batfan175 - 7/20/2012, 5:05 PM
Well said, mr. Nolan. It's so sad this happened. This day should have been a day of joy and art but one attention seeking maniac chose to attack innocent people. R.I.P. to all of the victims.
TheDickRises - 7/20/2012, 5:05 PM
@ThePowerCosmic
curse?? thats bullshits, its purely tragedy
OdinsBeard - 7/20/2012, 5:08 PM
all class.
OhGawDuhhh - 7/20/2012, 5:09 PM
How morbidly ironic that this fatal assault happened during a screening of 'The Dark Knight Rises', a film in which the 2 protagonists have a continuous deliberation regarding firearms and crime.

Of course, sensationalized Media indulges the ignorant and simple-minded members of our society, and the entire tragedy is completely overshadowed by bullshit.
justified1 - 7/20/2012, 5:12 PM
Sensless? Hell yes.

Is this franchise cursed?

I don't remember anything bad happening during Batman Begins. Am i wrong?
Tainted87 - 7/20/2012, 5:13 PM
My prayers go out to the victims and the families of the victims of this stupid tragedy.
DragonofDarknessXIII - 7/20/2012, 5:17 PM
Thank you Mr. Nolan for bringing Batman back from the dead.

R.I.P. to the people in Colorado.
GUNSMITH - 7/20/2012, 5:17 PM
IT'S NOT A CURSED MOVIE, PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE. GOOD BAD AND A PERCENT OF THEM ARE JUST THE WRONG KIND OF PEOPLE..BAD THINGS HAPPEN ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE AND SOME HORRIBLE THINGS HAPPEN OR ARE HAPPENING RIGHT NOW THAT WE DON'T EVEN KNOW..PRAY FOR THE SUFFERING, IT'S ALL ANYONE CAN DO AFTER A TRAGEDY.
BenderDickCumPatch - 7/20/2012, 5:24 PM
Bravo Nolan I respect you.
Jollem - 7/20/2012, 5:28 PM
my shitty little theater in my small town is almost like a second home to me, and for the first time today i don't know what i was feeling before seeing the movie, but i know i didn't like it. i can't imagine...

hopefully people will pull through for one another
kevberg - 7/20/2012, 5:29 PM
BizzaroNumber1--its not politically driven STFU with noise.
kliffmiester - 7/20/2012, 5:30 PM
hang on just a minute if he wanted to be the joker wouldnt he have used a knife.. he is a gutless cowrd who should have chewed in the end of one of them rifles instead of ruining the lives of innocent people
angus666 - 7/20/2012, 5:31 PM
@Intruder Indeed.
kevberg - 7/20/2012, 5:35 PM
@BizzarroNumber1-
You have no proof and you make this political, You're a prick plain and simple.

He called himself the Joker, so, I guess we should blame the comics and Nolan?

NO of course not. Hes a psycho.

ABC's libertard , Brian Ross tried to link him top the tea party and it was false. ABC had to RETRACT and apologize.
Tony93 - 7/20/2012, 5:40 PM
feel like I must do something about it..
kevberg - 7/20/2012, 5:41 PM
@Bizzarosnumber1
Play what games you'd like , saying its politically driven is bullsh#t and you have nothing to prove otherwise.
You're just another dumbass trying to start crap during a tragedy.
Most people here have the right attitude and place the blame where it belongs, at the psycho.
uvsk420 - 7/20/2012, 5:43 PM
i used to live in aurora that century 16 is the theatre i always went this, new suck, my prayers go out to the families of the victims
ScorseseFan - 7/20/2012, 5:47 PM
@Bizzarosnumber1
In line with the other comments above, it's not meant to be some sort of religious promotion you dumb shit. It was meant more as a figure of speech. It's funny how in spite of everything that's happened today, people like you still obsess over the trivial.
TheRealEnrico - 7/20/2012, 5:48 PM
Concealed carry could have prevented the scale of this.

If people were able to fight back it would have been much different.

Think if they only had two maybe three or more people who were strapped maybe somebodies son could be still alive.

Concealed carriers have stopped mass shootings before.

First responders can never be as good as a immediate responder.
BooYah - 7/20/2012, 5:48 PM
We can only pray that this man didn't start something and that there won't be any copycats. Remember the innocent people that died were just like us CBM fans.

R.I.P
thingrock4 - 7/20/2012, 5:48 PM
If this was adifferent world and i could have this man i would make him pay in ways that are not of this earth.I pray for the families of the victims and weep for those lost-this should never happen again.
Darkhaven - 7/20/2012, 5:54 PM
[frick]ing awful man, people should be out there having fun with this movie right now. Absolute tragedy. I hope the victims all rest well, and I hope their families all the best.
CaptainBane2012 - 7/20/2012, 5:55 PM
Well said Mr Nolan.People visit the cinema for enjoyment and escapism, truly horrifying that someone would use an event like this and carry out this massacre.God rest their souls.
TheRealEnrico - 7/20/2012, 5:56 PM
@BeeKool Agreed. @@Bizzarosnumber1 What a baseless claim. There is no evidence pointing that at all as of yet.

You are the one politicizing this. Then you proclaim that you're as "true"?

Get your head out of your ass. Unless you were in on it you do not know.
OhGawDuhhh - 7/20/2012, 6:07 PM
Sometimes I wish this site had a Facebook comment system so I could see the real faces of the folks who post stuff on here.

Also, a 'thumbs up' and 'thumbs down' option would be pretty awesome.
somesuperguy - 7/20/2012, 6:09 PM
First off R.I.P to all those who died in this tragedy and a speedy recovery to all those injured, physically and emotionally.

@TheRealEnrico AND BizzaroNumber1-

I don't want to start an argument but I have to completely disagree with that. It's easier to say that "If you I was there" or "If someone with a C & C was there" then the situation would have been better, but unless you are trained to use a gun in those conditions and take someones life, it's just not going to happen. Everyone has a survival instinct and when a group of people are running in panic around you, you're just going to do more damage then good. Especially when tear gas is in the mix, even if someone was trained to take a life in a situation like that they wouldn't be able to make that shot.
kevberg - 7/20/2012, 6:09 PM
@bizzarronumber1
Its not political . People are willing to ignore all the political crap and look at this guy as a psycho.
I agree too that Concealed carry is a deterrent, But political...not today , it shouldn't be and most people here aren't.

Trust me, If it becomes something to use for a Obama agenda, I'll be on your side.

EagleEye21 - 7/20/2012, 6:10 PM
When I heard about the shootin' in Colorado I was dumbfounded as to what possessed this sick man to do such a horrid thing, and to destroy the lives of so many people in just one night when this was supposed to be a night of enjoyment. And I remembered what Alfred said, " Some men aren't' looking for anything logical. Some men just want to watch the world burn" But with that said, I must also quote Harvey Dent as he said to the people of Gotham who were frightened of man who was just as wicked these words, "The Night is Darkest just before the Dawn, and I promise you the Dawn is Coming." That is all I have to say. Thank you.
R888 - 7/20/2012, 6:15 PM
well said Nolan
Fogs - 7/20/2012, 6:19 PM
I'm too sad for what happened, really. The more I think of it, the worse. May those people be at peace. And i'm sorry for this guy. He's doomed.
cantfakethefunkdj - 7/20/2012, 6:22 PM
today was supposed to be an exciting day for us fans but it just started in sorrow
One2ephu - 7/20/2012, 6:22 PM
What a brutal tragedy. This guy probably has some kinda undiagnosed form of paranoid schyzophrenia. Which seems a common factor in most murders/mass murders. He likely chose the midnight screening due to access to a large number of people. I think people trying to sensationalise/blame or tie this to the batman franchise are deluded and not seeing that it is the fault of one very sick man. I feel sorry for all the victims, families and even those involved with the hard work and dedication making the dark knight rises which is now tainted by a madman.
CorndogBurglar - 7/20/2012, 6:24 PM
You know, a lot of people are making the comment in the news and radio that this guy might be some crazed fanboy based on him dying his hair red and calling himself the joker. No one has looked at the obvious though.

The Joker has GREEN hair, not red. A crazed fanboy would know the difference. This guy was just a troubled little shit. He should be tied up in the middle of Aurora CO and the people of that town should be allowed to stone him to death. He wants to act like a heathen? He can die like a heathen.
CorndogBurglar - 7/20/2012, 6:27 PM
@ bizarro

Not saying this to be rude or insulting and I honestly mean no disrespect even though it will come off that way, but I suppose you think 9/11 was a government conspiracy too, right?
