THE DARK KNIGHT RISES And THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN To Open On The Same Date In China

It's finally official... Warner Brothers' The Dark Knight Rises and Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man will open on the same day in China, and one week later, Fox's Prometheus will hit theatres as well. More after the jump.

I'm not sure how to describe all this, other than it's a big mess right now with Hollywood films in China. For months, Warner Bros. waited to hear from China Film Group Corporation regarding the release of the Christopher Nolan-directed final Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises. First, they said that the film won't be released, then that it might and so on. Then, it was revealed that China Film Group is planning to release two big superhero films on the same date, one being TDKR and the other one is The Amazing Spider-Man. Warner Brothers was not happy with this decision, so they tried to get a September release. Now, thanks to LA Times, it seems that it's finally official: The Dark Knight Rises will open on the same day as Marc Webb & Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man. The release date for both films is August 27th.

But, there is more. According to the report, Ridley Scott's science fiction film Prometheus will open only one week later, on September 3rd. This is definitely not a good news for these three Hollywood blockbusters, but that was the point. China wants to limit American films, as far as box office goes. It's safe to say that none of the films mentioned above will have great legs, but it's still hard to say how much will they gross in China, the biggest international market. Also, word is that both Total Recall and The Bourne Legacy will go against each other on September 14th.

The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man and Prometheus all did well at the worldwide box office, but this will definitely not help their international grosses.

I call Batman to win this week.
AmericanPsychoWolf - 8/14/2012, 6:27 PM
The Amazing Spider-Man let me down, its not Marc Webb's fault.....Its the morons at Sony and the editing department that made those idiotic changes to the final cut!
deadpool123 - 8/14/2012, 6:28 PM
ooooh china
TheSkywalkingKnight - 8/14/2012, 6:28 PM
TASM will beat TDKR! China are crazy for 3D films at the moment.
nowtheresaBATman - 8/14/2012, 6:28 PM
That'd be one helluva night at the movies!
CBMM1 - 8/14/2012, 6:29 PM
Um this was already reported today..
SageMode - 8/14/2012, 6:29 PM
This is hilarious
Bodwulf - 8/14/2012, 6:29 PM
TDKR was a good solid film. TASM wih Rain-man cum Spider-man, not so much.
iJackSparrow - 8/14/2012, 6:37 PM
TDKR is a finale and Nolan's TDK is one of the biggest bootlegged films in China history. The better film in my opinion is The Amazing Spider-Man, and China does love 3D, but I think TDKR will get the edge here.

The fact that a Spider-Man REBOOT will end up making not many different at the box office than a Batman acclaimed FINALE speaks more about how impressive The Amazing Spider-Man's run at the box office has been. Here is a reboot that faced flame wars and the "crime" of opening before TDKR, and it's still becoming the most successful reboot of all time. I can't wait for the sequels, and I hope they lock Marc Webb to do it. Much that I love about this film comes from his sensibilities as a director able to get the best out of his cast.
CPBuff22 - 8/14/2012, 6:39 PM
This was posted a few hours ago and has been sitting in the news section.
iJackSparrow - 8/14/2012, 6:40 PM
And I'm talking about overseas of course. Domestic, TASM is behaving like a successful reboot, but overseas is a [frick]ing monster. Not a single reboot has done what TASM has done before. Let's hope that Man of Steel and Batman's reboot are capable to match that, quality wise and box office wise.
TheAmazingAvenger - 8/14/2012, 6:40 PM
TASM will beat TDKR at the Chinese box office, no doubt. After all, Spider-Man IS the most popular superhero here in Asia. And did you guys forget that TDK wasn't released in China?
SuspenseSmith - 8/14/2012, 6:42 PM

GoILL - 8/14/2012, 6:42 PM
Surprised the comment section isn't over run with the same dumb shit as usual.
SuspenseSmith - 8/14/2012, 6:42 PM
So they'll be pirated the same day, essentially.
SuspenseSmith - 8/14/2012, 6:44 PM
I say we start a coup in China, give the country back to the people.
VIVA LA RESISTTANCE!!!

Seriously though, they've all probably seen it already there. Do they censor films there? Probably won't cut down TDKR because it makes the US military look bad.
SuspenseSmith - 8/14/2012, 6:49 PM
@ThatWolfMan

Spot on, brotha. It was all Sony's fault. Marc Webb probably did the best he could with the shit script he got and that [frick]ing Avi Arad breathing down his neck.

I wish Marvel could get back the rights but keep the cast and director. Sony keeps [frick]ing it up.

I liked the movie for the most part but what it DID get wrong were problems that the Raimi films had wrong. I hold less of a grudge against Raimi and Tobey for the shitfest that was Spider-Man 3. It was probably Sony execs that dropped the ball on that one.
ninjaturtle11 - 8/14/2012, 6:56 PM
tasm was a better movie in my opinon. it mademy eyes water.
WinterSoldier24 - 8/14/2012, 6:56 PM
In my opinion, I find it hard to believe that the Chinese really care about how many awards a movie gets in the US. I think it's all about what's trendy, for them.

TDKR was a good movie, but for me, it wasn't as good as Begins. TASM really washes out the bad taste left in people's mouths after how bad Spidet-Man 3 was. Just because it's a reboot doesn't take anything away from the story. Nolan's Batman is, after all, a reboot in its own right.

I'm not biased at all, when it comes to movies. I just want to enjoy the movie. But, in my opinion, I believe TASM will edge out TDKR, but not by much. At least, I don't think it will.

@Teabag - Bring me my boobs, mate. Cheers!
silverdog - 8/14/2012, 7:02 PM
both were dissapointing.. so, whatever.
StormLoganSummers - 8/14/2012, 7:02 PM
Things are a little too peaceful here. I don't like it.
WOTAN - 8/14/2012, 7:04 PM
I still haven't seen tdkr yet but the new spiderman movies was surprisingly good i hope it does well in china.
AmericanPsychoWolf - 8/14/2012, 7:07 PM
@SuspenseSmith I know man, the trailers got me excited for the movie when TDKR was slacking in promotion.

I went into the theater with high expectations (Like Avengers and Batman) and sad to say, it let me down.

But your right, Sony messed up Sm3 and almost messed up this one (If they didn't cut the scenes alot of people would like this movie though)
TheAbomination - 8/14/2012, 7:18 PM
Words cannot describe how much I don't care.
ninjaturtle11 - 8/14/2012, 7:21 PM
im about to start a fAnboy war. the following statemens are not the way i feel but the THE LAST 3 PARTS ARE TRUE . ..... BATMAN WAS A [frick]ING BAD MOVIE BAD ACTORS BAD SCRIPT AND THE MOST FLAWS I EVER SEEN. MOST PEOPLE I MY THEATER WALKED OUT OF THE MOVIE 0R FEEL TO SLEEP
FilmsFan - 8/14/2012, 7:23 PM
I dont get it when FANS try to explain that TASM is a Blockbuster!
NO, IT'S NOT!

255 Million domestic & 400+ foreign & Worldwide Total of about 700!!
Is it Successful ... YES!
NOT BLOCKBUSTER... & kinda not sooo Successful for a SPIDERMAN film!!

People do give examples of BATMAN BEGINS etc!
Well in US it's still behind... Cuz BB adjusted was 255! & TASM did it now & in 3D!

Plus SPIDERMAN isn't BATMAN!!
SpiderMan is a comercial King of SuperHeros!
Even the worst of the worst film u can make; SpiderMan film will never fail at BoxOffice!
Kids & Teens will see it as SPIDEY is SWINGING! They don't give a shit about Story... For them ICE AGE is as good as TOY STORY!
Where difference is; it's the number of Adults liking these films!
& I guess SONY isn't interested in doing that!!

& then look at first 3 SPIDERMAN film!
Reboot rule doesn't apply to SpiderMan as its a different kind of a property!
If anyone with his mind working thinks that TDKR is as kids friendly as AVENGERS or TASM then ur an idiot! Its NOT even teen friendly! It's LONG & DARK DARK FILM!
Great Film but it's not so easy to work with Kids & teens stuff!

Hence don't tell me that TASM has done amazingly as a "reboot"... Cuz I can bet a Million$ here that going by SONY attitude; they'll NEVER be interested in making a great spiderman film; they just want to suck all the blood out of it by making a SpiderMan film every 2-3 years!
They'll ALL earn their money back BUT; NO film will ever be on the level of even BATMAN BEGINS or IRON MAN! Let alone Avengers or TDK or TDKR!!
By chance if Writer & Director stuck luck they'll make another SPIDERMAN-2 but that all!

Sony isn't out to make a Good SpiderMan film; they just want to earn money!
& going by the BoxOffice decline of this one even though it's ALL NEW SPIDEY shit & with full force 3D & absolutely WRONG & MISLEADING MARKETING of TASM ... It's still behind all previous 3!
& it's not even catching them internationally... where market is grown out of proportion in last 2-3 years!!
I've got ZERO hopes for TASM-2... To Be GOOD!!
TrueRedBlue - 8/14/2012, 7:28 PM
Amazing Spider-Man will make more, but that honestly doesn't matter. They were both, along with Avengers, fantastic films. This was one hell of a memorable Summer! So let's not make a bad thing out of a good situation, okay?
YOUNGBL00D - 8/14/2012, 7:28 PM
That's an awesome pic of spidey
TrueRedBlue - 8/14/2012, 7:33 PM
@FilmsFan
Why are you so focused on what Sony's priorities are? The main point is that 'The Amazing Spider-Man' was a great film and an even better, more in-depth look at the origin story. All this comparing isn't necessary. Reboots are almost NEVER successful, so TASM getting 700mil is a great thing, considering 2002 Spider-Man made 800mil.
All in all, it was a good film. Leave it at that, Jesus....
Ichaos - 8/14/2012, 7:35 PM
Hmmm I See nothing wrong with an old school double feature :)
WinterSoldier24 - 8/14/2012, 7:38 PM
@TrueRedBlue - Couldn't agree with you more, bro. This summer was amazing as far as CBM's go. The heat just ruined it. But whatever, it was cool in the theatre. Great year
JohnTom88 - 8/14/2012, 7:40 PM

Best Scenario:

TDKR wins, TASM fails, Spidey back to Marvel, TASM 2 made
by Disney, Marvel utter domination.
Emanuel14 - 8/14/2012, 7:41 PM
@FilmsFan You know what your comment is?...a waste of time and letters, and you and your opinion are a waste of sperm
Webhead007 - 8/14/2012, 7:43 PM
TASM will do better asia loves spidey
Webhead007 - 8/14/2012, 7:44 PM
@Emanuel14 agree
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 8/14/2012, 7:45 PM
Wish I cared. Actually I don't
CPBuff22 - 8/14/2012, 7:57 PM
@kaaaldrogo if you follow this link http://www.comicbookmovie.com/news/?a=65717 to the article posted about two hours before this you will see that WB actually was lobbying to get TDKR pushed back to a September release to avoid going head to head with Amazing Spider-Man. They were shot down however. The original post goes on to tell how this has become common practice in China as an attempt to kill box office takes for foreign films.
Ichaos - 8/14/2012, 7:58 PM
@FilmsFan Actually the origin story in the Amazing Spiderman is glossed over if you ask me.

The origin story is Boy gets bitten by radioactive spider, boy gains spider powers. Boy goes to exploit said powers and make money off them.Boy lets wrestling promo runner get robbed. he Robber he lets go kills his Uncle. Peter learns the life lesson the hard way that with great power comes great responsibilty forming the core and backbone of the character.

The Amazing Spiderman Movie Origin: Peters parent leave him with his Aunt and Uncle for unknown reasons. Peter is still a boo hoo girl over it 10 year later. Peter is bitten by genetically engineered spider and gains powers. Peter does not exploit his powers and never fully learns the great power lesson. Uncle gets killed and seeks revenge.
Minotauro - 8/14/2012, 7:59 PM
TDKR #18 Top 250
TASM 7.6

TDKR 87%
TASM 73%

TDKR isn't losing to anything TASM related. Not going to post B.O. because that's irrelevant.
Maximus101 - 8/14/2012, 8:03 PM
Who cares which makes more money in china lol we all know which will end on top between the two for overall box office. The amazing spider man was a lot better than the original three but TDKR is definetly better than TASM.
TheBigBoss917 - 8/14/2012, 8:04 PM
@ The Marvelite

@theInvincibleMexiMan

LOL

But seriously, I really didn't like TASM. What a let down, so many problems with it
Durf - 8/14/2012, 8:18 PM
My guess would be that TASM wins the weekend because of Spidey's popularity there. TDKR is of course going to make more money worldwide overall though.

@FilmsFan: Please tell me how a film that makes 255 million domestic and 700 million worldwide isn't a blockbuster? And it's not done domestically or internationally, so please explain...
AutobotCommander84 - 8/14/2012, 8:59 PM
3D films are big in China at the moment, and Spider-Man is a much more popular character worldwide than Batman.
Brady1138 - 8/14/2012, 9:52 PM
1. The Dark Knight Rises
2. The Amazing Spider-Man
3. Prometheus

All three were awesome, but, good grief, why does it take so long for some foreign releases?!
TrueRedBlue - 8/14/2012, 10:18 PM
It's a bad time to live in China.. You get the mispleasure of seeing these 2 glorious movies WAYY too late.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 8/14/2012, 10:34 PM
Spider-man will in. The Chinese [frick]ing love Spider-man.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 8/14/2012, 10:36 PM
So do the Japanese.

Let's face it. Asians love Spider-man.
BenderDickCumPatch - 8/14/2012, 10:45 PM
I feel sorry for TDKr because TASM will shit all over it in the Chinese market.
