IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that The Dark Knight Rises generated strong second weekend global box office results of approximately $15 million in 479 IMAX theatres worldwide over the weekend of July 29, bringing the film’s global IMAX cumulative box office to date to approximately $52 million.

Domestically, the film grossed an estimated $62 million, of which approximately $9 million was generated in 332 IMAX theatres. Internationally, the film earned approximately $6.4 million in 147 IMAX theatres, bringing IMAX’s international total to $14.2 million.

"We’ve crossed the $50 million mark in the fastest time ever with The Dark Knight Rises, lifted, in part, by exceptional international box office," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "Audiences are clearly seeking out and embracing the film the way it was meant to be seen – in IMAX. We are pleased by the second-weekend results and believe the film will continue to have the legs we anticipated."

"This was an outstanding second weekend," said Greg Foster, IMAX Chairman and President of Filmed Entertainment. "We are extremely gratified Warner Brothers and Christopher Nolan chose to partner with us again and are equally pleased fans around the world are recognizing IMAX is the optimal way to experience the epic final film of the Dark Knight trilogy."

While making the 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan was the first filmmaker to use IMAX cameras in a major motion picture release. Nolan employed the extremely high-resolution cameras even more extensively on The Dark Knight Rises: The IMAX Experience – including the film’s prologue — incorporating a record of more than an hour of footage filmed with IMAX cameras. These specific sequences, which will expand to fill the entire screen exclusively in IMAX, will deliver unprecedented crispness and clarity and a truly immersive experience for moviegoers.

Sequences filmed in 35mm have been digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ "The Dark Knight Rises" is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The screenplay is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster "The Dark Knight." The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.

This movie sucked cos Batman had a limp and a beard.
Jollem - 7/30/2012, 3:41 PM
would a fourth movie be a fourquel or a quadquel :p

great trilogy
Knightrider - 7/30/2012, 3:41 PM
Was a great film, and hopefully news like this is why it is remembered and not the tragedy, which sadly will always be associated with this film.
Jollem - 7/30/2012, 3:42 PM
no, it sucked 'cause it wan't done through marvel studios :)
Durf - 7/30/2012, 3:44 PM
It was a good movie, but I still like Begins and TDK better
DragonofDarknessXIII - 7/30/2012, 3:44 PM
@Marvelite I guess Avengers $207 million opening don't mean shit either?
Charlie2094 - 7/30/2012, 3:44 PM
Like I posted in another comment, when Spiderman and Batman finish their runs, the highest grossing films of 2012 should look like this;

1 - Avengers ($1.5B (when finished)
2 - Dark Knight Rises ($1 B (when finished)
3 - Amazing Spiderman $700m (when finished)

How amazing would that be? Shows how cbm's are far from dead. Throw in the Hobbit around their, everyone wins! No need for all this, Marvelite, Nolanite crap, we are all winning!

Saintspidey-

What the [frick] is up with that Eddard Stark small hand in that picture?

Really freaking me out.
Knightrider - 7/30/2012, 3:47 PM
@Marvelite I agree box office results don't matter in terms of a movies quality, just look what is at number 1 for proof of that, but we all like to see the movies we will do well, it was the same with Avengers, I enjoyed hearing it was doing.

I guess box office does play some aspect though, as not really an issue with TDKR as is last one, but say Avengers tanked then there just wouldn't be a sequel despite how good or bad the film is. So in that regard they do matter, just don't show quality.

That said loved TDKR and Avengers so for me good year all round
TheGothamKnight1939 - 7/30/2012, 3:47 PM
@Charlie

I agree 100%.
Durf - 7/30/2012, 3:47 PM
nice @Charlie, well said man
Charlie2094 - 7/30/2012, 3:48 PM
^ Agreed, why can't more people see this? Same with Begins I think, speaks how great the trilogy is when any of the three can be a favourite, usually there'd be at least one (Spiderman 3, X:men 3 etc) that is a clearly not a popular favourite.
Durf - 7/30/2012, 3:48 PM
Also, I agree with @IM53
DragonofDarknessXIII - 7/30/2012, 3:50 PM
@TheMarvelite No you said it yourslf: "Records don't mean anything..." Your argument is invalid

RorMachine - 7/30/2012, 3:51 PM
Batman NEVER had a limp and a beard in the comics. Plus Batman was only in it for like, a minute..who the Hell was this Bruce Wayne guy the movie focused on?
SageMode - 7/30/2012, 3:52 PM
Ok...................

@Marvelite

So this doesn't matter...but the Avengers box office does? Hypocritical.

Also, Avatar featured a plot ripped from Dancing with Wolves, Pocahontas, The Last of the Mohicans, An Inconvenient Truth, Native American History and Ferngully. It had bad acting (notably Sam Worthington). The only upside was that people liked the CGI (I personally hated it, could always tell it was a computer, it never felt real).
HelaGood - 7/30/2012, 3:55 PM
bat crotch shot
Jollem - 7/30/2012, 3:55 PM
in my mind i'm going to accredit 1/4 of the avengers money success to those scarjo nakey pics :)
SHHH - 7/30/2012, 3:55 PM
It Had An Actual Story... To It
HelaGood - 7/30/2012, 3:56 PM

HelaGood - 7/30/2012, 3:59 PM
and so it continues...

DragonofDarknessXIII - 7/30/2012, 3:59 PM
Yeah because you are a hypocrite
rocky - 7/30/2012, 3:59 PM
Can we all now hold hands and skip along happily ever after? I mean TDKR is a bonafide beast even if it doesn't catch Avengers

Marvelite, Nolanite, DClite, Avatarlite, Batmanlites, Peter Jacksonlites (btw I'm all of the above except Nolanite but like most of his films anyway) we all should be happy. It bodes well for the genres of CBM, sci/fi and fantasy and in the end we all win.

FilmsFan - 7/30/2012, 4:05 PM
Can anyone tell how much other films like AVATAR & AVENGERS did in IMAX in total?!?

This film certainly deserves all BO sucess!
But Shooting has serious effect! Mainly in US!
& now maybe OLYMPICS too will give competition!

But I LOOOOVED IT!
As I'm sure most people do!
Never mind hater!
TheGothamKnight1939 - 7/30/2012, 4:06 PM
@Marvelite

I've seen better 3D at Disneyland.
RorMachine - 7/30/2012, 4:06 PM
And there was that other bit..when Batman goes "Arggg" when he's fighting bane. I've been reading Batman comics for 20 years and I never once heard his go "Arrggg" like that. He went "Erraaghhh" once, but not "Arrgg". So the entire movie sucks because of that, what I just said there. I'm right.
